Very true.

Shredding is ok with me as long as there is some kind of balance from the band.
A band like Firewind, for example. They know when to turn it on/off. Unlike Dragonforce where every song is the same BPM. With the same Nintendo solos..

Dimebag could rip it up or groove out. He got it. It is not always about how fast you play.

Constant shredding is annoying. And very boring to watch in person.

Exactly!! Dimebag is a terrific example of a metal guitarist who knew the importance of playing with feel! It's the difference between someone who actually has something to "say" with their guitar as opposed to someone who just wants to show off.

Oh believe me, I could've made my list longer. You're right, those two are right up there! My mistake!! I also forgot to mention Randy Rhoads, Tony Iommi, and Richie Blackmore.

The three I mentioned before are in the same ilk as Dimebag....Symphony X, Malmsteen and Impellitteri do the same, just not as often.

Michael Romeo, Malmsteen, and Impellitteri are too "neo classical" for me. Less feeling, more technical wizardry. I would even put John Petrucci in this category.

Ya back in the day I did. They were ok. Haven't heard them in years. The singer died from an anuerism, iirc.

Ray Gillen died from AIDS. He left us way too early.

My biggest gripes with Zak is that he is predictable and overuses that pinched harmonic sound effect in his playing. I actually think he's a little overrated.

Oh..got my info screwed up.

As far as Zakk Wylde goes...good but predictable, BLS is ok. Seen them a few times. Seen Zakk with Ozzy in 88 (with Anthrax) and the No More Tours Tour in 92(with Slaughter and Faster *****cat...just awful)... lol. Another time at an Ozzfest.

The only Zakk era Ozzy album I really like was the first, No Rest for the Wicked.

edit Umm why cant I type the word Faster *****cat? Its the name of a lame glam band lol

Being a newcomer in Metal Music (Go ahead), since I became interested in it with Rock Band and Strong Bad (Trogdor anyone?), what would be good to start out with (No punk, Emo or Nu-Metal, I don't like that kind), but I did enjoy that song from Mastodon, colony of Birchman and Megadeth, Peace sells for example, although I'm a big fan of Classical and Classic Rock.

I would say a good starting point would be possibly Firewind's Alliegance or Forged By Fire. Masterplan's self titled debut or Aeronautics would be excellent as well. If you want heavy, fast and can stand or like high pitched vocals try Mercyful Fate's 9 as a starter there. For straight thrash try Iced Earth's Burnt Offerings or Alive In Athens along with Overkill's Killbox Xlll or The Years Of Decay. For death metal, I'd say Death's Sound of Perseverance is a solid start as well.

Start with the "godfathers" of metal. Look into Black Sabbath (mainly the Ozzy and Dio eras), Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. Those are 3 of the best! Also check out all of Metallica's early catalogue. Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ....And Justice For All. Also check out Iced Earth! Especially albums like Burnt Offerings, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Dark Saga.

These will give you a great foundation to start with.

If you're a fan of classical, check out Symphony X. They are a kick ass neo-classical/progressive metal band.

I would also recommend Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss and Carcass - Heartwork. 2 of my favorite metal albums and still listened to often.
