It has everything to do with how it was shot.

It was from the POV of Stannis, very intentionally done to highlight that this was her triumph and the first really shady thing he did that sent him off on his destructive arc (murdering his brother with magic) was coming full circle.

Yes, cutting just before someone dies is film school 101. It's done to create doubt in the viewers mind and give them the belief that the person may or may not be alive.

And no, I don't want to make a bet. I have no issue with him being dead, if he is.

I still disagree that it did it like that. We watched this poor deluded fool get flogged and keep going for five seasons. He was no small fry. If Ayra got her bloody satisfaction in drawn out detail, I would have liked to have seen Briennes reaction after killing Stannis. Not gratuitous for me.
