The Shining

One of those "what can I say that hasn't been said" films.
A masterpiece.

🎃 👻 😈 after watching this for the umpteenth time, this film is so well acted and has all the exceptional sets as well as a very excellent story, along with a brilliant musical score❣️ not many “horror” films can surpass this greatness IMHO! 😉

10/30: The Haunting (1963) (First-Time Viewing) - - This was great. I've seen the 1999 version before this, so I was a little familiar with the story going in. While the remake is a guilty pleasure for me, this original version is superior in all regards. The setting itself is just incredible. From the menacing facade, to its lavishly decorated rooms, and labyrinthine corridors, it provides the film with a wonderful gothic atmosphere. The four main characters were all nicely-developed, and complimented each other's traits well (e.g. expert vs cynic, adventurous vs sheltered character, etc..)

The first half is set up like a traditional haunted house film, with things going bump (and bang) in the night. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Theo and Nell, which took on a sort of fun sleepover quality. I thought the second half delved more into psychological horror territory. We hear a lot more of Nell's inner dialogue in this half, and all of her suppressed trauma starts to come to a head.

I found the writing, and and dialogue to be really strong in the film too. I'm sure a lot of originates with the source novel from Shirley Jackson, but I think it's part of why the film still holds up so well today. And while I wouldn't consider the film particularly scary by today's standards, I think its finale and the closing lines of dialogue are, for lack of a better term, incredibly haunting.

10/29:

The Mad Magician 3D (1953)
Not quite on the level of Vincent Price's previous 3D flick, House of Wax or one of his strongest, House of Wax but it's still manages to be a fun time killer with some good 3D.

10/30/24:

I Am Sam...

-Drag Me To Hell (2009):

-Darkman (1990):

A spin through the Raimiverse in today's double feature. Drag Me To Hell stars Alison Lohman as Christine Brown, an ambitious, upwardly mobile young woman working in a bank who has her eye on the assistant manager position when she's presented with a key opportunity to prove she has the stuff to make the tough decisions. When elderly Mrs. Ganush (a cadaverous Lorna Raver) comes in to request another extension on her mortgage. Christine makes the decision to deny her, and Mrs. Ganush makes a spectacle of herself, literally groveling on her knees in front of an embarrassed Christine. After work, Christine is attacked by the surprisingly spry Ganush, who, after a violent confrontation, rips a button off of her coat and intones a curse upon it. Christine is now beset by the "Lamia", an impish spirit from Romani folklore that torments its victim for three days before dragging their soul, kicking and screaming, into the brimstone pits of Hades. Now, with the help of her disbelieving yet supporting boyfriend (Justin Long) and a rattled fortune teller (Dileep Rao), Christine must find a way to purge herself of her curse before the inevitable, as the Lamia fiendishly toys with her before moving in for the kill.

Sam Raimi's throwback to his early low-budget horror stomping grounds after years in Blockbusterland, Drag Me To Hell is one of his best efforts, showcasing all of his spry visual gymnastics and dark sense of humor, with Lohman bringing screamy conviction to her lead performance. Set to a superb Christopher Young score and boasting the kind of enveloping sound design that's never nominated for an Academy Award, but deserves to be, the movie knocks the viewer around like a pinball, climaxing with a bravura conclusion that evokes the classic Burgess Meredith Twilight Zone cry of "It's not fair...it's not fair!"

Skipping back to his first studio project, Darkman stars Liam Neeson as Dr. Peyton Westlake, a scientist on the cusp of developing a new synthetic skin substitute, one that can allow burn victims to attain a new sense of normality. The rub is the skin bubbles away into a puddle of goo after 99 minutes' worth of exposure to the light. Violently attacked in his lab one night by a gaggle of gangsters (led by Larry Drake, doing a witty Edward G. Robinson turn), who dunk his face in acid and leave him horrifically burned, Peyton escapes from the hospital where a radical new medical procedure cuts him off from his pain receptors, but leaves his emotions in a constant, heightened state of extreme turmoil. Returning to the bombed-out ruins of his lab, he vows to finally perfect his rubbery skin and regain his life with girlfriend Julie Hastings (Frances McDormand), but in the meantime, utilizes his Mission: Impossible-style masks to disguise himself as the gang members who ruined his face and life, playing them off each other Yojimbo-style in the pursuit of REVENGE!!!

Darkman isn't "pure" horror in the traditional sense (being more of an action flick with ghoulish touches), but Neeson's crisped visage and the film's heightened sense of melodrama evokes classics like The Phantom Of The Opera. Raimi, like he did in his Evil Dead films, utilizes the camera with a jackhammer ferocity that replicates the feeling of rapidly paging through a comic book better than much of the anonymous $200 million superhero junk of the modern day (even Raimi's own Dr. Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness only had glimmers of his old style in it). Set to Danny Elfman's excellent score (which melds perfectly with Bill Pope's overheated cinematography and the narrative's purple prose (you can practically see the speech bubbles forming over the actors' heads as they deliver lines like "What is it about the dark? What secrets does it hold...?"). The movie is ultimately a bit on the slight side, but to my inner sixteen-year-old, it remains a stylish, endlessly rewatchable kick that does more with its $14 million budget (or, about 14% of Robert Downey, Jr.'s paycheck for the next two Avengers movies) than most bloated Capesh!t does with several hundred mil to play around with.

-Your Monster ^ (2024):

Melissa Barrera plays Laura Franco, a young woman recovering from a bout of cancer (her lout of a boyfriend, played by Edmund Donovan, breaks up with her in the hospital!) who returns to her New Jersey apartment only to discover her childhood monster in the closet is actually quite real. After her initial freakout, she dubs her housemate "Monster" (played by an amusingly nonchalant Tommy Dewey) and tries to adjust to the strangeness of her new living conditions even as she tries out for the lead role in the stage musical her ex originally wrote for her.

An example of Hell Hath No Fury, Your Monster is a consistently amusing view, thanks to the burgeoning friendship -- and bestial romantic chemistry -- between Barrera and Dewey, leading to a nifty narrative reveal of an ending. It's hardly "scary", but as a metaphorical examination of how a spurned lover turns inward for self-comfort, it's a fun little exercise in Lite horror/comedy.

-Time Cut ^ (2024):

Madison Bailey plays Lucy, a teen girl in 2024 living in the shadow of her deceased older sister, Summer (Antonia Gentry), who was murdered by a serial killer (clad in your typical, off-the-rack plastic mask) in 2003. But a time-travel contrivance delivers her back to the era of Ugg Boots, Heelies and Avril Lavigne, where she's caught in a dilemma... does she intervene in historical events and prevent her death, or does she do nothing, because if she does, her parents might never decide to have a late-in-life second child, causing her to wink from existence like Marty McFly?

Your standard-issue slasher flick that clogs the streaming services every October, with all of the usual signposts and affectations of the modernized riff on the old 80s formulas (including the textureless, Jell-O cube cinematography and generically attractive young casts), Netflix's Time Cut isn't awful, but there's not a thing to distinguish it in either the slasher or time travel genres, with weaksauce PG-13 violence (where everyone's Off-Screened to death) and lack of temporal cleverness. Last year's Amazon Prime release Totally Killer was far more amusing and had more fun with the signposts of its late-80s setting (or maybe I'm just feeling old as hell that the early 2000s is now far enough away to have wan nostalgia movies like this devoted to them), and executive producer Christopher Landon's Happy Death Day movies managed to avoid the PG-13 slasher pitfall by having more likable characters and creative situations. Tweens might get a few chuckles out of this, but anyone else will find it a mild chore.

First watch. Not a bad 3rd entry but it felt like it took a step back. Quite a few people in this one I met at the local con. got a laugh out of the Jay and Silent Bob cameo.

10/30 - Daddy's Head -
Weird film but had some good possibilities. Not great but had a couple good moments.

[Show spoiler]9/1 - Deliverance - Great performance from Andra Day and refreshing take on Exorcisms.

9/2 - Longlegs - Just terrible and very slow. Nic please stop.

9/11 - The Witch - Good film! Loved the lead actress!

9/12 - Terrifier - Low budget but up my alley.

9/14 - Immaculate - Loved the lead actress and very good film.

9/15 - The Descent Part 2 - Not as good as the first, but love that it was a direct sequel.

9/16 - You'll Never Find Me - Mixed here, but it was ok I guess.

9/18 - Blink Twice - Very good movie and great directorial debut from Zoe.

9/19 - The Rental - Not a bad slasher film.

9/21 - Terrifier 2 -
Good follow up to the OG. Savage kills and the lead actress was fire! Cant wait to see part 3.

9/24/24 - All Hallows Eve -
Its an ok Anthology film, where the character Art the Clown was created. Not as good as the Terrifier films though.

9-26 - All Hallows Eve 2 -
Ok film but nuthin special. Very short films in this Anthology Horror.

9/27 - Bloodline -
Stiffler the serial killer. Kinda bland but not the worst film Ive seen.

9/28 - Firestarter -
Love the original but this remake was very underwhelming. The female lead was pretty good but the script wasnt it.

9/29 - Thanksgiving -
Finally a slasher about Thanksgiving. Very entertaining but predictable. Wouldnt mind seeing a sequel...

9/29 - Talk To Me -
Original concept and its something about foreign horror films. Very good watch....

9/30 - Nightmares (1983) -
It was good seeing this classic after so many years. The Video Game & Rat stories are my favs in this.

10/1 - Speak No Evil (2022) -
Im not a big subtitle fan but foreign Horror hits different. Disturbing ending but good movie.

10/2 - The Hangman -
A waste of a hour & half. Just not a good film. Please stay away from this.

10/2 - The Cellar -
Not a good night of films. Elisha Cuthbert couldnt save this film.

10/3 - Break -
This has nuthin on Frozen. Didnt realize it was a foreign film with a terrible English dub version. You can skip this one.

10/4 - Friday the 13th (1980) -
My fav Horror franchise. Not the best film in the series but its what kicked things off.

10/5 - Friday the 13th Part 2 -
Jason is born! My fav Horror film. Potato Sack Jason. Ginny is the best Final girl in any Horror movie.

10/6 - He's Out There -
Decent slasher film with solid acting by the lead actress and her kids.

10/7 - All Hallow's Eve: Trickster -
3rd film in the series, weird but had decent atmosphere. Nuthin special and one wild story toward the end.

10/8 - Speak No Evil (2024) -
Solid remake and cool switch up on the klymaxx. Original film slightly better but both good films.

10/9 - The Entity -
This didnt age as well as I wouldve hoped but Barbara Hershey is still nice to look at.

10/10 - Oddity -
Pretty solid film. Very original and kept my attention....

10/11 - Friday the 13th Part III -
Good entry in the series where Jason finds his iconic mask. Always a fun watch.

10/12 - Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter -
One of the best entries in the series. Corey Feldman was great and good atmosphere.

10/13 - Never Let Go -
Good watch, good cinematography. Nice performances and overall good film.

10/14 - Strange Darling -
This one caught me off guard. Like the setup and how the story was told. Solid twist as well.

10/15 - Sting -
Decent film about an alien spider. Had potential to be better but not a bad watch.

10/16 - The Substance -
What a concept. Very good execution. Demi is always great. Very good film.

10/17 - It (2017) -
A good updated version to the series. Good cast and Pennywise lived up to his name....

10/18 - Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning -
This one used to be the Stepchild of the series back in the day. But it was special for me at the time when it came out. Pam is a top 3 final girl in the series and smokin hot! Most nudity shown up to this point in the series and maybe overall. Good watch despite unpopular twist....

10/19 - Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives -
One of my favs in the series and pretty much top 3. One of my fav Jason portrayals also. Top 3 kill in this one with the back breaker. Great classic film.

10/19 - Watcher -
The lead actress was nice to watch but the overall film wasnt all that. Decent ending but very slow film.

10/20 - You're Killing Me -
This had some viewing quality. The ending was pretty cool. But it didnt blow me away.

10/21 - Baghead -
Decent concept and solid execution. Couldve been better but overall decent watch...

10/22 - Cuckoo -
Weird film and weird concept. It was somewhat enjoyable but not anything special..

10/23 - Freaky -
Well the Freaky slasher of Freaky Friday in a nutshell. Entertaining film and some solid kills.....

10/24 - The Mortuary Collection -
Decent Anthology film. Some weird stories but the last story was the best one.....

10/25 - MadS -
Dont do subtitles to much. This was a decent film about a spreading virus and the evil that comes with it. Not a bad watch but wanted an English dubbed version...

10/26 - The Reading -
Surprisingly solid film. Monique is growing on me as an actress. Nice twist as well.

10/27 - The Babadook -
Pretty good film with great performances from both the son & the mother.

10/28 - It's What's Inside -
Man what a ride this was. I was glued to the tv just keeping up with who was who! Really good film.

10/29 - Don't Move -
Heard good things, but this film fell way short. Very underwhelming.
