He didn't say that the calibrator cannot access the service menu. He said that the calibrator only accesses the service menu and doesn't touch the user menu.

My point was that if a calibrator cannot get access to the service menu on your tv. Do not spend $300 to $400 on a calibration, use the disc instead.

Thanks to George Lucas, you can now get a THX certified television and never worry too much about calibration anymore if CNET's latest review of the Panasonic THX monitors show any indications of good times to come.

Oh yeah.

Thats the best part of isf clalibration. Its a change that can't be erased by a powersurge/outage. If your tv ever goes out it reverts back to the calibrated settings. However if by some miracle something does happen, they have a troubleshoot for free at BB for anyone who got isf calibration done by them. It is covered for a full year I believe. While they calibrate your picture they also do your sound system with professional theater calibration mics and equipment.

Got a question... I've got my new Panny 50PZ85U setup... using CNET's settings under the (custom) mode and using tweaktv's settings using (cinema) picture modes. I prefer cinema, looks better in my opinion. However i have some concerns. I am upgrading from a samsung 1080P DLP also 50". The dlp is now in the bedroom. Sports and other cableTV material looks better on my DLP. What gives? The plasma's supposed to be a better display, no?! I have read how important it is to get ISF calibration done on these high-end sets, but still not convinced whether or not it's worth the money. I have heard $200 (reasonable) but places in my area want anywhere from $299 to $400. I'd like to receive some input from people that have done ISF calibrations, and how much they have spent.

I have used the AVE blu-ray disc, but the thing's just not very user friendly, I consider myself technically inclined, but the terminology and flow of information is beyond even what my college physics courses ever were!

By the way, I am using the ability to barely make out the right pluge chip as a basis on what looks right when using the calibration.

I have been waiting around for months for the Blu-ray version of the DVE calibrater that comes out in March and hope that will make things a little easier.
I have HD cable service through Time Warner as well. They've paired up w/ Scientific Atlantica who, imho, produces the poorest quality HD/DVR box in the world. I've had many problems w/ HD and Time Warner consistantly insists it is not them. I've found you have to use the composite cables for best results. You cannot accurately assess video/audio quality from what they give you. I'm about ready to switch to Dish Networks.

Anywho - I'm new to the forum and it's very cool to see a process for calibrating LCD HDTVs. I'm going to try this when I get home this evening!

The picture is more accurate, typically, on a plasma. The quality of the image all depends on the qualit of the signal. Also, you are probably used to the image of the DLP. You have read how important an ISF calibration is, yet you are not convinced if it is that important? They improve picture quality and lifespan of the set. If you care that much about picture quality, then they are worth it.

I've read about it... and just about ready to do it... but i live in an apt, and will possibly buy a house within the next few months, so i'll hold off on ISF calibration till i have a more "permanent" location for the new set (i should have mentioned this earlier) My question/concern is why is there such a big variance in price, $200-$400? Does a particular calibrator have "better" equipment, or do they do your audio too? I used audissey on my receiver for audio calibration, and i know my wiring is neatly and correctly installed, so i don't need that service. Do calibrators do just video?

Wait until you are in a more permanent position. The equipment is not better, the people may more available. Also, if a major retailer is ISF certified, they may be able to do it cheaper because they are a bigger company.

IC... thanks for the info. Currently my set is calibrated using the settings on Tweak TV. Blu-rays on PC and PS3 as well as video games and quicktime trailers looks awesome! One thing though, I workout at 24hr fitness and my display isn't as bright as theirs. Sometimes sports look very nice on those sets, but other material looks way too saturated. Seems to me like sports have particular color properties because of how they appear on certain plasmas, am I correct in assuming this?

i had my sony w4000 ISF calibrated last week.. i asked the engineer how far off the sony's settings were.. he said they were close on 'warm2' temp but there was a red error which was jarring.. he was able to go into the service menu and change the white balance to get it pretty much pefect..

i am really happy with the results.. i can see detail in dark areas of films i would nevr have seen before, and the color balance is spot on... i think my tv is the w4100 in the US

cheers,
mick

Default Ghosting/motion blur

I just want to reiterate what has been said in previous posts (in case someone hasn't read them). Turn off the Noise reduction when watching BDs! I had followed a recommeded setting for my Bravia BR4, but was bothered by a ghosting effect. After sifting through many posts, I finally read that I should set the Noise reduction to off. It made the all the difference. Now I get a little more grain, but the grain is far more preferable than the blurr.

Hey people wanted to see if you guys could answer a question for me. I have a Sony KDL-40V2500. Now i am trying to calibrate it using the DVE HD Basics Calibration disk. Now i already did it, but i am gonna do it again to make sure I got it right. Now what i wanted to do was compare the setting i got from the DVE Basics disk to the setting they had at Tweaktv.com . Now the don't have the settings for a KDL-40V2500 at Tweaktv.com, but they do have the settings for a Sony KDL-46V2500. So what I wanted to know is if I can use the settings for the KDL-46V2500 on my KDL-40V2500, wouldn't they be the same TV except for the size; I am guessing the 40 and 46 means the size in the model #. So if you guys could help me out i would appreciate it a lot, since all of this is new to me.
