The song (not score) was always Limahl. The score was done by both Klaus Doldinger (orchestral) and Giorgio Moroder (synthesizer), and the film's final mix contains music from both composers. It is the same mix everywhere, AFAIK. The soundtrack CDs are a messier situation. The American CD contains mostly Giorgio Moroder music, even when the movie scenes used Doldinger's work. The german CD contains much more of Doldinger's music, but still doesn't have his version of Ivory Tower used in the film.

But perhaps you are thinking of "Legend", which sports a Tangerine Dream score in the US cut but a more traditional Jerry Goldsmith score in the international version?

I lectured above, but in the end did not give a list. It will never be the right list because I'll change my mind next week. I believe some of the best music written today can be heard in films (but not all best music of course!). These are some scores that have impressed me over the years, all for different reasons.

- Spider Man (Danny Elfman - his best one, I think)
- LOTR (Howard Shore - I have some problems with it, but what a huge accomplishment)
-The Mission (Ennio Morricone - can't argue with gorgeous)
-Ran (Tôru Takemitsu - strange Pseudo-Mahler, but heart wrenching)
-The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams - long after he's gone, we'll still sing that Imperial March)
-Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (John Williams - brilliant, just brilliant)
-Amarcord (Nino Rota - perfectly encapsulated nostalgia)
-The Adventures of Robin Hood (Erich Wolfgang Korngold - fun!)
-The Prince and the Pauper (Erich Wolfgang Korngold - mega-fun!)
-Psycho (Bernard Hermann - Strings only. No concert piece for sure, but extraordinarily effective)
-Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire (Vladimir Cosma - very simple, based on Romanian folk music, but quite the gamble for any director to accept such a score)
- High Noon (Dmitry Tyomkin - riveting)

jurassic park hands down....I still get chills while watching the "welcome to jurassic park"scene.

The score for "Requiem For A Dream" by Clint Mansell is probably the best I've ever heard IMO. The fact that I've heard it used in tons of other trailers kinda grinds my gears though. I listen to it on my PS3 as background music.
