In the FT.com article, there is a quote from Big Howie.

Quote:
Sir Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony, on Monday held out an olive branch, saying the company would be “open to dialogue” with the HD DVD camp to “grow the market”. The move came as new figures showed that Blu-ray had opened up a decisive lead over the rival home entertainment format.
What could that mean?

At first I said no, but I think the BDA should offer somethng to the HD DVD group, and maybe a 50% off to HD DVD users, just to get them converted to Blu. That would kill the HD DVD format.

Ummm, no. I spent my hard earned dollars supporting blu and did my part to make it the winning format. So now here I am with a Samusung 1400, a PS3 and over 30 BD's and I'm not the one getting a discount, its the people who made the wrong decision that could be getting the discount. This is economics and sometimes people make bad decisions. It's their own fault. Blu-ray pretty much has things in the bag now that WB is exclusive, so they shouldn't have any need to do any olive branching.

It's already suffered fatal wounds and is already in the dying process.

Not only that but Toshiba is not a studio like Sony / Sony Pictures. Toshiba is a (sitting) lame duck. Once Paramount and Universal decide to support blu-ray, Toshiba can't do anything about that but rant and rave.

All that matters now are the studios. Even IF Toshiba accepted said olive branch, they would just spin it into a dual player.

Toshiba obviously is not going down without a fight, though we just dropped one mother of a bomb on them. Surrender is not in their vocabulary at this point. Olive branches are pointless, and so are they.

But they might be trying to buy more contract time, so we need to look out!

Really, it's on Toshiba to look at the situation and do what's best for them as a company. How could they prolong the war, if that's what they wanted? Start producing duel format players and convince their studio's that this will not alienate them from the entire market..

Not saying its going to happen, but if the Olive Branch goes over, my guess is that BDA will tell Toshiba to make a Duel player to ease the transition. Paving the way for the above scenerio....

In that same vane, Toshiba should offer the rebate/$$ towards a new Toshiba player... NOT the BDA...

I don't want to see Dual Format players on the market. Let's get this thing overwith ASAP and forget HD-DVD even existed.

Why not extend an Olive Branch?

Doing so will only welcome more to the Blu party and could foster a sense of loyalty. I know I'd think a lot higher of a company that let me trade in audio tapes for CDs.

With only 7 posts, I realize you are a HD DVD supporter (or ex supporter... whatever) but you might best learn early that praising the king of downloads over here might get you banned

P.S. I will NEVER pay for downloads... EVER --> just to spite Microsoft for having given us the bastard child that is HD DUD. If I ever need to download something, I sure as hell won't be paying for it
I'm totally with you on that. I'd never pay for downloads either....unless it's from iTunes because I like apple more then microsoft.

You need SOME after market support for owners of HD DVD. Naturally, give them all the firmware you can throw at the existing players. Though VHS has virtually vanished you can still find players.

HD DVD deserves SOME of that same courtesy. But not for the next 20 years. This is exactly as I was hoping, dual players by Toshiba will support the red camp so they don't loose hundreds or thousands in HD DVD movie costs. But they can start to migrate to blu-ray. This way only the cost of the player is rationalized, not the entire movie library.

Toshiba owes them that much. If you don't want to give money back, at least give them a way to ensure their discs do not become obsolete. You shot at Sony's Olive Branch in 2004 Toshiba, do the right thing for a change.

I don't need anything. I was smart enough to educate myself and didn't buy into a stupid format. That's their own stupid fault. We don't owe them anything.

If Blu-Ray lost and HD-DVD won, I wouldn't be expecting HD-DVD to do anything for me.
