Default German Steelbooks

Just looking for information/clarification on German steelbooks. I have pretty much avoided them because from what I've noticed, they tend to not include a J-Card but rather have the information printed directly on the back of the steelbook, is this always the case? Or has this practice been stopped with newer releases? I can only recall maybe one steelbook that appeared to have just artwork on the back but I don't pretend to have seen every single German steelbook out there.

I just can't bring myself to buy one of those steelbooks if that information is on there, I think it really does it a disservice.

Anyhow, I'll appreciate any responses I receive. Thanks in advance.

I have 3 or 4 German steels and none of them have printed j-card info on the back.

Default The Batman Films

Do they make Batman Forever steelbook in the US? I have Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight Rises all in steelbooks. I know they have The Dark Knight as well, just haven't gotten that one yet, will shortly. I thought that I would collect all the Batman movies in steelbook if I'm able to.

Haven't seen a US version of Forever or Batman and Robin in steelbook anywhere. Probably can find a UK steel of these on Amazon.

The UK Steelbooks for the Schumacher films are lovely, but I can't for the life of me comprehend why they chose not to put the symbol on the front of Forever. It sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the other three films. I wonder if there was some sort of contractual obligation that meant Warners had to put Val Kilmer on the front cover? That's the only explanation I can think of.

Default Steelbook Longevity ???

Hi I`m about 5 years in to Blu Rays and video projection, from cine films would you believe.

Just recently I picked up my 4th and 5th Steelbooks quite cheaply,Hobbit and The Omen ( the proper one ), and suddenly I semed to hit the go button on collecting them.

They are super compulsive, but as some are getting quite expensiove it got me wondering about longevity, and corrosion etc.

I read that about 3 odd years ago people started noticing Rust spots and corrosion area`s appearing and paint/ink flaking on some steel books and that Scanavo the Steelbook makers had been contacted and seemed to be aware of it. Scanavo had apparently said they expect more rust round where the plastic and steel meets or the steel is bent and shaped. I suppose as a very thin tin coating on the metal.

Even new sealed some seem to come with flecks off on the edges etc of the colour surface probably due to when being assembled.

I wondered does anyone know if they addressed the issue, and upped qaulity etc at all at that point.

I know they are quite easy to scratch, and it seems there is a 2% tinplate coating on the base ferrous metal of the steelbook, but that doesn`t sound much to me. Be better if it was 5% or similar and would not add much cost over all to up it. Pennies only, and well worth it.

Its a shame they are not golden Anodised like the goldey possi-drive screws you can buy etc as they seems very durable.

But although blu ray may be superceded by other higher format discs, for collecting it looks as if the same size discs are here to stay so you could always update your newer version HD disc in to your collectable B,Ray Steelbook.

I`m not sure, but as the paint coating is actually ink and not paint so its probably porous we are relying on a meagre 2% of tinplate to keep these in good order long term.

Has anyone got any info on the current qaulity of steelbooks, have there been any improvements especially as steelbook.com/ Scanavo are aware of issues mentioned, or anyone got any rusting etc.

I`m reluctant to keep mine in clear poly wrap types etc as it often causes moisture to build up inside it, so maybe cotton sleeves etc are better.

I think the recently trying for the market futurepaks have a little thicker tin, and a good qaulity over lacquer so they take less damage being handled, but I wish any of the makers would look at doing a 30-50 years + steelbook basically so less issues storing and handly, and no worries at all regarding long term collecting. Knowing you can enjoy them for 20 years plus with no issues.

Some usual tin items can last well over 100 years if made well after all.

Any serious thoughts or info etc ?

Thanks SN

I have been collecting them since the DVD era G1 (Generation 1) steelbooks, now I only collect the G2 steelbooks, and out of 500 plus steelbooks, I only have 2 with really, really small rust dots (Full Metal Jacket(CA) & Transformers 3 (DE), I can say if you really take care of them they will last, I havent had problems with my steelbooks other than going back to the old ones and finding small dings that I had not noticed preveously.

Hi that doesn`t sound too bad, but I have heard of people having rust coming through even if well kept in 2 /3 years, maybe due to clear plastic covers/sleeves etc.

What is the difference between G1 and G2 steelbooks please, be interested to hear.

Does anyone have any quickly rusting issues on here then.

I must admit my main issues so far are how easily they scratch. Is it just ink, or thin paint ? please anyone.

Are some steelbooks, say the glossy ones lacquered at all.

Thanks SN.

You making some good points but I doubt anyone but the manufacturer would have any idea about this.

G1 just means DVD-sized. G2 is standard blu-ray case sized. There's not a quality or manufacturing difference between generations

Just always make sure to buy your second hand steelbooks from West Coast USA, where rust is not on our worry list.

I kid I kid.

No but for real, I don't think it would be even a concern if the steels are kept indoors and therefore an environment that is moisture free. (like... not sure who would keep their precious steelbook collection outdoors anyway )

Probably best to not set up a high efficiency humidifier in your movie room

Man that would suck if an entire steelbook collection rusted.

I know there were a lot of issues with the early game steelbooks , but when did the G1 dvd type appear please.

I emailed Scanavo yesterday about whether they could up the qauity at all, surely only a few pence extra per case to make them a longer term propostion. It could be passed on.

I think they are amazing, though don`t get me wrong, and getting one of those through the post is far more fun than the usual type, and also looking forward to it.

They are almost like a drug or something.

Its a shame they are often limited and cause daft price things as I`d guess more people would be in to them if more affordbale.

Be nice if the hammers etc got on to them, as they have been sat far to high price wise overall in the UK, but if a steelbook they would be worth what they ask.

In fact price wise with the downloading thing etc, I`d do new std Blu Rays at £10, then rolling on to £8 later. Imagine the volume you would shift, not only that but draw more people in to the Blu Ray experiance as well.

I think Blu Ray has been held back by the prices. A lot of people don`t even adjust the colour etc on thier TV`s so are fine with even a crappy copy DVD !!! or the other net thing !!!!.

Best SN.

I understood maybe a quarter of this ramble.

Oh and I've had few G1 steelbooks for 5+ years now. No sign of rust, and it's not like I even tried to take care of them in any special way. In fact, they've been to three different continents with my moving around. At this point I'm more worried about dents/scratches than rust.
