With the right marketing and word of mouth it will do well but all depends on how much they actually need it to make and the competition it'll face.

Budget is $180M right? It's a European production so I don't know what tax credits they get or what not to help alleviate that budget.

Yeah, circa $180 million budget. Hopefully though it'll be well received and not bomb like John Carter did although to be fair to John Carter, that was an enjoyable movie on the whole rather than a total stinker.

Valerian has an uphill battle because of a large budget, new IP and possibly the other things that generally go against a movie. Although let's look at what happens when things like Titanic and Avatar got made which were completely "original" as in the first entry of a new IP done that particular way.

So there's also hope a big new IP could launch.

But Titanic and Avatar had a revolutionary director behind them. I'd like to see this do well, we need more original films like this.

If it pulls in as much as Lucy ($463M worldwide) then they'd have to happy with that. Anything less and the sequel is very much in doubt.

As for "revolutionary directors", Luc Besson ain't no bum. He may not have reinvented the cinematic wheel recently but he's a hell of a director when the stars align.

Prepare for "They stole this and that from Star Wars" comments, once the movie is out.

Considering Star Wars wasn't the first visual Sci fi movie of its kind or did anything Imo never ever seen or read about, I'll just put it down to the popularity of the Star Wars movies that people tend to make such ignorant statements.

This is the guy who gave us Fifth Element for crying out loud. Not exactly Oscar Sci fi movie, but it sure as hell showed he has prior in that area.

Nothing is really original. It's just an idea executed in a different way.

I believe the images in the Valerian comic predate Star Wars by a decade. I don't see a problem though. We all get ideas from what we take in.
