Call me crazy but I like them both. It's unfortunate Howard didn't get a chance to at least do another movie to show us more of how he would approach the character as it developed.

Me too. I actually never thought he was all that great in Iron Man originally, but rewatching him after seeing Cheadle in the role makes me appreciate his performance more. He at least seemed like Tony's friend. Downey Jr. and Cheadle had zero chemistry.

Cheadle always seemed like he really didn't want to be there. He looked disinterested. As for Howard that dude is tripping without luggage. He is so out there that he is interstellar.

I didn't think either actor was very good in the part and I thought the idea of having another superhero with the exact same suit of armor albeit in a different color was a terrible choice in the first place.
And yes I'm aware that war machine is from the comic

Howard left due to a contact dispute correct?

I’ve never particularly liked Cheadle in these films, he’s very forgettable. Not used by the directors/producers imo. He was brilliant in the Ocean’s movies and those had big casts, so he’s perfectly capable of shining in limited moments.

In the comics, War Machine's role made sense. Like there was a certain story-arc there. But in the MCU, however, he comes off as just Black Iron Man. Just because War Machine is popular in the comics, doesn't mean you can just throw him in there all of a sudden. Because not everyone reads comics.

Howard was the "Original" Rhodey and even with more time in the role, Cheadle never really got any material good enough to make him shine or actually come across better than Howard which was the issue imo.

The role ultimately wasn't spun off and stayed minor so guess it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but had they nailed a better role, it could have possibly been a spin off.

Isnt the only reason he didn't come back is because he was paid more than RDJ for Iron Man and did not want to accept the lesser financial offer for the sequel.

Yeah..... but the way I see it is that Ike Perlmutter thought he was too expensive for an actor playing a supporting role. So I understand that aspect. BUT at the same time, he AGREED to pay Howard the amount that was promised in the contract. Imagine at your job your boss tells you, yeah, we're going to cut your paycheck. Of course anyone would be pisst. So I don't blame Howard in that aspect. But at the same time, why didn't you pay Robert Downey Jr. a lot more to begin with. Oh, that's right, he was in drug problems at that time. Then all of a sudden they changed their minds. As much crap as I give Howard, Marvel is almost arguably the one that's fault here.
