Sony "Mastered in 4K" Blu-ray Titles May 14 and July 16

For some reason I kind of find it funny that Pineapple Express is coming out as a "Mastered in 4K" release. I realize that any and all films will certainly look better with this kind of treatment properly applied to them, but at the same time, this isn't exactly the kind of movie that I think of when I think of a movie that would get this kind of treatment.

I'm hoping that the next wave has some older films. The Life Of Brian and Bram Stoker's Dracula could do with an overhaul.

I know I've said that before but oh well lol

Here's a question for everyone. What Sony catalog title would you like to see with a brand new high quality remaster because the current transfer leaves a lot to be desired?

The Fifth Element (could still look better)

Groundhog Day
Jerry Maguire

A lot of this is nitpicking outside of Dracula and Rudy but all of those have room for improvement. Most of the 2007 stuff that is good like The Patriot would benefit as well.

Dracula, but that was Zoetrope not Sony, apart from that only Black Hawk Down

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete would be a good candidate but doubtful it will ever happen. That movie had new scenes made for 1080p HD while the rest of the movie had aliasing among other issues.

Me too! The current BD has pretty good picture quality, but room for improvement. And if I remember correctly the current BD is an "extended cut" -- I'd really like to have the original theatrical release.

It was an invigorating experience to work on the re-mastering of Groundhog Day with colorist John Dunn at Sony’s Stage 6 Colorworks facility. We were seated at the Baselight at a screen height distance of less than 2x; the clarity and detail from the scanned negative at 4K was staggering. The process of re-mastering this much beloved film was a revelation. John and I were able to extract incredible detail, retiming shots with subtle color and density controls, as well as selecting multiple power windows—generating a level of scene to scene consistency that had not been possible with the limited controls of the photochemical era. Consistency in this film is especially important because of the oft-repeated scenes shot on successive production days in changing light. The richly dense and fine grain Kodak negative clearly contained even more than the 4K data scanned. After an initial runthrough, I asked John to exploit his full digital “toolbox” in his first pass at re-mastering. “This is no sacred cow,” I said.

There is a notable different between 'some' bonus features being dropped and 'all' bonus features being dropped. Sony don't even have the space issue because the encodes don't max out all the space available on the disc and even if they did they could always include a 2nd disc dedicated to special features.

but no they instead hold off entirely on the extras expecting people to upgrade to their 'Mastered in 4K' tittles whist keeping previous editions.

Stealth and Ultraviolet, because they both have MPEG-2 compression and I find them both looking a little bit soft.

Good call! I was just going to post, if we are listing old Sony titles that would benefit from this line, Bad Boys II would be a great choice.
