I agree, there is no way Universal will kick this movie to the curb. It is their best and most popular movie of the past 30 years and it will undoubtedly be one of the first 4K releases. Universal may have dropped the ball the first 8 years of blu-ray but they are starting to wise up.

You should let people know, that they're not doing a 2k scan either, they're not doing any new transfer or scan of any of the film trilogy. They're just using the same versions of the films that were on the previous Blu-ray's released in 2010 for the 25th Anniversary.

All we're getting for the 30th Anniversary set is extra bonus features, and individual releases of the films.

Universal has no intention of correcting the mistakes they made on the previous releases. This franchise it way too popular and important not to give it the proper treatment it surely deserves.
EDIT: Agreed. Perhaps if Steven Spielberg was brought in to handle the job? That seems to be the only way movies with his name on them will look good on BD, as E.T., Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Close Encounters have shown.

It's really weird that they're not redoing it though. I think I said in the Breakfast Club thread how messed up it would be if that got a remaster (which it did) but not BTTF, which is only one of Universal's most popular long-term franchises. Still, they've got Fast and the Furious now, why should they care about this silly old sci-fi series?

I think many would buy it if it was just a less messed with version of the same old master. Universal might be counting on that and won't do 4k unless UBD takes off.

Assuming this is true I guess it just shows that we are going to see very few major remasters until UHD comes in. Goodfellas may be one of the last we see for a while. It would also explain why Star Wars OT & Terminator 2 haven't appeared yet.

I think it just means they haven't done Back to the Future yet. Doesn't really say much for what else they are or are not doing in 4k.

Certainly there must be at least some 4k catalog restoration constantly going on at all studios right now, even those that might only give tepid support to actual physical UHD catalog discs.

If they did a Tremors and went back to the pre-DNR masters for each film instead of shitting out the same video encodes as before then I suppose that'd have to do. I've already got the untouched version of BTTF so I'd just need to get the sequels in that case.

But why hold back remastering BTTF for UHD BD when they're happy to have done it for Breakfast Club or the upcoming Apollo 13? That's what I don't get. Is TBC a bigger seller than BTTF or something? Or are they happy to spend the money on doing one but three at once is too much? (The Monsters Collection would suggest that that isn't a problem though.)

The unmolested 2k scan is fine.

I think the bean-counters think that the bigger the movie the less work they have to put into it, people will buy an anniversary edition of Back to the Future, no matter what it looks like.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything we can do, to get through to Universal, they shit on us (and their catalogue too), more than they give us warm hugs ...

The idiots don't seem to realise that we're happy to upgrade our disasters with new purchases, because we love the movies so much, yet they're happy to put classics like Jurassic Park and Back to the Future in a new box and call it an ultimate edition.

That makes a fair bit of sense, chippers. With the biggest titles they can get the most return on the smallest outlay, whereas if they want to refresh smaller catalogue titles they've got to put more effort into them to get people to buy them again. Or they can just release them in a steelbook.

I'm sure they're doing the remastering work just now, my point was that they're probably not going to release much of it on blu-ray just now for commercial reasons. The studios probably feel that if they release it on blu just now then a lot of people won't bother with a future UHD release (that they would net more from)

It seems ridiculous that they would redo The Breakfast Club and Apollo 13 but not Back to the Future.

My guess is they will just milk out the current transfer with as many re-releases as they can (as Warner has done with sooooo many titles) with new cover art, extras, etc. and then they will do a new scan in 4K for the 35th Ann especially since 4K will be more prominent in five years whether it be streaming and/or UHD BD. I think certain titles have more re-re-release value (with same old transfer) than others, but that is just a guess.

So, that poster in the first post, is just referring to a repackage or a couple of more extras?

I wish they would announce some remake of BTTF soon, as usually that guarantees that the original will get a new and fresh video release.

Bob Gale said that there is a clause that states that there will be no remakes or reboots or sequels of any of the BTTF trilogy. Plus, the original film has been selected by congress for preservation. So, thank goodness a terrible idea such as a remake will never see the light of day.

There is no guarantee that a 4k scan will look any better, Universal dnr their 4k scans more obviously than most.

Non-canon sequels are possible. The BTTF game from Telltale Games is a non-canon sequel that was made with Bob Gale's involvement.
