But perhaps you are thinking of "Legend", which sports a Tangerine Dream score in the US cut but a more traditional Jerry Goldsmith score in the international version? |

I lectured above, but in the end did not give a list. It will never be the right list because I'll change my mind next week. I believe some of the best music written today can be heard in films (but not all best music of course!). These are some scores that have impressed me over the years, all for different reasons.
- Spider Man (Danny Elfman - his best one, I think) - LOTR (Howard Shore - I have some problems with it, but what a huge accomplishment) -The Mission (Ennio Morricone - can't argue with gorgeous) -Ran (Tôru Takemitsu - strange Pseudo-Mahler, but heart wrenching) -The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams - long after he's gone, we'll still sing that Imperial March) -Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (John Williams - brilliant, just brilliant) -Amarcord (Nino Rota - perfectly encapsulated nostalgia) -The Adventures of Robin Hood (Erich Wolfgang Korngold - fun!) -The Prince and the Pauper (Erich Wolfgang Korngold - mega-fun!) -Psycho (Bernard Hermann - Strings only. No concert piece for sure, but extraordinarily effective) -Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire (Vladimir Cosma - very simple, based on Romanian folk music, but quite the gamble for any director to accept such a score) - High Noon (Dmitry Tyomkin - riveting) |

Apollo 13 Matrix: Reloaded Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Fountain Hunt for Red October Spider-Man 2 Crimson Tide And another video-game cheat: Halo (felt like I was playing a movie) |

Come to think of it the music in Poltergeist was great too.
Also Starman has great music. |
