Sorry if this is a daft question, but who actually owns the rights to The Terminator (1984) in the UK? I mean, Optimum have the rights to Terminator 2, and Fox have Terminator Salvation, but what about the first one? MGM is now back up and running and releasing older films (any chance of the Bounty?) but it's a slow trickle. T1 needs a serious special edition with all-new Cameron approved transfer.

Yes, because your one purchase of an American release will bring the entire UK blu ray market crumbling down.

I don't see what the problem is, you're moaning it's not on Blu you have a region free option. Buy it whilst you wait for the UK release then sell the region free release on...

Exactly.
When there is NOTHING new to release its not the end of the world if there is no UK release. If there was no US release or it was region locked or cost £50 then yes there would be a reason to moan about no UK release.

I never said it would

The problem is films such as The Terminator should have been released years ago on Blu-ray around the time it came out in the US.
It then finally looked like we were getting it here in May, but now for some bizarre reason Fox have just decided to delay it.

I am also p*ssed off that they've cancelled Volcano which was coming out on the same day.

As I said above films like this one should've gotten a Blu-ray release years ago in the UK, so im just dissapointed as it was coming out in May, and having it pre-ordered I was quite looking forward to it.

I really don't understand why some people on this forum have such a problem with some not wanting to just import films.
Quite frankly, you shouldn't have to for releases such as this especially, and as my Blu-ray collection of currently 290+ films all of them are UK releases apart from 1.
I simply don't want to import, I much prefer the UK's Blu-ray cases to those flimsy cheap ones in the US, and am usually quite patient and don't mind waiting for a UK release to come.
The reason im particularly fedup about this one is because it was coming in May, and now it looks like its not.

I agree. Not releasing films in the UK gives the average consumer who may be big film fans but not really aware of the idiosyncrasies of Blu-ray releases a bad message. When you upgrade to Blu you want new films with your old favourites, cancelling back catalogue titles again and again isn't a positive sign as the state of the format and it will leave people sitting firmly on the fence.

I don't know many people who import Blu-rays apart from members here and while Amazon make the process quite straightforward it may be a step to far for some people to commit to a new format.

The Terminator is a prestige title for many film fans and cancelling what may have been a straight port of the US version shows underlining signs that studios don't give a toss about UK costumers. Especially when all they have to do with certain titles is create new disc art and BD cover....

You can get Dante's Peak though, which has Linda Hamilton in it, who was in Terminator...

See, all's well that ends well!

I care more about Volcano than I do about The Terminator.

I can see both sides of the import argument, but agree with Simba that not releasing titles, particulary very popular catalogue titles in the UK stinks and those who by default say, 'just import' are in a way defending this studio laziness and general disregard for what is a fairly large market.

The point that KS is trying to make is that we shouldn't have to import! But moreover why should we have to wait? I don't import and I don't want to because I shouldn't have to!

I replied to Fox repeating the question of "why have The Terminator, Volcano, The Beach and Kiss of Death been cancelled?" and this is their response.

Thank you for your email.

Scheduled releases are sometimes pushed back or delayed due to other external / internal factors witin the business. I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed in our re-scheduling of the below titles. However, as advised, if you visit our websites www.fox.co.uk / www.fox.com, you will be kept up-to-date on our latest releases.

Kind regards,
Patrick

What re-scheduling? There is no new release date it's just been pulled from schedule completely?
Unless you take any notice of Amazon's strange 2013 date.

I also hate how they always tell me to visit their website, considering nothing is ever really on their about new upcoming releases, and generally titles only get added after they've been released.

Possibly not permanently, as Fox have a history of being a nightmare for UK catalogue titles. I remember it took them over a year to correct the 3min title sequence of Bertolucci's 1900 after the initial release was pulled from shops within days.

I'm guessing by the look of the cover art on the upcoming release, that this will indeed be just a vanilla release. Possibly having a slightly different encode, but i'd put money on that it will be a directo port of the US version.
Saying that, some catalogue titles in the UK, although vanilla in nature, have had superior technical specs to their US counterparts.
I'm sure that were this new release to be bursting with extras that there would be some mention of it on the cover "special edition" "collectors edition" or such like...
Regarding the sound on the US disc. Yes the effects have been dicked about with and i always get annoyed when the "45 longslide with laser sight" sounds like a pea shooter rather than Dirty Harrys magnum, but on the whole, when played through a decent home theatre system, the LPCM does offer a substantial amount of bang for buck. I would have liked the original mono track to be included, but being such a huge fan of this movie, i've had the US disc for years now, and have enjoyed many viewings of it.
I found it to be a pretty good upgrade over the old DVD on the whole. Am i completely happy with it? No. But its the best there is for now. Its available for peanuts online, and region free, so why not induldge?
Something better will be along in the future to cheer us all up, but i don't think this new UK release will be it. Maybe i'm wrong (hope so), but don't hold out too many hopes...

I can't believe this has been pulled from the schedule!! I have been waiting for a proper UK blu ray release for years now just to be repeatedly let down by MGM!! I am so disappointed this film should have been out years ago in the UK. MGM has to get there heads out of there a**es and release this film! Also where the heck is Red Dawn I thought that got announced years ago but still no release!

When this is released, there are a couple of things I hope they fix.

1. When the Terminator is shooting through the police station, you can clearly see the shotgun being used yet it's the automatic weapon that's heard.

2. In the factory at the end, the camera is on Kyle and Sarah and the Terminator's POV sound is heard but the picture is normal as though the producers forgot.

Had the UK release preordered but decided awhile back that I'd like to see the film again sooner rather than later so I added it to my last amazon US order. While it would be nice to see a UK release at the end of the day importing it, is an easy and pain free option.
