I’m sitting this one out though. Vikander is a good actress who excels in period dramas but I just don’t think she has that ‘je ne sais quoi’ to be a bonafide movie star leading action-adventure franchises. And judging from the reactions in here it seems this is a movie pandering more to the video game fans, giving them multiple nerdgasms per screening, which means nothing to me since I’ve never played a Tomb Raider game.
Fair enough. I like Vikander & thought she held her own in this film. It was a good but not great film overall. I never played the older games myself but have played the 2013 version that this film was molded after though. I'm old enough to not have a "nerdgasm" so I took this film at face value & just enjoyed myself.

The movie is for a niche market. Similar to Blade Runner. Just doesn't have the appeal for mass audience.

I’m sitting this one out though. Vikander is a good actress in period dramas but I just don’t think she has that ‘je ne sais quoi’ to be a bonafide movie star and to lead action-adventure franchises. She was incredibly bland in her previous two tentpoles (Bourne, U.N.C.L.E), and those were just supporting roles. And judging from the reactions in here it seems this is a movie pandering more to the video game fans, giving them multiple nerdgasms per screening, which means nothing to me since I’ve never played a Tomb Raider game.
If you hope for a sequel then go support this one lol

I thought Vikander was great in the role, not bland at all. She has less to do later in the movie when she's mainly just trying to survive (there's only so much you can do climbing cliffs and shooting arrows), but I think she shows a lot of personality early in the movie before she gets to the island.

And I've only played the first reboot game and my girlfriend has played none of them so we have no nostalgia/attachment at all (I can honestly not even remember a single part of the game) and we both thought it was a really fun flick ~

It's a start. A slow start, but that doesn't mean it can't be a sleeper hit.

Saw the film today. It was good fun but the story is a lift from the 2014 game so I mostly knew what was coming. Alicia is so gorgeous! I enjoyed it though, not a classic but good fun and a better Lara than Jolie. I hope there is a sequel but with an original story.

I see it doing around $75,000,000 domestically, I think the original $55 million forecast won't be far off.

I'm not saying you're wrong as far as the numbers. But if it does $75M and the prediction was $55M -- that's definitely FAR off.

That's missing by over 36%.

I see it doing $55-$60M domestically. It won't have legs.

I have to say I really enjoyed it for what it was despite some plot contrivances. Vikander was a big improvement on Jolie and so was this version of the character, which was lifted from the rebooted game franchise pretty much but so what, it worked. Goggins never puts a foot wrong as far as I'm concerned and the action and visuals delivered what you'd want. It's a fun origin story that efficiently introduces this Lara Croft and sets up potential sequels. I dug it!

I just hope it's enough of a success to get a sequel and to convince studios to keep trying video game movies, like Mortal Kombat, Halo and Gears of War off the top of my head.

$127M after three days WW? Just double that and we'll get a sequel. Nice but slowish start.

Wow 126 million WW after a weekend and in some markets a week. The potential for another one is huge. People also love this one and want another one and its then highly likely the sequel will surpass this one in its gross WW. I think a sequel is a done deal

I was coming at it from a meeting in the middle kind of thing, they said 55 million, I think 75 million, so if it hits 65 million ... it won't be too far off. Obviously 36% difference when it comes to predictions is far off!

A domestic dud for sure, Im hoping it gets past 65m but who knows.

Remember this movie has tax incentives from south Africa. I dont think it needs to hit $300m WW for a sequel. $250m WW should suffice.

Quite a letdown to end the movie in a
[Show spoiler]pawnshop.
Should have ended with her
[Show spoiler]in full gear, starting a new mission.
Also kinda weird to have her
[Show spoiler]shun guns in the jungle in favor of a bow, then have take up pistols out of the blue.

It's good stuff, but I doubt it gets a sequel unless Alicia makes other hits, and stays bankable.

I think, when it comes right down to it, we're both right.
