Excellent news on the transfer. Looks like a strong release. Shame they couldn't get the previous UK DVD commentary and the deleted scenes and gag reel from that release, I always enjoyed those.

Haven't seen Dog Soldiers yet, so I take it Scream Factory's blu-ray will be the best way to watch it the first time with the new HD transfer it's receiving.

NEW 2K Scan HD Transfer Supervised And Approved By Director Neil Marshall
Then we'll run it through our cheap ass encoder and completely ruin it so there was no point re-scanning it in the first place.

Not expecting miracles as this film will probably always look a little rough, but this is the best outcome we could have hoped for.

We'll see, with the director/creator there I think they'll try to do a better job.

Well, if RAH over on HTF is to be trusted, sounds like Universal got a whole new scanning department..."top to bottom"...as the man said.
Maybe, going forward, this could be good for future SF releases as well?

Even with their lousy encoding, there's no way it could be worse than the original Blu. That thing was barely HD. This will be a total upgrade.

Love Dog Soldiers, and looking forward to seeing what the disc looks like. But Super 16mm combined with Shout's problematic encoding doesn't bode well, even WITH a new scan. And a 2K scan... based on what source? Hopefully its some sort of 16mm source and not a 35mm blowup. Is it a print that's several times removed form the negative? All of that affects the image, new 2K scan or not. I assume if it was the neg or even IP, they'd state it as such, so that part's not looking very good, either.

But I'm going on record now to say that, while it will most likely look better than the previous release, I'm not counting on looking that much better (given the intangibles above).

I'm not posting this in the custom cover thread because, a) it isn't a cover yet, and b) I figure all the "Dog Soldiers" are checking this thread.

I know Shout! commissioned new art and yada yada yada, but I kinda like this. Soliciting opinions...

[Show spoiler]
It's a neat composition, but It looks a little generic in my opinion (like the blank dog tags for instance). It also has a cheesy 80 action vibe to it, which I dont think fits that well for the movie. If you're down for tweaking that, I'd go for something darker for the background, maybe making the moon less orange, and perhaps red for the lettering, and again maybe adding details to the dog tags.

edit: Made a really rough mock-up of what I said above. I think the darker tones work better for the movie.

I loved The Descent, but was completely underwhelmed with Dog Soldiers, but watching it on the crappy old DVD probably didn't help matters. It's been years so I don't remember it at all, so I think I'll revisit it and give it another shot on Scream's release.
