I believe that Mulholland Dr. is one of those films that (at least to most viewers) makes nearly zero sense upon a first watch. But eventually it all comes together and makes perfect sense. It just takes a few, at least, viewings.

Some reading about it doesn't hurt, either. And there's a LOT of stuff all over the 'net about that film. Not surprisingly.

It was so surreal. I loved the movie and I enjoyed Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring performances (loved their erotic scene together, and I'm neither a woman and nor do have I interest in the opposite sex) but the last bit of the movie is "WTF, where the hell did that come from?!".

I'm going to have to re-watch it. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me is still my favorite David Lynch film but this one comes a close second.
That's how I felt when I first watched it and I was a Lynch fan then and there. Also HIGH FIVE more FWWM love up in here!! That's easily his other masterpiece. Criminally underrated.

Just....holy sh*t. So much concentrated greatness. Find me a month that would knock that down to 3rd.
June 2010, October 2014, and February 2015 were all quite impressive as well.

I just watched The Story Of Temple Drake last night on TCM in an absolutely stunning and luminous new HD transfer. It has never been released on home video in the US, and I was thinking that Criterion is probably this film’s only hope for a BD release. To my knowledge it’s the only pre-1949 Paramount film not owned by Universal or Paramount; the rights were bought by Fox for a remake. I don’t see Fox ever releasing it themselves, especially now that Disney will be in charge.

Those are great months, especially Oct 2014. I haven't gone through their entire BD release calendar, but I'd say Feb 2011 is another great one.

Wow. Two major P&Ps in one month. Makes up for a small slate for sure. It's rare to get two individual titles/releases by the same director, it seems. I love Blue is the Warmest Color, so I'd like to check out that Kechiche film.

Some of my favorite months ever: November 2012: Pasolini's "Trilogy of Life", "Heaven's Gate", Godard's "Weekend", and Kurosawa's "Rashomon".

November 2016: "Lone Wolf and Cub" set, "One Eyed Jacks", Kurosawa's "Dreams", "Punch Drunk Love".

November 2009: Yielded a DVD Kurosawa box set that I got, that's worth a small fortune, now.

This coming September gives us: "Andrei Rublev",
"The Tree of Life", "A Raisin in the Sun", and "Scenes from a Marriage".

The Bergman set takes the grand prize, though....

As of last Friday I am done cycling through the Zatoichi set for a 2nd time. I feel comfortable enough to name a top 5...
  1. Zatoichi's Revenge
  2. Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo
  3. Zatoichi in Desolation
  4. Zatoichi Goes To The Fire Festival
  5. Zatoichi's Conspiracy

Fantastic stuff. So entertaining.

I like all of those, but my favorite is Zatoichi Challenged (#17). Zatoichi's Revenge is probably my second favorite.

On Sunday night, my wife and I watched Cocteau's Orpheus (1950) and we both really loved it. This was my first experience with Cocteau and I loved the mood he built with this film and the effects were really impressive. We are both really interested in Greek mythology and I was very impressed with how they adapted the story to contemporary Paris.

How does this film compare to the other two films in the Orphic trilogy? Any recommendations for films similar to this one?

I love movies that really make you think, not only while you're watching it, but long after the credits have rolled. I think my mind was chewing on Mulholland Drive for a good week after first seeing it. Scenes would just randomly pop into my head, and I knew that my mind was trying to sort it all out.
Mulholland Drive is a masterpiece; I saw it twice in the theater back in the day, and several times since then. Amazing & bizarre film.

I haven't read all the posts here & I know this is an older film - however, I believe the consensus here is that
[Show spoiler]the ending scenes (with the Naomi Watts character looking burned out & in the run down apartment, and the brunette character the successful singer) are the reality, and everything that came before that was a dream.

Yep..debated putting that one of my list. Definitely one of the high points of the series.

Intend to give the Lone Wolf and Cub series another watch through soon. Still need to buy the Lady Snowblood set. Something always gets in the way.

I want to get the Lone Wolf and Cub series. I just got done watching The Samurai Trilogy and loved that. I plan on getting the Zatoichi set in October. The first Lady Snowblood is superb, but the second one didn't do much for me.

I revisited Three Outlaw Samurai the other night and damn, what a blast that movie is.

I still wish they'd re-release that early DVD Samurai boxset that contained Rebel Samurai, Sword of the Beast, Samurai Spy and Kill! on Blu-ray.

Haven't bothered with Lone Wolf and Cub and Zatoichi, mainly because I don't understand what they are; are they a series of short films, or feature-length movies?

I'm not a fan of Lone Wolf and Cub. it's too cold. It doesn't have the humor, kindness, and compassion that is so prevalent in the Zatoichi films.

I bought the Lady Snowblood films blind and I was disappointed.

I very much enjoy Japanese martial art films. I think Seven Samurai is the greatest movie ever made. And the Samurai Trilogy is one of my favorites. I'll watch all three in one evening. But Lone Wolf and Cub, as well as Lady Snowblood, didn't do it for me.

There Outlaw Samurai is great, as is Kuroneko, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and The Hidden Fortress. George Lucas concedes that Star Wars was heavily influenced by The Hidden Fortress.
