That statement is so true. You can also extend it to subwoofers. People automatically assume that the loudest subwoofer is the best, particularly in car audio. Many people who go to showrooms to buy a TV end up buying the TV with the highest contrast. The perception is that the brighest TV in the showroom is the best. That is why manufacturers turn the contrast levels of their TVs very high at factory. The first thing I normally do after I buy a TV is that I immediately turn the contrast level to less than 50%.

I don't know about those stands, I have RB-61's which are pretty big also and I ended up getting small tables from Ikea for them. The speakers are so big and bulky I would be very scared putting them on stands.

cant help out with stands here bud, i personally have mine on some cabinets, fear of having someone knocking em over. when we do move on out of here, i plan to build my own pair of speaker stands. probably made of marble to compensate the years its not been on a proper stand.

or maybe gold.

seriously, im sure a couple of other hornheads can come up with a great solution for you.

Those vintage Polks were great speakers when they were introduced. You can buy them around $300-$400 on ebay and Audiogon.

I did a lot of tweaks to them: changed the tweeters, added a pair of super tweeters, added a 12" subwoofer, and raised them from the floor another 1". They sound as good as any high-end speaker many times more expensive.

Each speaker has two 10" passive radiators. I have been toying with the idea of upgrading those. Damn this upgraditis virus.

That would make me a hornhead too now...haha! The link I posted was from some forum I found on a google search, and this guy uses those stands filled with lead shot (they also have several holes pre-drilled on the top plate for mounting) and they are so sturdy he says you can bump into them and they just vibrate a little They must weigh 50 lbs w/sand + 30 lbs. for the RB-81's......so 80lbs each.....

HaHa!....Tell me about it! Now I have a room 12x16 to finish. Knocking the old to the curb (speaker wise)for the new and I've got a serious bug now! Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the advice guys. I haven't tracked down the RC-62 yet but i'm going to try today or tomorrow. I did find one place so far that had one but the shipping is pretty high. I just bought a pair of RF-62's and an RW-10D yesterday. I'm picking up either RS-42's or RS-52's later this week as well.

I am by no means a stereo guy and just coming up to speed with a lot of this stuff but I have to say I'm amazed at how good the new speakers sound already. I only had a Polk RM6750 setup before so it is quite the jump I think. I have Sony STRG910 that is likely going to be a bit underpowered for my new speakers so I'm planning to pick up an Onkyo receiver: TX-SR607 or TX-SR706 or TX-SR806 in the next couple of months.

I have a big Blu-ray collection and have been much more into those than music but I just dug out my 300+ CD collection and will likely listen to them all a lot more now with the nice speakers.

leadshot is a great choice, compared to sand, considering that sand gets all over the place if not done properly. as long as they're sturdy, and have enough space to hold the speakers if moved around, you should be fine.

Considering you already have horns already (i think), they are highly effective speakers, and 110watts are more than enough to drive em, unless you are planning to run em hot and heavy. How big is the room then? i try to work with what others have, and avoid upgrades unless necessary. for now, your current receiver would work just fine.

oh boy, considering i love also listening to stereo material, and being a veteran starting in the 2 channel world, this is definitely a great start. dont forget to
- properly place your speakers (manuals say to keep em away from the walls, i think about a feet away)
- toe in is definitely important for klipsch speakers
- get some good speaker wires, about 16awg or thicker - preferred 12 in my book.

one thing i also love about klipsch is that they tend to reveal a lot more detail in regards to certain recordings, showing flaws and clips on certain tracks.

I have a Sony STRDG910 and a PS3 Before this week my speaker setup was a Polk RM6750 5.1 set. I just got a pair of RF-62's yesterday and the RW10D sub. I still have the surrounds and center from the 6750 set connected. I'm planning to pick up an RC-62 center this week and RS-42 surrounds. I was posting here the other day about places around here to find an RC-62. I only see the RC-52 listed most places and have only seen it in a store - never the RC-62.

The room I have this setup in now is about 14x12. I have the sub right in the front left corner. I have the front speakers about 1.5 ft in from the front corners of the room. I'm using 16 gauge speaker wire.

Yeah after more listening/watching today I'm rethinking my receiver upgrade. I can already piss of my neighbors (and wife) easily with what I have and I'm loving the sound.

Ah, i remember you, i think i recommended the RC-35s instead, but i can see you like the 62's. not a bad choice either, i just try to keep things in a perspective budget, getting the same results with the RC-35.

Jimbo, great starting point. i personally think its going to overpower the room, but hey, that can still work. 16 gauge would work just fine.

Your receiver should be just fine. upgrading a receiver after that one would only be a lateral move. if you'd start upgrading, get yourself separates at this point. im sure 110watts (even if stated by the manufacturer) should do well paired with those highly sensitive horns. send us some pics and we can further help out.

Thanks,

I do plan to move this all down to the finished basement which will be much bigger but the room isn't done yet. The budget isn't really that big of a deal to me right now (within reason). I've already spent a decent amount so a little more isn't going to be the end of the world. My bonus from work is paying for it all

there you go then. i guess on my end, im pretty much conscious as to how to go about tellin people to spend their money. i always try to act responsible in doing so, without giving you suggestions that would break the bank so to speak.

I wouldn't say either is "better" than the other. The Klipsch has a very slight edge IMO in that they're more efficient, but that's about it. Most importantly, they have 2 completely different sounds. Whichever one sounds better to you is the "better" speaker as far as I'm concerned.

I found an RC-62 today and ended up getting the RS-52's instead of the RS-42's. Now I just need to figure out how to mount the RS-52's in corners. I guess I could either get mounting plates which sound a little expensive (at a stereo shop I guess?) or build my own custom corner braces to hang them on out of wood. I don't need to angle them up or down or anything.
