Quigley Down Under

Directed by Simon Wincer
Starring Tom Selleck, Alan Rickman, Laura San Giacomo
119 minutes

This is a western set in Australia. Selleck plays a sharpshooter who can hit anything at 1,000 yards. Rickman tries to hire him on the pretext of shooting Coyotes, but really wants him to shoot aborigines. Selleck refuses and goes on the run with Giacomo (Vivian's best friend Kit in Pretty Woman) and Rickman tries to have them killed. You can work out the rest.

This is quite light-hearted with plenty of humor. Selleck's charisma carries him through the role. The story is predictable and nothing special. Cinematography is outstanding.

Overall 3.25/5

Huzzah, a movie that I haven't seen before but actually new stuff about it going in

I've been wanting to see this movie for years, but for some reason I never rented it.

Now that I've seen it I can say that I did enjoy it.

The story is about a group of fishermen that, after having a weak haul when returning to home, decide to go out very far out of the way of where they usually go. On their return trip they run into a hell of a storm.

I didn't care for most the scenes that took place on land. Once the crew left I was glad we didn't have to see that much of the people on land again; only for several short scenes. The biggest (and only for me) moment was when they were in the bar in the beginning and Diane Lane's character screams, "WHY DO I EVEN LOVE YOU?!" Horrible line complimented by a horrible delivery

The stuff on the boat though I really enjoyed. Especially once they got into the storm. The effects they used to simulate the storm were great...they even filmed some of the early portions of the storm on the edge of a hurricane.

There's no way for us to know what really happened after that radio went out but I thought what we got in the movie was pretty good with them
[Show spoiler]deciding to go back, thinking for a second there they were out of it...and then the storm kicking back up and capsizing the boat very shortly after that.
I also liked the decision to have George Clooney's character
[Show spoiler]stay with the boat and his crew while Wahlberg's character swam up to try and make it.

The acting in the film was solid all around the main cast. Nothing great but also nothing really bad (besides that one line from Diane Lane).

Clooney was "more solid" than the rest of the cast I thought and definitely did better than anyone else.

Not quite as good as I had hoped it would be, but still good stuff overall. Would be worth a rental I'd say.

Rating - 4/5
Thanks, I'm going to have to revisit this movie on BD one day. I had held off due to the mixed PQ reviews. How did you find the PQ?

What an original concept! I am a huge video game fan so I got everything that happened. I loved the intro to the film and I am still trying to figure out which game that opening music is from?

Michael Cera did a really good job and this is his best performance as like I said I never cared for the guy. Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Ellen Wong (Both cuties) did very well also. I just loved the overall atmosphere of the film and the editing was great. The effects were tremendous and both cameos from Chris Evans and especially Brandon Routh were refreshing. On a sidenote Routh should be Superman again! He just has it! I am also a little more confident in Evans playing Captain America as well.

Back to the film, this clearly took me by surprise and the homage it paid to video games (arcade) in general was excellent. I was impressed by Michael and even his fighting scenes were awesome and it looked like he did most of his stunts although I am not sure of how much due to technology. All in all I have to give it up to Foggy as this was a fun ride and a refreshing film. One down side was I thought the PQ couldve been better. Definite recommendation for all and especially u video game junkys!!!!! Got Em!!

I didn't want to see this either when it came out in the theater, but all of the praise from Blu-ray reviews and people here (like Foggy) were enough for me to take a big gamble and blind buy it. I am really glad I did because I loved it. It's pretty much like nothing I've ever seen before.

i didn't enjoy the movie as much as you, but i agree on a few parts you mentioned:

- Chris Evans and Brandon Routh: they were the best characters in the movie. i loved how dry and sarcastic Routh's delivery of lines was
- Mary Elizabeth Winstead is attractive, but not a whole lot in Scott Pilgrim. i think it's just the hair style, but they really didn't do her any favors here lol

You guys should appreciate this video (and I'm sure some of you will say, "How come [insert movie] isn't in there?" I did a couple times (Lord of the Rings and Toy Story...actually any animated movie besides Iron Giant... are missing for example).

Hidden (Cache)

Directed by Michael Haneke
Starring Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche
118 minutes
French language

It's early, but this is easily the best film I have watched this year.

Blu-ray.com synopsis:

Georges, a television talk show host, and his wife Anne, are living the perfect life of modern comfort and security. One day, their idyll is disrupted in the form of a mysterious videotape that appears on their doorstep. On it they are being filmed by a hidden camera from across the street with no clues as to who shot it, or why. As more tapes arrive containing images that are disturbingly intimate and increasingly personal, Georges launches into an investigation of his own as to who is behind this. As he does so, secrets from his past are revealed, and the walls of security he and Anne have built around themselves begin to crumble.

That sounds like Lost Highway to me (in my Top 20), but this film is much easier to follow. The acting is strong and the mystery is perfectly paced, slowly unfolding throughout. I'm not going to talk about specific elements, but I will say that the film ends abruptly. This is one of those stories that you won't believe is over. If it works for you, it's the kind of thing you will talk about, think about, research, develop theories about and watch multiple times.

It feels like Revanche, but the resolution is nowhere near as conclusive.

The UK import is region free, although the special features are audio only unless you have a Region B player. Currently £7.99. Martin Scorsese is about to adapt an English version with DiCaprio in the lead, but I doubt it will be better than this version.

PQ looked great 4.5/5
AQ did all it needed to do in a story driven by dialogue
Overall 4.5/5 with the potential to increase to 5/5 with further viewings

I wrote a ten page essay on this film about five years ago but unfortunately lost it when my old computer crashed during a severe Buffalo storm. There are several explanations of the film on the web that are incredibly helpful and truly show the depth of the film.

The Lives of Others (blu)

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

I've reviewed this film at least twice before, so I won't again. As many of you know, it's my second favorite film behind The Fountain. It is, quite simply, the best film of the 2000s.

Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time - 2010

This movie doesn't deserve my time of a proper review.

Quite honestly, this was a pretty bad movie.

Horrible script, laughable acting, bad directing, cheesy looking sets, uneven flow to the story (if there even was a real story), and oh boy, an ugly wig on jake's head.

You really shouldn't waste 2 hours of your life to see this movie.

If you really want to spend time with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, play the video game... it's MUCH better.

Overall 4.0/10

haha, seriously?? Set the bar?? There's no way that this movie can set the bar for what video game movies should be. What qualities did it have? Please, I'd like to hear your opinions.

Does anyone else agree with me?

Well I actually liked the story and I fell for the gorgeous princess. I liked the action and the politics and the duplicities and such. To me, it was the best video game movie I've ever seen. I'd go 4.5/5 for the movie and 5/5 for the transfer.

To me the story was hard to follow at times and was unevenly paced. The princess was nothing great at all, in my eyes, not to mention a mediocre actor. The action was the "been there, seen that" type, and the choreography was a joke to me. Jake Gyllenhaal did not fit this role, nor did Sir Ben Kingsley as
[Show spoiler]the bad guy.
And beyond that, there were so many typical Hollywood blockbuster action movie cliches in Prince of Persia, I lost count. Unfortunately, there has never been a good video game based movie, in my opinion. I would put the Resident Evil franchise slightly above Prince of Persia.

Hidden is certainly thought provoking. The closing shot in itself is interesting and leads to at least one theory.
