JJ Abrams excessive use of lens flare and digitally added "camera sludge" (according to the extra features that is the official terminology) show up far to well on the blu-ray to the point where they are distracting. And some of the artifically added artifacts actually end up looking like compression artifacts at times.

During the scene where Amanda is fixing Spocks collar prior to him going before the elders for his admission to the science acadamy, there is what look to be a compression artifact in the form of a blue and red line that pops up for less than one second. It just jumps out and looks like a print problem. Reviewing the paused footage of the apparent artifact it has the characteristics of an optical light effect, in other words it was a deliberate addition but it is less than a second so looks like a print error.

Small examples like this show up from time to time and ruin what would have been a magnificent print to my eyes. The fault is entirely on JJ and his artistic choices. I love the addition of things that add to realism, but this has gone to far and ruined what I hoped would be a great experience. It doesn't look real, it looks artificial. It just went to far.

Issues with the picture aside, I can't fault the audio. It is top notch. And the extra features are fantastic. There's probably around 3 hours worth and the documentaries (complete with branching featurettes) are fascinating.

I loved this film. It would have been the perfect blu-ray for me if it were for how annoying the deliberate artifacts are.
May I ask what size screen you viewed it on?

The damn lense flare eventually got to me on my 3rd viewing of Star Trek: The I-MAX Experience (2 during the original run, the 3rd during the quick re-release). The first time I noticed it, but the 2nd and 3rd times it absolutely drove me INSANE. I'm hoping it won't be as headache-inducing on a 52" screen (compared to the 70' I-MAX screen).

And yes, I loved it enough to warrant 3 I-MAX trips, despite the lense flare. I thought it was exactly what I wished for in the 3 Star Wars prequels that Lucas utterly failed to deliver.

Hi, I'm watching on a 52" screen. The first time I saw the film it didn't get to me that much (to caught up in the spectacle). The second time I thought that it was just silly. Now it is just plain annoying.

There's heaps on it in the extra features showing just how far they went out of their way to ensure the film was completely (over) saturated with it and how it "adds to the realism". Sorry JJ, but it adds to the realism to a point, a point you went way way past.

For once I was wishing for a "DNR" scrubbed version (yes I know it's not DNR but you get the picture).

A fantastic movie visually ruined and I personally feel that even if 100% faithfull to the source, it does not deserve a 5/5. There are plenty of older films that are 100% faithful to the source but because the source isn't perfect they get marked down. Happens all the time. Just because this is a "new" film doesn't change the fact it looks less than other releases.

You took 3 trips yet you don't know how it is properly spelled. Which is IMAX.

It's in a couple of the early doc's. The ILM guys talk about how they added "gunk" to the effects. There's a whole montage of the film crew shining spotlights into the camera's throughout various sequences during filming.

What's funny is they go on about how they did this special "unique" effect to make the panels on the enterprise look different......the way all the panels did in the original movies

But there is alot of great stuff in the docos. They were quite enjoyable.

I think there talking about the digitally aided flares for the completely cgi shots. The reason this mimicks what happened in the original films is they used models, and the camera could get a flare of the lights on those models. This is a reference blu, if you don't like the style of shotting, that is fine, but this is as good as this film will ever look on blu.

I gotta say this Blu-ray looks better then the 35mm prints we were playing in VMAX on George St. I actually see more detail and noticed more thing on the Blu-ray then I did on any of our screens.

I watched it on my 110" screen and I can tell you the lens flares are extremely distracting. Definitely something the movie could have done without.

What I don't understand is how Aasia already released Star Trek on October 30, 2009 in all the major retail stores like HMV. I bought a copy and the quality is awesome.

I have just watched the first half of the movie and wanted to come to tell my feelings about the release. Cant watch the whole movie until tomorrow as i dont want to disturb my neighbors (it is getting late in europe).

I own 43 blu-ray movies at the moment and most of them represent the best of blu-ray what goes for AQ and PQ so im rather demanding especially with new blu-ray releases.

So the PQ in Star Trek is one of the best i have ever seen. The movie is filled with amazing effect which really come to life in blu-ray. Colors are vivid and the "Mass Effect like" lighting effects look especially good. Still the colors are not overly saturated (Transformers) and i think that skin tones were very good and natural. Also the amount of detail is amazing. Im not a big fan of film noise but there is just the right amount of it. All the little sparkles of light, colorful computer monitors on the ships and huge landescapes looks very sharp and nice. Also close shots of faces look very good as there are a lot of skin detail to bee seen. So the only thing that would have been better is if the whole movie would have been made in IMAX. I would say that the picture quality is atleast as good as in Transformers or Watchmen if not even better. It is not the Dark Knight IMAX regarding to image detail/sharpens but i thing it is the next best thing. But what really makes Star Trek stand out from all other BD movies and send it lightyears ahead is the incredible usage of lighting and the amount of different kind of effects. They really do make the movie to come alive and feel fresh and also gives a futuristic feel to it. I think that this is the most awesome looking BD movie to this day and this would definately be the blu-ray to show of my system.

The only small complain is about the camera focus not being always right. The movie looks very good for the most part but when people are talking and the camera zooms to a face the focus is just not right and the face looks blurry. Though the movie plays a lot with camera focus and the effect looks like it is made on purpose so i didnt see it as a fault. It is just something that catched my eye as the movie is so sharp otherwise. The effect can bee seen in Apple HD trailer 3 at 00:00:20.

And then there is the AQ. I really waited to hear what the new Star Trek would sound like and as a big summer blockbuster i waited it to just explode around me with constant bass from the begining to the end (again like Transformers). I was really surprised as this was not the case. Dont get me wrong i do think this is yet again on of the best sounding BD movies there is.

So lets start from the dialog which is very clear and can be easily heard even though there are a lot of action going on. Surrounds are constantly in use but not just for effects. They really create amazing ambiens and atmosphere even during the quietest moments and it feels as you are constantly in the movie. Being in the middle of a huge spaceship firefight, walking in to a bar or standing on the bridge of USS Enterprise sounds exactly like it should. It is the amount of variety that really makes it shine. Front speakers sounded also amazing playing the orchestral score and other effect.

So what really surprised me was the sound design. It is not constant explosion and bass but there are also a lot of quieter moments. Being used to these AD/HD soundtracks in action movies it was a very nice change. Less seems to really be more as now it is possible to really hear all different kind of cool effect with their small nuances. Hearing a closing ion storm in deep space did put a big smile on my face. The dynamics are just perfect. And when the first torpedos are fired the low bass put even bigger smile on my face as it shooked my sofa. Still the effects are never overpowering. But still this is not the LOUDEST track out there but i think it is the most sophisticated and best sounding for an action movie(might sound dull but crank up the volume and you understand what i mean).

There was my first feelings about the movie. Remember that i have only seen a half of the movie but i think it did give a good picture what the rest of the movie is like. So in few words, if you are going to buy only one blu-ray movie then Star Trek it is. There is just no other movie that comes even close to what Star Trek visually looks like, it is also one of the sharpest and best looking video transfers and sound just incredible.

And for the movie itself (first half) it is at least a very strong 9 when it comes to action scifi movies. Definately one of the best movies of this year.
