Apart from Eps I-III and the Clone Wars show everything else was wiped from the slate, doesn't matter how big it may have been at the time.

Critics and audience give a lot of leeway to science fiction screenplays just because in their mind they are supposed to be shitty, add to this the benevolence that many critics seem to have for some directors.
Prometheus is another example, many critics that liked the movie when it came out changed their mind in a few months once they really started thinking about it and forgot that Ridley "Alien" Scott made it and started to value it for what it was.

I wonder what audiences and critics think now after they've gotten over that new car smell? It's an entertaining movie in spite of itself but it's got some plot holes you could drive the entire Starfleet through. The Villain's plan is so illogical that I'm surprised that Spock didn't keep his eyebrow raised throughout the films running time.

Hmm. Explains the great reviews for Mad Max: Fury Road...(by your "theory")

Prometheus still suffered mixed reactions from day one. Especially from audiences. The hardcore hated Into Darkness before it opened.

I didn't say that they gave bad reviews to great movies but that they tend to forgive a lot when it comes to bad sci-fi.

And Into Darkness had the same writers of the first (one of them even wrote Prometheus), those guys always write shit movie screeplays, it's the writing that sank the Star Trek movies, not the directing, and fans knew it, predicted it and their prediction turned sadly right.

There seems to be a general worry about the film not being marketed THREE months before it's release...I can't understand why. If they start posting TV spots now people will get annoyed with it. They need to put out theatrical releases early for other films because they're is no built in market for those films. Star Wars is almost guaranteed 1 billion Box Office world wide. They don't need to start driving it down our throats just yet.

I for one have been very pleased, we had that short teaser a full year in advance. Then a longer one. Then hype begins to build. Force Friday in September. A full trailer in October. Then Battlefront. Followed by an Age of Ultron-type media Saturation that will be everywhere you look.

Disney is smart and they know how to market. And I hope to gosh they aren't trying to lure in the dumb teen crowd. This movie should be marketed to the 25-45 age range. You know, the ones that actually have money to spend on toys, etc...teens can make or break a movie, but Star Wars is insulated as a major hit no matter what. It doesn't need the teens to see it. Plus, there'll be almost nothing at the theater to compete with it. All the other studios know not to mess with it.

As for all the "most people don't know it's coming out in December, or that it has the original cast." No offense, but most people are stupid...They only know what's right in front of them and have no attention span, so again, they don't need 3 months of hype...

As for the order introducing people to Star Wars. I've done it once after all 6 movies were released and I like the flashback concept, which I thought I invented, but alas, my own delusions of grandeur got the best of me!
Episodes 4 & 5 (to not spoil the Vader reveal)
Then the Prequel Trilogy (trust me, with new eyes on it, people are shocked at how far that helpful little kid in episode 1 falls...and knowing it's coming makes his character in the first one seem so hauntingly sad)
Then cap it off with Return of the Jedi (which flows really well after Revenge of the Sith tone-wise and really drives home Vader's story in a nice 1-2 punch) Though if you can show them the version of Jedi that doesn't include Vader's "No" thus destroying one if the best scenes in the series, that helps. So again 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6...
I agree, it's most likely Lucasfilm is still editing the movie, adding sound effects and voice over dubs, waiting for the special effects to filter in, waiting for the soundtrack to be finalized, testing it out, etc before approving the 3rd trailer. They mentioned Fall 2015 for the 3rd, more revealing trailer, which is fine. We have two trailers with millions of views already, so the word is out there's new Star Wars on the way for anyone not living in a cave.

Keeping in mind Disney's marketing for John Carter (of Mars) which overlooked the importance of the story (sidenote; it's been reported some ideas Lucas was inspired by for Star Wars originated from the John Carter of Mars books), focusing too much on action, and The Lone Ranger. Otherwise, I can imagine Lucasfilm will have good ideas for marketing Star Wars VII as we've already seen.
And I agree, Star Wars is one of the most recognized film series in the history of mankind worldwide. The VIII merchandise is in most stores too already.

I think we may have another Kahn issue here, and also that would mean that scene with Finn and the blue lightsaber could only mean that Finn was just defending himself with it.
I wonder if that's an error or just the card's way of saying "bad guy, good guy, etc", since it omits the Empire icon and from the card's list, only shows the Sith and Bounty Hunter as two "bad guy" options. Droids being robots.

Agree. He may be a big surprise in VII, that Lucasfilm doesn't want to reveal. I can imagine a character so important as Yoda won't be overlooked since Luke has been so dependent on him and Obi Wan Kenobi. I will expect to see both in spirit form or in voice over to some degree. If not, that would be like if Jurassic World forgot to show Tyrannosaurus Rex. Thankfully T Rex appeared as a big factor in the film.

That's just how they approached the whole event at the time, but it didn't "elevate" SotE's canon status in any way: it was always EU.

And the problem with John Carter was that they had way too big of a budget based on a series of books from the early-middle part of last century. The movie really isn't as bad as people make it out to be, it just didn't do well at the box office. They wanted to make more but it didn't do well so they didn't.

They're currently filming one Anthology movie and Episode VIII is getting going. Disney has full faith in this project and they're showing confidence with what they have. If they were trying to shove more and more down our throats this early it'd be a big red flag warning sign. They're playing it cool because they know they have a hit...

That is your *opinion*, and not what actually happened.

And Prometheus was Ridley Scott's doing. Everything people complain about, on the commentary Ridley's like "that was my idea".

There are lot of things that are inherent to the screenplay, like how both theology and evolution are treated, when someone calls the evolution via natural selection "Darwinism" it's a symptom that he does not know what he is talking about.

Sounds like a Star Wars rip-off. Why can't Hollywood have original ideas anymore?

I heard that the music is composed by some guy named John Williams. Is he any good?

Disney won't face the same challenges marketing Star Wars as they did John Carter. Not concentrating on story was foolish for a property most young people were unfamiliar with. But we all know everyone knows Star Wars, so they probably can get away with leaking less of the plot. I didn't even need to see a trailer to know I was going to buy a ticket for this movie.

The Empire icon is omitted because the Empire fell at the end of Return of the Jedi. They are being replaced by a smaller group whose goal is to resist changes brought by the Rebels and return things to how they were. If the Empire was Space Nazis, then these guys are like the Space KKK. Their name is The First Order, they were likely not named because it's a new name.

Looks like Hayden Christiansen could be heading back to the SW universe in VIII.

I doubt anything that happens in the ST will contradict the events in SOTE, so that story is still canon for me

RE: Finn and Rey's trading card:

It's pretty simple. Finn is a force sensitive who isn't training to be a Jedi by the end of this film. Rey is. It doesn't mean Finn won't ever be a Jedi. Just that he isn't currently.

My theories:

Finn is not the light saber wielding Jedi you are looking for. His brandishing of Luke’s saber in the trailer is a Red Herring. He is Lando’s son or nephew (come on, this is Star Wars - EVERYONE is related). Growing up in Cloud City has given him plenty of time to find that light saber in the bowels of Cloud City (or acquire it from the Ugnaut who did find it). As the Empire fell and the economy tanked, Cloud City went out of business, and Finn had to become a scavenger to survive. He neither likes nor hates the First Order, and only picks a side when he meets the love of his life (Rey). He is basically this trilogy’s Han Solo.

Rey is the daughter of Leia and Han Solo. The Daughter of the Daughter of Skywalker is strong with the Force (or loaded with midichlorians, if you must), and she will become the Jedi badass of this trilogy.

Luke’s son is strong with the Force (or filled with midichlorians, blah, blah). He becomes seduced by the Dark Side, joins up with a group of Sith wannabees, the Knights of Ren, and chooses Kylo as his Knights of Ren name. He either kills his mother, or she dies early in the movie, or before the movie (you are watching Disney!). The Widower Jedi Master Luke must face his son in the climatic light saber duel, in an attempt to turn him back to the Bright Side. Kylo destroys his father, turning him into a Force Ghost for the rest of the trilogy “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.” Yes, JJ will be unable to resist a father/son showdown and for the 63 year old Jedi to utter the exact line the previous 63 year old Jedi uttered in 1977 at the time of his transformation into a Force Ghost.
