If he says BD can make his movie look more like he wants it to I would like to know specifically what technical dissadvantage HD DVD has which clearly results in his movie looking "less true".

Dont worry, im not a HD DVD fanboy...i love all HDM...i really want to learn something here.
Sure you do. Dude, I checked your limited other postings out and you're as transparent as glass. By the way, a more appropriate user name for you to have selected would have been Tiny Nuts.

Does anyone else think that he is going a little too far? I think that he is touting the format a little too hardcore and has gone to all-out bashing on the other side. "dick wads!?!" Michael common now, lets be professional!

I think he has lost every ounce of professionalism when it comes to the DUD vs BD war. Lets not forget the time when he loved HD DVD... (maybe for that brief moment in time when he was 'drinkin too much kool aide watching 300.') As much as I love Michael and his movies, he needs to quiet down a little bit and bring back the professional attitude that i know he has.

anyway that is my take on it.

It probably has something to do with hd idiots spamming his inbox and forums all butt hurt that someone would talk bad about their format of choice.
Hell spend 20 mins on hddigest forums and you will be saying worse things.

You're right, he is as ridiculous as his movies.. it's ok to pick and prefer a format, but what the hell do we even care about his opinion, it's an opinion like any other.. i don't really understand why the press is even talking about his opinion

not me, read the insanely stupid posts before his and the answer is cleare, they are dick wads. And calling a spade a spade and a dick wad a dick wad is just being honest.

It would be the equivalent of having a few people over to your home, they see some bad Ikea furniture you bought as a student and still have around and them telling you "You should take it from the corner of the basement and put it somewhere prominent. I bought the same thing from my antique dealer and she told me it was from the 18th century and worth over 10k$" and no matter how clear you make it that you bought it at Ikea for 50$ a few years ago because you did not have any more money then that to spend, their respond is loud obnoxious and consistently something like "how would you know, my antique dealer is the best and an expert, while you are a nobody that can't know where you bought it"

so have you seen each frame of the original film? If not then how can you say his opinion is like any other. He is one of the very few that knows each detail in the original and knows if it is or is not there in the transfer.

Thanks for the reply. So would you say you could tell the difference 10 of of 10 times which had lower vs higher bit rates if both encodes are done well? Honestly I am REALLY looking forward to Paramount releasing this movie on Blu-Ray.
...
As someone who does encoding for a living, not feature films but custom projects, I've got to say yes there is something Blu-ray does that can't be matched. We always try to get the best quality we can, but having the extra head-room makes a real difference. Both in being able to utilize higher peak data rates in scenes with lots of motion, utilizing a higher average data rate because of more space, and being able to put more quality HD material on the disc.

The other thing to consider is that every source material is different and if your original has lots of grain or motion, or subtle shade transitions sometimes you don't want.. or shouldn't mess with it, but just encode it all. Higher data rates also allow us to portray more accurate colors in addition to more accurate complex motion. Blu-ray makes a difference on many areas.

In the end, a well encoded Blu-ray is closer to the master and better able to convey what the creator wanted. Mr Bay is correct.

Yep.

While, if say, you're talking about a movie that is one color, that plays for 2 hours, you can compress it down to 1 color word * 1 byte [int] or pretty small , and no amount of additional bandwidth will improve it's appearance any.

Course, we have folks makign the argument of diminishing returns [ie, where the eyes stop noticing those things], but well, you can see the difference on the handful of titles that are multiple releases with optimized encodes for each.
