Just two for me this month. As others have said, always good to get more Cary Grant. Plus, the Eclipse Bergman set is unexpected - and sounds great.

Few things in life annoy me more than wandering into the US section and hearing about all these classic movies showing in cinemas all the time.

It was supervised by Studiocanal, so it might never get a proper Criterion release... !

The Crime of Monsieur Lange is a delightful little movie, I really liked it a lot when I saw it a few years ago. For those who have the opportunity to see it on the big screen I recommend doing so.

I'd be happy with any of those, of course! I was just highlighting two that I feel desperately need better releases and probably some restoration work at this point. Overall, Criterion doesn't seem to focus on Asian filmmakers (especially outside of Japan) nearly enough, which I find disappointing. I'd love to see some Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Ming-liang Tsai movies released on Criterion as well.

Anyone else notice how all 4 of the announced titles were in the New Year’s drawing? I think they’re trying to be more secretive with titles now that so many are leaking early.

Even the Ingrid Bergman eclipse set may have been a NYD clue since we see a woman (or girl) holding the Swedish flag. I know it's partly for the Ingmar set, but I think it's for the Ingrid Bergman set too. They didn't really need a girl holding the flag to represent Ingmar 100

Add to that the fact that she appears to be sitting on a crescent moon, but on further reflection, that "moon" most probably is meant to represent an eclipse.

Yes, it seems that movie buffs don't have the same love for him that they had in the 90's. I believe the disappointment of Shanghai Triad broke his run in the mid 90s's and he hasn't been the same since. I like that film a lot, but it wasn't the film people wanted or expected then.

He is now seen as a commercial director, and the focus shifted away from him to other Asian directors in the new millennium.

Rightly or not, he is yesterday's man in a lot of people's minds.

Raise The Red Lantern was also poorly treated in the dvd era.

the DVD is atrocious. and the subtitles are worse. I'm sure that there's a chunk missing from them as I recall feeling that something was amok in the dialogue.

I thought the film was really good at first and towards the end, I'm not sure if I didn't like the conclusion or if it was the overwhelming feeling I described above.

Filmstruck showing No Country for Old Men on Criterion channel. What do you think the odds of that getting full Criterion release? I do not recall the original Bluray/DVD having much of anything in extras.

It was brought up a week or two ago. It's possible, but it could just be a streaming only title, like many others that are on Filmstruck. The Collector's Edition BD had a decent amount of extras:

"Working with the Coens" featurette (8:07)
"Diary of a Country Sheriff" featurette (6:44)

[Show spoiler]
I know, but it was discussed that their answer could be interpreted as it being on the Criterion channel, and not necessarily implying a BD release.

I'm still hoping that the skeleton is for something other than Dead Man. But you're probably right.

I still question how the person running the Filmstruck instagram page would know what was coming to Criterion. Maybe they jumped to the same conclusion as everyone else.
