Sigh.
Maybe they might be interested in doing a proper repressing in actual 3D…?

It's more likely that Sony used some odd 1.85:1 framing of the original 1.37:1 negative when the DVD was created. The story that the 2D version played at 1.85:1 is fishy to me, but if true, may have contributed to Sony's weird framing.
I don't think it's necessarily as unusual as it sounds. That would be the standard widescreen ratio for films photographed with spherical lenses. If they send out a 35mm print taken straight from one of the separate L/R elements, that's presumably how most places would project it.

If they'd intended to have the 2d version presented 2.35:1, they could've processed them as the September Storm prints were: extract that portion of the frame, and print it 35mm anamorphic.

While there may be a little extra headroom in the 2d theatrical version, here's a recent comment on the 3-D Archive facebook page:

I'd see it as possibly analogous to the situation with certain contemporary movies that have an expanded Imax ratio. The films are intended to be projected that way, but they also have to frame all essential action for the standard release.

Ultimately, if we were lucky enough to have a 3-D Film Archive restoration, I would have total confidence in whatever they deem preferable.

The left/right 35mm elements sat for years at New York processing lab/post house but nothing was done with them. I saw the cans on the shelf about 15 years ago and was hoping for an opportunity to work on it!

... so close, and yet so far.

Perhaps, maybe some years down the line current licenses expire there will be another chance. Maybe there'll come a time when someone decides a 4k release is worth pursuing; in which case they could create the master from the opposite eye, and use that to facilitate the creation of a 3D master. Just a hypothetical scenario.

One thing that can be said for current releases on offer is that they've left plenty of room for improvement.

Fingers crossed ...for the past decade, but still crossed!

While waiting an eternity for "Spacehunter" to ever be given a proper 3D release, found this entertaining bts look at the films SPFX makers! (excerpt from the 2012 film, "Sense of Scale")

Happy 40th Anniversary!
May 20, 1983

Just before the film was released, my older brother and I went to a nearby mall. One of Overdog’s vehicles was parked in the middle of the mall, surrounded by small televisions showing clips from the movie. They had two people dressed up in the fat (bat) creature outfits, walking around the mall handing out fliers for the movie.

Upstairs in the attic I still have the glasses from this movie. So weird to see it in the same theater that would play Jedi just a few days later because the quality of both films are on opposite sides of the spectrum.
