Snyder’s take on the characters was rejected by audiences and disliked by critics. Just because Snyder had a vision doesn’t automatically mean his vision was any good. Every time Snyder makes a statement or announcement about his cut of Justice League, the more I begin to understand and actually agree with WB for panicking like hell originally. Because it appears to be another bloated, overlong mess that continues to misunderstand why people like these characters and seems to mistake edginess for being ‘mature’. I mean, this is a guy who made Watchmen into a film and proved how little he actually understood it since a majority of the themes and messages are completely absent in the film. |

Rich. Crapping on Snyder and his supposed misunderstanding of DC characters, but in the mean time you have a character as your avatar that represents the worst run of Star Wars films that misunderstands its characters. |

A lot more people seem to at least warm up to the extended version of BVS so (it would appear to me) WB panicking and editing the crap out of film is what got them into this mess (same could be said for Justice League *as of this posting*). Zacks DC films slap people in the face with his take on current events and that rubs a lot of people the wrong way, whereas Marvel is escapist fun...both are fine but for some reason people can't seem to like what people dislike (I don't like most of the Marvel films but that's my thing)
For what it's worth, while I like about Snyders Superman is the same reason why I don't like Nolans Batman. But as for WW84: Begining: Smacking you with kid friendly 80s fun Middle: Checklist of Wonder Woman fan service End: Pretty good and arguably better than the last act of the first film (tho not as good as the first film overall |

I really feel like The DCEU has something going for. While having Snyder spearhead everything might not be the best idea, but at least let him have the freedom he needs to make a movie he's known to make, great or not. |

I liked it as a boxing day popcorn movie spent with the family. It was really good for that - few nice scotches and it was entertaining. But that's it - it felt more like a Netflix blockbuster.
Was really disappointed with it compared to the first, which I adored. Very simple characters and the action scenes were goofy as hell. I can't also help but see IMAX as a way to now charge extra - just like 3D used to be. They only made use of it for the two scenes - was expecting more! Very happy I didn't end up paying £50 at the IMAX to watch it for 2. I hope it comes out on 3D blu. That's the only way I'll bother to re-watch it. Still was kind of a historic occasion - the premiere of a movie that I thought I'd see at the cinema in my home theater. Didn't really notice the Atmos but the HDR was well done. |

And Rey’s arc of finding belonging in the people around you who actually love and care for you rather than the family who abandoned you is a great arc too. And I’d argue anyday that Rian Johnson has a much firmer grasp on the themes and ideals of Star Wars than many of its so-called ‘fans’ and Johnson’s view on Star Wars is actually very in line with what Lucas wanted the sequels to be anyway such as blurring the lines between good and evil, showing the heroes as flawed etc while ultimately being a story about hope and redemption. Han and Leia’s son and Luke’s apprentice turning evil as a result of Luke’s attempts at teaching was actually from Lucas. But I’m not here to argue about Star Wars. In fact, Star Wars has got nothing to do with DC. So, nice job trying to deflect by changing the subject but it didn’t work. Last edited by pottyaboutpotter1; 12-27-2020 at 09:35 AM. |

Zack Snyder is very hit or miss for me. Quite truthfully, mostly miss. What’s weird though, is that his hits (300 & Watchmen) are damn near masterpieces, in certain ways. However, his misses are way off the mark. Making me wonder what’s going on in his head.
I was one of the few people who genuinely disliked the original WW film. The dialogue was eye rolling in parts, and the final act was horrible CGI, and lacked any wonder at all. Oddly, I’m looking forward to Jenkins’ and Gadot’s Cleopatra film, and hope it’s good. Everyone I know in person has panned WW84 really, really hard. I have yet to see it, but I’m planning to watch it, just so I can make up my own mind. Review aggregator websites cannot be trusted for actual real film criticism these days, so that doesn’t make any difference to me. Even reviews from friends and family aren’t going to sway me in either direction. Simply by virtue of being part of a film franchise, almost gives these films (as well as MCU films) a license to not have to truly worry about making something good or entertaining. It also makes all of them “review proof” in that there’s already a built in audience that will watch all of them sooner or later, simply because they’re already so heavily invested in the franchise. I’m not excluding myself here either. If this weren’t part of the DCEU, I’d skip it entirely. As it stands, I’m essentially just another member of the larger “captive audience”. |

I loved cheetah until her final form. That’s some of the worst CGI I’ve seen and they must have known it considering how dark and short the scene was 😳

My take on WW84 was meh. Way to much chit chat and less on action considering by tradition sequels are supposed to be bigger, bolder and better(?). I thought the bringing back of Steve Trevor was lazy and not really needed and Pedro Pascal hammed it up way to much to be a clever villain. I felt like he was miscast and could careless. Gadot was OK but just didn't seem as into the role as she was in the first film and her stints in JL and BvS. Wiig was OK too. Considering this movie is doing poorly overseas and Warner Bros. has yet to release the #'s on how well the US market is doing w/ theatrical and streaming I think the fate of a WW3 is looking grim.

I guess I'm in the minority that liked it. Although unlike most people I actually love the DCEU, warts and all.
First, Kristen Wiig killed it as Minerva. I know a lot of people were scratching their heads at her being cast in that role, but she obviously has A LOT of talent aside from comedy. Second, I actually liked how this film had less action and focused more on Diana as a person. I could also see how people wouldn't like this, as well. There were some things that had me confused, though. Such as the fact that [Show spoiler] . And to me the ending scene felt, out of place, to put it simply.

Lots of hate here for this film. I enjoyed it for what it is, a shallow popcorn flick. From a technical standpoint I was glad to see the IMAX scenes were in IMAX. Sure wish Nolan's film had this feature or option for the streaming editions. I mean, I'm mostly a CIH guy, but it is nice to have the option of seeing the IMAX stuff..... (though like everyone else they cropped IMAX down from the square format which I prefer to the more convenient 16x9 aspect ratio, losing a bunch of content on the bottom and the top).
I thought it was funny/ironic that the theme was essentially the same as [Show spoiler] I would have enjoyed some more humor, which it looked like we might get when they were doing a parody of 80s action flicks in the beginning, but that receded after a while. And while I was glad the third act avoided being wall to wall CGI battles (those put me to sleep) it felt rushed to hit the plot points....which is ironic given how long the movie is overall. Kinda want a TV series for WW. Would allow the character stuff to breathe more. That's where the interesting stuff is that builds the drama, tension, motivation, complexities and payoffs. Although DC movies have been more variable than Marvel ones, I sure am glad they aren't just trying to mimic the Marvel formula. Has DC hit their stride? Maybe not. But the more humor they add in, the better they tend to be. Shazam wasn't perfect but it got the humor bit right and was super refreshing. I don't think the tone would quite work for WW but some of the early scenes in WW84 suggest it might be worth exploring. It is pretty clear that the more CGI battles she is involved in the more it becomes generic cliched animated movie fare and that doesn't seem to please anyone. The battle with [Show spoiler] At first I was confused by [Show spoiler] , but then two things become apparent:First, Patty Jenkins is required to set up future DC films and [Show spoiler] Second, they did an interesting thing with death in this movie: [Show spoiler] Other funny thing: They mention [Show spoiler] , which is almost breaking the fourth wall....but the theme ends up being [Show spoiler] .And I sure am glad WB put this on home video! We've had one relative die, and lots of them are at risk, and the local ICU beds are completely full -- and yet people still insist on recreational travel and gatherings of friends and family and eschew mask whenever possible. I realize WB put it online for selfish reasons, but it also helps make the time at home more pleasant. Last edited by nathan_h; 12-27-2020 at 02:50 PM. |
