Picked this up with X-mas money today. The only negative was the slip getting ruined when trying to remove the stickers (even though I was careful). Same thing as happened with my Wolverine slip. So I exchanged it for another copy and I'll just keep the stickers on there.
Can't wait to revisit this. ![]() |

Is there any difference between a 3d movie converted to 2d (using your tv) and a movie which is already in 3d? Eg if i watched the 3d blu ray of avatar and i wanted to watch 2n instead, i press a button on the tv which converts it to 2d, but there is also a 2d only version, is there any difference between those two?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a truly great film. I've just finished watching it, and I couldn't be more impressed. A masterpiece of sci-fi storytelling brilliantly realized. Intellectually it towers over most monster films.
Bring on the sequel. |

I agree but really hope that the sequel isn't as crushingly boring in its use of 3D. I was really disappointed at how much of the film takes place behind the screen and how little pop-out there is -unforgivable when the film was shot natively in 3D and most of it is set in a forest.

I knew this was going to come up. Yes, Fox plays it safe with the 3-D. Almost cowardly 3-D. But at least it's good quality 3-D. I doubt they'll take a risk with the next one. I hope they maintain the literate writing and adept filmmaking in any case.

I hope they change the 3D for the next one. The movie was pretty enjoyable, but I was completely mystified by their tiny interaxial choices. Frankly, I'd rather watch it flat. Maybe they can find a new cinematographer who knows 3D. If not, just convert the next one.

Upon checking IMDB, I learned that Michael Seresin did the cinematography for this movie, which I did find quite striking in 2D. He is also DoP on the upcoming Jungle Book Origins movie. It will be interesting to see if Jungle Book gets stronger, rounder 3D than Apes did.
Edit - NVM, there are two upcoming Jungle Books and he is doing the Warner Bros one slated for 2017, and not the primarily CGI Disney one, so it will be a longer wait to compare, if it even is a native 3D production. Last edited by BleedOrange11; 09-27-2015 at 07:53 AM. |

I picked this up recently and was excited to revisit it, having only seen the 2D version in theaters back in 2014. I was disappointed to find that while the story is still well told, the CGI for the apes has not aged well.
I know the word on the street is that this was a native 3D production, but aside from the opening prologue showing the spread of simian flu, the film looks post-converted. The apes look flat, with only the mildest of separation between them. The surrounding forest environments also look post-converted, with leaves that look like shards of jagged glass rather than delicate foliage. I watched Ghost in the Shell right after this, which has a horribly watered-down story, but far rounder 3D. |

Michael Seresin DOP:
“Matt wanted a 2D aesthetic transferred to 3D,” says Seresin. “We decided on a shallow 3D for most scenes, but we had a scale from zero to five as a means of asking for more or less stereo. Joe would sit behind me and dial that in, shot to shot. We turned up the 3D with more depth to emphasise the battle scenes and, to accentuate that further, we kept the rest of the show subtle and low-key.” |

I think this is easily the best of the recent Apes trilogy. The first one lacks 3D so that's a big strike against it and the third one is just soooo depressing but i think this one is terrific. It's a shame that the 3D is as reserved as it is but i still think it looks great.

Yeah 3 is a really well made movie but it's just 2 and a half hours of animals suffering pretty much. I find it a real slog to get through but I really like 2. I'll also add for a movie with War in the title, there is very little war, battle or action in general.

I rewatched this at the weekend, excellent movie, 4.5/5 for the movie IMO, on of the best big budget blockbusters of the 2010's i think.
I've always enjoyed the 3D, despite it being fairly reserved but personally i've never had any issues with it. I can always see the layers and the separation and the movie has so many great shots. It looks like a live action Last of Us in terms of the production design. The VFX work is phenomenal and holds up great, i can't get over convincing most of the shots are and how consistent it all is. |

Quick Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Blu Ray 3D Review:
100" 3D Project, no issues. Even with great brightness contrast, this movie offers a mostly dimly lit setting of an overcast sky and low lighting. Originally saw this in 3D theaters. 3D Layering: 6/10 Mostly mild 3D layering, but because there are some medium 3D shots that appear randomly throughout, and even some strong 3D on rare shots, it bumped the overall mild 3D up from 5/10. I'll also added that point because it was mostly filmed in 3D (with CGI characters). But what is disappointing is most of the 3D in this film looks like it takes place in a smashed in world with hardly any depth, where the foreground, mid and background layers are all compressed within inches of each other instead of many yards or meters distance apart into the frame like a normal 3D film. 3D Pop Outs: I don't remember anything popping out of the screen. 3D Framing: The framing was good for a number of shots, with foreground, mid and backgrounds that could work well if the 3D was stronger and deeper into the screen. Favorite 3D Shots: In the final minutes, a shot of Caesar the hero, standing in the midground, with the foreground having lots of metal debris and a circular pillar, and the background more metal in strong 3D. Then when he's facing away towards the background, with apes walking away into the light in strong 3D. And when Caesar is standing by the firepit in the center, with the apes all around him in strong 3D earlier in the film. Why couldn't the whole movie look like that? With strong 3D? 3D Summary: 6/10 A generous 6 out of 10 because the film actually does offer some nice medium 3D layers randomly throughout amid the mostly flat looking mild 3D layered shots, and a few brief but excellent strong 3D shots that made me wish the whole movie looked liked that. 3D Recommended: Not really, but some of the medium to strong 3D moments are worth a look, despite most of this being a flat looking, mild 3D film. I like the movie, but not so much the mild, compressed looking 3D layering most times. Such potential this movie had for the 3D too. Lots of great 3D shots that are held back by mild 3D with very little depth. My ratings scale is based on how I was graded in school, with 60% and below considered near a Failing grade, and 70% decent, 80% very good, 90% great, and 100% (or 10/10) being outstanding. 10/10 A+ 9/10 A 8/10 B+ B 7/10 C+ C 6/10 C- D 5/10 - 1/10 E, F |

Nice write up Zivouhr. I think your innate politeness shows more generosity to this one than I'd offer but, reading between the lines, I think we're along the same lines here about this one's 3D: It's a big disappointment!
Agree - but as of last week it's been nicely equalled/beaten on that front..! Last edited by Telegram Sam; 01-21-2023 at 10:06 PM. |
