Agreed - Basket Case looks incredible - great restoration. The muddiness is gone, looks like film again. This is the second best 16mm restoration after The Evil Dead. Glad I bought this. And the extras are terrific and very plentiful. Five Star release!

Makes me curious if Synapse didn't hog the negative for Brain Damage how good it would look in 4K.

So there is a special edition out of this right now? I am so confused. I ordered off Best Buy and just received a special edition copy. I can't even locate a special edition in this site's database to add to my collection. Plus since when does a special edition release with a limited edition? More often than not, I don't know if %100 of the time, but the LE releases first and a little down the road they release the SE. Can somebody sort me out here????
Edit- further reseach seems to suggest that this is it. The oddest "limited edition" ever. Last edited by thegreatmutato; 02-28-2018 at 04:16 PM. |

How’s the bitrate on this? I hadn’t realized this is a single disc release, and that is one long list of bonus features — including a feature-length documentary.

Synapse never had access to the negatives, it's why they never put out the blu ray themselves. The negatives are currently buried in a major studio vault that no independent label has access to.

Received it last night and took the time to compare quickly with my Second Sight blu-ray edition and the video quality is a lot better. I was on the fence to double dip but I went ahead because of the extras and the nice edition from Arrow. I didn't though a 16mm would get really much better but I was pleasantly surprise.
The picture is more stable and doesn't jump around as much. I didn't notice at first but the encode is not good on Second sight transfer, in comparison with the Arrow transfer it's clear that they didn't do a good job on that side. Details is better on Arrow and the colors are a lot more natural also. The transfer is more "film like" to me and a better experience. I also noticed tiny blue horizontal lines on the second sight transfer, popping once in a while during the first scene in the hotel room but those are not present on the arrow transfer. Great job MoMa ;-) Didn't thought that movie could get any better on blu-ray. |

Watched it last night, specs are great. Special Features are awesome too. I enjoyed the brief new interview "Basket Case 3 1/2" thought that was pretty neat and the "Inspired By" short was cool too, and or course finally seeing, Slash of the Knife. The Belial Pin looks great next to Elmer on my shelf, home run Arrow!

As far as I’m concerned this is the definitive version of Balset Case on home video. A+ on all fronts. I doubt even a 4K uhd could make much of a difference given the 16mm source. Glad I upgraded my Second Sight edition!

As noted by the Mondo Digital review, this new 4K restoration finally fixes the frame jump issue on past releases:

This has to be one of Arrows best releases, who would of thought a release of this quality would come from a 16mm source, so glad I didn't pass on this release, I just didn't think it would be possible to take "Basket Case" and make it presentable in HD.. How wrong I was.
