It was pretty good and some effective scares, up until the third act. CGI ghosts/demons/revolving mirrors just doesn't cut it; it's not scary. You're looking at a computer generated effect and you know it, which kills suspension of disbelief.

Also
[Show spoiler]is the demon in this film ever given a name or identity? We had a discussion right afterwards, whether it was Annabelle again, or another demon we've never seen before. I kept my eyes peeled at backgrounds, looking for VALAK spelling his name somewhere; I didn't spot anything.

[Show spoiler]Annabelle was a just a manifestation by the main demon to get into Judy’s head

I feel they purposely made it vague though, I think the story will continue with Judy and her (soon to be) hubby. We saw a brief glimpse
[Show spoiler]at the start when Lorraine saw it in the hospital room, and it took the form of Lorraine, Ed and Judy at various points, as well as that VHS freeze frame
so I don’t think the intention was to put it front and centre, more to have it dig deep in the psyche of the family.

I do feel they are holding something back as to not overplay their hands with the big bad and future threats. Maybe a recurring theme, with the unseen demon having a presence over future streaming shows or spin off movies.

As to the subject of spin offs, Judy and her partner have enough charisma to carry things through imo.

Honestly, timeline order really works. Basically the first 4 films are nothing more than build ups for two characters; Valak and Malthus, the demon behind Annabelle. But there’s the weird thing that Wan and the caretakers do before we get to the original film; they sort of build up to the Warrens either through dialogue or archival footage from the first two Conjurings. They hover over the proceedings until WAN’s film arrives. By the time we get to Conjuring 2 and Annabelle Comes Home, it feels like 2 (again this is all reversed engineered) is the epic climax to what came before. The Devil Made Me Do It feels like a one off that’s not really connected to anything. But Last Rites rectifies all of that and brings everything to a close.

You will be surprised how well it all comes together if you do the timeline order watch.

Honestly, who the demonic presence is is not the point of the film. However, I personally think there a clues within the film that suggest that the antagonists are the ones the universe has always been fighting.

I agree with this. I did the chronological order watch to build up to Last Rites and it works surprisingly well.

It was my first time trying it. Don't worry, I won't ever do it again. That was a b to try and do.

But I tell you what, I have a feeling no one has the same inner voice reading them as I do. When I hear it, it's both hilarious and validating.

Errrgg, that was my problem with the second and third film. CG. IS. NOT. SCARY! Some Hollywood horrors treat the third act like a blockbuster action movie needing to go big with special effects.

Damn. I know this is “supposed to be” the end but with these numbers, how do you stop if you’re WB?

This franchise is a legit cash cow for them.

Goddamn. This will plummet next weekend most likely, but goddamn, that is crazy. WB is having a great f'ing year.

Last Rites ranks as the eighth No 1 opening for Warners this year, and also their seventh movie to open north of $40M; I’m told that’s a record nobody else has done. Warner Bros is now ranked No. 1 in domestic, overseas and global marketshare with $1.73B stateside, $2B international and $3.77B worldwide.

It’s not the end, it’s really obvious where things go from here in terms of spin offs.

Opening weekend just crushed any and all expectations.

Especially after part 3 which seemed to be a victim of the post-Covid movie going experience.

It was decent. New Warren family members were a nice addition.

Looking at the box office maybe this won't be the last one

Sounds like you got to see the movie and enjoyed it. I've seen a few of the films and will check this out on video.
