Interesting. Though hopefully it still gets a proper physical disc release.

Paramount just alleviated some of their risk with Apple coming in to basically pre-finance content for their service, but still. Studios are not smart and proactive. They're dumb and reactive. If this film fails to turn a profit, the reaction won't be to just make these types of films for smaller budgets, it'll be to not do them at all. Those are jobs and opportunities that will be lost.

And if anyone else has read Grann's book, it's a $60M-$75M concept.

Men in Black made a bunch, but is still technically in the red.

Yesterday cost $26 million, but still hasn’t turned a profit.

The good news is paramount is keeping distribution rights. I’m hoping this becomes the new model going forward.

I am well aware of studio accounting and how profits are tabulated internally versus how they arrive at the formulas for net profit participants are two totally different things. And YESTERDAY didn't cost $26 million. That is pre-marketing and post tax credits (which also haven't been received as of yet).

I'm more excited about this than The Irishman.
This may be Scorsese's version of films such as There Will Be Blood, The Searchers, and Schindler's List.

Easily the most important and anticipated film of 2021.

$20M for Leonardo DiCaprio, $20M for Robert De Niro. You're at $40M already...

This is a Martin Scorsese movie. Not a Sean Baker one, shot on a phone.
1) it can be properly made for a hell of a lot less than $200M, 2) DeNiro shouldn't sniff $20M, his post IRISHMAN rate is maybe half of that and his pre- IRISHMAN resurgence was even less, 3) that's what makes Scorsese a frustrating filmmaker from a business standpoint. He can hold a budget when he has to. SILENCE was under $50M recreating feudal Japan (SHUTTER ISLAND, another period piece, was about 50% of the budget he wants for this, after inflation). his problem lately is that when he gets a whiff of a potential partner with money (like Netflix, who was also interested here, and Apple), he becomes unwilling to compromise.

That movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence, and could possibly go into production before “Killers of the Flower Moon” if DiCaprio were to sign on.
Not looking hopeful this will be a 2021 release huh?

Yeah, I guess he'll lead the McKay film, or another project (maybe PTA??) for a 2021 release, and Killers of The Flower Moon for 2022.

2021: Don't Look Up (or other projects)
2022: Killers of The Flower Moon

Lol. Look at the monster Netflix has created! Scorsese's gotten a taste of that big blockbuster budget, and now he knows he's too old and too good to compromise anymore.

What's worrisome is that the subject matter is important, but Scorsese, DiCaprio, and DeNiro all want big paydays.

None of them are hurting for money.

Apple will pay the full production budget and will be the “creative studio” on Martin Scorsese’s ‘KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON’.

The film will receive a full global theatrical release with Paramount Pictures set to pay marketing costs.

Having also read the book, agreed.

The thing is, I'm finding it hard to accept De Niro as Hale, and just a little bit less difficult to envision DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, and while there is no question Scorsese has the ability and credentials, my preference would have been for another director to tackle the book.

The problem with Scorsese, De Niro and DiCaprio is the emphasis is on them in place of the story.

The story, and related book, is so phenomenal, the above become a distraction, not an asset.

That said, if we're getting the Scorsese responsible for The Age of Innocence, all in. If we're getting the Scorsese of The Irishman, my preference is elsewhere.

My first choice would have been Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud and Loving), hopefully with both McConaughey and Michael Shannon in tow.

Taylor Sheridan would have been another exciting choice to write, and possibly also direct; if not him, teaming up with Villeneuve once again (Sicario).

While not a preference, Malick, perhaps with Pitt on board, would have been a worthwhile trip.

I don't think we'll get any new legit news on this one any time soon, unfortunately.

Robbie Robertson said months ago, that they had pushed it back to next spring (2021). That was just the start of filming.

The way things are going with the COVID stuff, who knows?

It may never happen, or we aren't going to see it for several years, at least.

Shame they didn't get it filmed, at least, before all this started.

Imagine thinking that The Age of Innocence is some sublime achievement over The Irishman (and I like TAOI a lot.)

Because those are like, the only two Scorsese films out there.
