Default Jurassic Park III

I just finished watching Jurassic Park III in 4K and I'm disappointed in the video quality or lack there of, unlike the original Jurassic Park (4K) which I would give 4.5/5 and The Lost World (4K) which I gave 4.2/5......Jurassic Park III's video quality in 4K is an equally intermittent mix of awesome and soft shots so I would only give the video a 3/5.

I'm off to watch Jurassic World which I'm hoping will be spectacular based on the fact that it is only a few years old and filmed with newer technology.

I also read that the original Jurassic Park received a new 4K scan but the author wasn't sure about two or three.

I'm very interested to read the Digital Bits review and I would think it should be out this week!

The dilophosaurus wires are gone on the 4K, but the other changes were just made to make the 3D conversion easier.

that brilliantly demonstrated why I really don't care for the 3D version.

From what I heard, the wire removal, light stand removal, netting removal, etc, were done for the 3D only. The 4K version contains all these errors.

I guess JP3 didn't receive a 4K scan, maybe 2K only. Or, they may have just used the extant 1080p Blu-ray master. It's not surprising given how shamefully Johnston's Jumanji was treated on 4K UHD. It was a the same crappy looking transfer as the DVD and Blu-ray. Pale lifeless colours and a super flat appearance.
I know it's lush and vibrant because I've seen how the 35mm looks; it looks like any photochemically timed blockbuster back in the '90s.

@cobravenomous, could you provide us some screengrabs from JP3 UHD, from your TV? It'd be great if you can.

There is also something wrong with the 4K. The color grading changes drastically from warm/yellow, to cool/pink the next. The colours have no consistency. How can this happen? -

The Jeep colours get a repaint from shot to shot?
It seems the former looks proper 35mm colour but the latter looks exactly like the 2000 pinkish DVD. It might as well have been pulled from that same source, for this shot.

Look at this production still of the original Jeep -

And look how close the colours of the 3D Blu-ray are -

These are taken from a phone camera taking a picture of a screen.

Even then, the colours should not vary that much, unless, the phone camera settings changed between shots. Scrap it, phone camera settings cannot create a separate grading change. That second shot is from a different master. Perhaps, the 2000-era master was used for that particular shot. Maybe cobravenomous can clarify.

Yeah, anyone can look at that and see it’s far from correctly color balanced. The jeep should be gray and red, not green. Yet another reason among many that production stills have nothing to do with how the film should look.

@Bates_Motel, that's how photochemical timing used to look back in the day, more yellow, green and orange for daylight. This also carried over to motion picture film. Which is why the 3D version was based on the timing of the film prints and properly set to warm. Of course they made it a bit too warm. But it was never supposed to be a pale cool colour like the DVD/2D BDs.

Here are a few screenshots I took from the Scandinavian release. All caps are converted to rec709 so colors and dynamic range should not be judged by these.

I had a question about the 4K discs. I don’t have a 4K TV but I do have a 4K player. I know I can use a 4K Disc and it will just be 1080p on my tv. My question is if the 4k Disc is a new scan will it change how it looks in 1080p vs the standard Blu-ray Disc that is apparently the same Disc from the past releases?

Of course it will, its not like it has a separate 1080p encode on the 4K disc that it will run instead you will get the same 4K version just output at 1080p instead.

If those are actual screen captures, then I'm not impressed. It has nothing on The Mummy 4K.

Do you have The Lost World: Jurassic Park as well? I am interested in that one, how that differences. Since Janusz shot this and with different Kodak stock.

All screen caps that I provided were from an iPhone 6.

No matter how many times people put up "these screenshots are not to be used as an accurate reflection of picture" it seems that folks do the same anyway.

Christ, that one fella was just taking pics of his screen with his phone, folks. Come on!
