This is, from what ive read, what the problem with this release is...

1) 1080i

2) Incorrect Aspect Ratio

However, because the source of the transfer was this aspect ratio, no information that was present in the OAR is missing. In other words, this film was originally filmed with the aspect ratio of 16:9, and then the director chose to crop the image to 2.35:1. So, even though you are not getting the OAR, there is no information missing from the image, but in fact, you are getting more information at the top & bottom of the screen.

Dvd beaver claims that it is 1080i...I am unable to tell on my tv...it only gives the resolution and not an "i" or "p". Can someone confirm that it is 1080p while the middle of the movie is playing and not just at the start up? That would be stellar if it was infact 1080p!

so if thats true, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 52'' 1080p 120hz Sony by summertime, should I hold off on purchasing this and wait for a 1080p transfer? Is the difference between progressive and interlaced REALLY that noticeable?
nope, only if you want to nitpick or have trained eyes. and certianly it would be more than acceptable for a 720p 46" telly

Well, for all we know they could be mis-prints. I'll probably go rent De-railed this weekend and I'll post my findings.

I picked up the Canadian exclusive for Requiem for a Dream, which was also released yesterday here. Its 1080p, no subs, and uncut at 102 minutes. After watching it last night, I wasn't all that impressed. It is definately a step up from the old Artisan DVD, but does not really look/feel like you're watching a blu-ray. Just kinda soft, plus the film used was a little grainy/cheap-ish.

I couldn't find our World's Fastest Indian release anywhere, which was also to be released.

Any word on the US version? Is it going to include extras and be in 1080p. I am incredibly dissapointed with how they handled the Canadian version and awaiting the US release. But, I've been wanting this movie and hate waiting.

false...the difference is huge. go to your local Best Buy and check out the difference. i went from a 1080i set to 1080p and was blown away.

check out a BD like Cars and see if you can spot a difference. sounds like we're getting into a whole new thread, you may wanna run a search for "1080i" and i'm sure there is a thread about that

From what brand and model did you upgrade from?
if you upgrade from 1080i to 1080p on completely diff. models and pricerange,
your comparison becomes obsolete.
I've read on so many FAQ and threads that there isn't much difference.

Actually, there is. See most sets don't deinterlace properly. So while they're the same resolution, improper deinterlacing leads to a much poorer picture. Plus, there's a a huge bennifit to 24fps playback.

It absolutely matters that the director's original framing been changed. The entire feeling and scope of the shot has been changed. The director's original intentions for the way the film looks has been compromised. If you look at the features on the New Line Platinum Edition DVD, you can even see why they chose 2.35 instead of 1.85 and how much work went into the restoration for that DVD. It's very interestng.

But in short, if the director filmed it with the intention of it being 2.35:1, it should be 2.35:1.
