Default OFFICIAL STATEMENT - "WATCHMEN" settlement

"Watchmen" Dispute Has Been Settled
By Garth Franklin, Friday, January 16th 2009 1:15am
per www.darkhorizons.com - details are as follows:

Though specific details haven't been released, the dispute between Warner Bros. Pictures and 20th Century Fox over "Watchmen" has been resolved according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Both studios are scheduled to present a settlement to Judge Gary Feess this morning and request that the case be dismissed.

Fox will not be a co-distributor on the $130 million film, nor will it co-own the "Watchmen" property. It will share in revenue derived from it, a deal expected to involve a sizable cash payment and a percentage of the film's boxoffice grosses.

Warners is said to be after producer Larry Gordon and his attorneys to reimburse the studio for costs of the settlement.

Here's an official joint statement from both parties that has just been released:

"Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture Watchmen in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims Warner Bros. and Fox, like all Watchmen fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film's March 6 release in theatres."

----- Great news obviously, can't wait to see this (in IMAX hopefully!) -----

very happy this is taken care of. id hate for that release date to get messed up. perfect for this movie.

At midnight of 03/06/09 the clock will strike 12 and Watchmen will (hopefully) come alive on screens all over the world.

After X-Men 3 it's very unlikely I'll see Wolverine, Fox doesn't get to blame that one on Warner, that's their own ineptitude.

So just what did Fox get?

Quote:
Now that Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox have settled their dispute regarding the upcoming "Watchmen" film, many are wondering what the terms of the settlement turned out to be.

According to Variety, Warner Bros gets the right to release the film on March 6th, as planned, and Fox's logo will not be listed anywhere.

In return, Fox ended up getting a cash payment somewhere between $5 million and $10 million, which covers the $1.4 million the studio invested in development fees and the millions they spent in legal fees during the case.

More importantly, Fox will get a gross participation in "Watchmen" that ranges between 5% and 8.5%, depending on the film's worldwide revenues. Fox also participates as a gross player in any sequels and spinoffs.

"Watchmen" marks the second big legal affair for WB in recent memory. It wasn't that long ago that the studio had to pay $17.5 million to settle claims so that the studio could release "Dukes of Hazzard"; the "Watchmen" settlement is likely to cost WB much more money than that.

BTW - This has been rated R for strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity, and language. Sounds like it's going to be good!

....and accurate!

Except for the ending, which has been changed from the graphic novel.
