It seems that Sony has removed the whole grain of the film, at least in that trailer.
did you really expect a youtube trailer to look as good as a blu ray?

"Walter Sobchak:

I did end up watching my Blu-ray last night, and it was awesome. I've only seen the movie fully once over ten years ago, but I had remembered it pretty vividly. I watched the Director's cut this time, and I couldn't say how many scenes were different, but I did notice a few interesting scenes I hadn't seen before.

The Blu-ray transfer was pretty incredible though. Amazing colors, and detail. I must say, I was completely transfixed at the end of the movie. The "big reveal" at the end was a sight to behold. I can't imagine how much nicer it'll look in 4K

I think this movie is best seen in pitch darkness. There are so many beautifully lit night time compositions throughout, and they are highlighted even more when seeing the movie in a darkened room.

The movie itself is great. I love the unique and mysterious way that the movie goes about the encounters. It's premise is intelligent, and complex on some levels, but still completely accessible, and non-pretentious. It builds up slowly to a satisfying ending, though one that leaves you wondering what happens next. It left me with great sense of imagination, which I think is one of Spielberg's best strengths as a storyteller.

Anyway, suffice to say, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this movie again, and will definitely try and see it when it hits theaters in September.

Excellent review, Mifunefan. I watched my copy a couple of months ago, and I agree with everything you said. I hadn't seen the movie in about 10 years or so, and I was also surprised at how good it looked. This is a top 20 movie for me.

The cover art is pretty close to the poster art in 1977.

The PQ doesn't look that good in the trailer because it's really compressed.

I remember the digipack release being one of the first few blurays I ever bought. I picked it up from Walmart for a cheap price. I couldn't believe how awesome a package this release was and how good the price was. I think it was like only $15. It really set the bar high for releases at the very beginning of the format.

I love the artwork on the included book in the old edition too. That would have made a nice cover too for this upcoming release

You are assuming that everyone is old enough to even know about this film. So many younger viewers have never even HEARD of this 40 year-old classic. My own two daughters (18 & 21) AND their friends, hear the title and they ask "What's THAT?"

So there's a very wide group of people out there who might see this promotion for this and chose to watch it. So....Why spoil anything for them?

I think most people understand that and try to be courteous, but it's also true that the market for teens today watching 50 year old movies is pretty small. It's not like that's a common thing you have to watch out for.

Wondering what percentage of people these days (adults or teenagers) go to the theater or purchase a movie without at least a minimum web research or friend’s recommendation. The art on this new 4k packaging is awesome imo. It seems, hypothetically talking, that a zero-spoiler black box with the CEOT3K title on it (extreme case example) would only increase curiosity and spoiler ridden research than this sci-fi new cover art.

Don't worry, the movie is about way more than just what Rosebud means anyway.

A long time ago in my first Film As A Narrative Art class, my professor announced exactly what Rosebud meant. 2 mintes before we were about to screen the movie. A room full of 75 people groaned so loud I can hear it in my head to this day.

He goes on to say 'the point is not the reveal but the why and how you go about it.'

Sure. But nobody liked him after that.
