I hope Days of Being Wild is in there, too. Normally I prefer individual editions, but if a box set is the only way to get the 4K resto of In the Mood for Love on Blu, then I'll take that. (and lose that lovely artwork)

16mm can be scanned too, though we're dealing with much less potentially major upgrades there, in terms of detail. It all depends on the source. All restorations require hours of cleanup, but can still look magnificent. Take The Kid, Criterion's presentation of it on Blu-ray is one of the finest for a 1920s film, much of it looks like it was shot yesterday. The question is, how would HDR affect a black and white film, and would enough people buy it. Also, many of the more popular movies in the Collection would likely be released on 4K by the studios themselves. Those are far greater roadblocks for Criterion to consider, along with the previously mentioned region coding issue. But as far as older color movies not looking better on the UHD format: nonsense. Even for films that had to be restored from less than ideal materials, HDR could do wonders, and is the main selling point of the format. 2001: A Space Odyssey has been restored from a rough negative and should look stunning, and that's receiving a 4K UHD release.

I've already replaced my VHS with DVD's. Now I've pretty much replaced all my DVD's with Bluray's. I will not be replacing those with UHD. That being said when a UHD/Bluray combo pack is released I will buy it even though I've yet to buy a 4K TV. The only Bluray's I'll replace with UHD will be my very favorite movies.

That being said let me know when a Criterion UHD of Ran is released. That is if they can wrestle the rights from the anti-region A Studiocanal cabal.

Anti-region A? StudioCanal's release of Ran came out in the US though...

I'm glad I wasn't born earlier than I was. I never had the chance to accumulate a massive VHS collection, and no LaserDiscs. Did get a lot of DVDs, but my Blu-ray collection has surpassed that. I can't help but upgrade, since movies are visual and I want the best, since I enjoy any movie more when it looks its best. So I'm taking some solace in the fact that (hopefully) not every movie I own will be released on 4K UHD. I think that's a pretty safe assumption, since subsequent formats are becoming more niche and less is released on them than the previous. There are still plenty of DVD-only and VHS-only movies out there. Even then, I'm gonna try to be more selective with UHD.

I really do hope Criterion can work out a deal to license from StudioCanal again. No idea why it fell apart years ago. Is that report of a representative visiting their office substantiated or a rumor?

Not the remaster. Nor The Third Man's. Last Year at Marienbad will probably be the same.

Ordinary People (1980)

Or I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) (paired with the 1941 version, or include it as an extra).

It still baffles me that Roman Holiday hasn't been released yet on blu-ray. I went to a fathom events screening of it a few years ago. It's just a great film.

I'd also love to see Remember the Night get a release. It's an incredibly enjoyable under-the-radar holiday film. TCM did a small blu-ray release a while back but that is long out of print. And while I'm rambling, other holiday films I'd love to have on blu-ray include The Shop Around the Corner, which seems like it would be a great Criterion candidate, and It Happened on Fifth Avenue. The past couple of years I've been hoping one of these would make it into the December releases.

Over 8 years ago. StudioCanal has pretty much abandoned their N.A. efforts, despite holding the rights for several great films that have had new restorations and/or releases from them overseas. The only thing they've done in the past few years that I can recall is The Man Who Fell From Earth in January 2017.

I recently re-watched Louis Malle's Black Moon (1975) on the Blu Criterion Disk. Bizarre film, that I had only seen once before. The film was set in a dystopian (not post apocalyptic) setting in which there was a war between genders. Very surrealistic...and, it's unclear what is real & what is imagined/fantasy. The storyline involves a young woman escaping from a city?! into the countryside, and ends up at an isolated farmhouse, where she encounters a twin?! brother/sister, as well as an old, sick, bedridden woman; animals that talked; feral children who may - or may not - be there; and other strange elements. It's one of the strangest films I've seen, and I've seen many.

The strange vibe/tone of the film remind me slightly of Zardoz, the sci-fi cult classic - but not the storyline.

Seconded on Shop Around the Corner. I have the old DVD that went OOP a long time ago which I love to upgrade from and its essential Christmas viewing for me.

I wish they move on from Lionsgate or least license out classic films from their library out to other companies since numerous films have got brand new restorations.

I was hoping that the Juliette Hochart visit would amount to something. Maybe it still will. It seems odd for the International Home Entertainment and TV Sales person to visit the Criterion offices just for the heck of it.

Yeah, if they release it and go with Sue Lyon for the cover, it will have my full endorsement.
