I'm sad that Ray missed out on the crazy Amazon deal for Othello. A bunch of us got it for around $14 and change by picking No Rush Shipping when Amazon was using that to price-match Walmart's store pickup discount.

I have the Japanese release, which I believe is the same transfer as the locked Region B from Studio Canal.

Welles made the best Shakespeare films. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know cinema.

I'd accept Throne In Blood being better than Welles' Macbeth and maybe Polanski's, but that's it. (I don't prefer Polanski's although it's certainly good).

None of those other middlebrow adaptations touch his Othello let alone Chimes. As for the more recent films, they aren't for me although I appreciate the attempts at modernisation.

I enjoyed that you came right out of the gate with the hottest of takes only to suddenly fall back on it in the very next sentence.

Hah. Well Macbeth IS understandably divisive, so I need to be flexible.

I'm not budging on the other two though!

I'm all in on these scrumptious period pieces (Barry Lyndon, Days of Heaven, Tess) being rescued by Criterion.

What are the chances of getting Dangerous Liaisons and Amadeus? Both with WB, who has shown a willingness to work with Criterion...

Please let it happen!

Amadeus is possible I'd say. Dangerous Liaisons? Doubt it.

What about Julie Taymor's Titus...

I liked it.

It's certainly a very stylised film.

It was a Twilight Time release, and given how long they've were hocking it at $10 before it just recently sold out, I doubt it's one anyone will want to give another go...

EDIT: Sorry, realized as I hit post you were probably saying "what about Titus as compared to other Shakespeare adaptations" not "what about Titus as a Criterion release." It's bed time...

I wasn't meaning that, but now that you mention it...

I bought Twilight Time's release in the previous sale, and, yeah, PQ ain't that hot.

Audio is a f'n beast, though.

Ooh I'd be all in for Amadeus if it included the original theatrical version (in addition to the director's cut). The latter is fine but the original is what I fell in love with, and it's not easy to find these days!

I had been vascillating concerning Fire Walk With Me. I finally decided, "Come on, Aaron. You love this movie. So what if you already own it? This looks beautiful." So, I pulled the trigger on that and in the process finally ordered Night and Fog. That's one that I will VERY rarely be re-visiting. But I don't care, it's very important.

But that's it. I'm done. NO MORE during this sale!

Final tally:

3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman
Rebecca
David Lynch: The Art Life
Vampyr
They Live By Night
Stalker
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Night and Fog

That's way more than I was planning on. I need to find a way to make it impossible for me to log onto the B&N site -- not sure I trust myself!

I ended up dropping Carlos, ordered a couple of days ago and it still hasn't shipped. Which I'm assuming is the weekend, but still...it's going to take a month even once they get around to it.

I hate living here sometimes.

I could figure out the basic machinations of the plot, but a lot of the nuance was a little bit lost on me. The dialogue comes rapid fire and, at times, it's like listening to a foreign language. But it's a great film.
I saw the film projected (Collector's print) several years ago and the audio was very poor. I've yet to see the Criterion but I'd imagine I will enable the subtitles. Chimes isn't the only Welles film with poor audio. I recall Macbeth had the same problem when I last saw it on video.

Justin Kurzel's Macbeth from a couple of years ago starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, which was otherwise brilliant, had poor audio -- but not due to any problems with the film itself. The idiot running the presentation at the theater had the audio SO LOUD that it was almost impossible to understand. Thankfully, I'm pretty familiar with the play, so it was no problem following it.

But ugh.

I remember going to see a film a few years ago and it'd been squashed from 2.2-2.4:1 down to 1.78:1 (I assume). Luckily they figured it out after a few minutes.

The weird thing about that experience with the Kurzel film is that it was an arthouse theater I've visited on numerous occasions and never had any problem whatsoever.

I'm wondering if it wasn't inherent in the mix (at least for the DCP), because I remember the audio being very loud at the screening I saw too.

Hmm. Well, if that's the case then someone screwed up.

Titus is my personal favorite Shakespeare adaptation (although I haven't seen that many), but I can see how it's not for everyone.
