Well on the way home from work I stopped by Home Depot and picked up some of the textured spray paint. I had no intentions of painting my APC H15 but I had nothing planned for the day and was craving a small project. It's currently sitting in pieces waiting to dry. Maybe later tonight I will get some pictures!

I plan on doing the same, thing yet I live in an apartment so my project is to either visit my parents or find somewhere to do this

That's good to know..thanks

how did you get the chrome APC logo to stick back in after you "broke" it out?

looks amazing by the way...

anyone know where you can still get the deal on them?

+100 I like this look a lot. What kind of paint did you use and how hard was it to block off the front chrome section and APC logo? More details please

I now want to paint mine!!

Guys, go back to page 8 of this thread where he links a step by step guide from some other site on how to do this. The front faceplate and top plate come off, so there's no need to do any taping or anything like that. I'm sure the APC logo can be super glued back on from the inside and you'll just have to put something (thin cardboard) on the inside of the side panels to protect the innards from getting spray paint through the vents.

It was quite easy. It disassembles easily and you only have to paint five parts.

After the paint dried I put the APC logo back into the front aluminum piece and super glued it. It is now separate of the front display unit. As for the deal, you can get it from TigerDirect's eBay page, here.

I used the paint found in the guide wkhanna made at HTGuide Forums. It was Rust - oleaum Fine Texture Black spray paint.

Yea, I used the guide and followed his every step. Though he did not mention how to paint the main body, I just gutted the electronics out and masked the inside and back.

http://www.htguide.com/forum/showpos...9&postcount=83

Just a note, I wouldn't paint the underside of the top lid. I did, for whatever reason, and it was a really tight fit when putting it back together. I sanded it down a bit. I also sanded the front piece so the paint would adhere better. And I painted the four feet because I was bored!

I may need to paint the front again. While it was drying a leaf fell on it and was stuck to it. I tried to scrape it off but it took some paint with it, so I painted that spot again. It's going to bug me since I know about this imperfection! But I must say the rest looks beautiful.

so, all in all, would the only supplies needed be a screwdriver, paint and super glue?

is it hard to paint with that textured spray paint? i am in no way artistic whatsoever and have never even really spray-painted anything. i just dont want it to end up looking streaky or anything like that. is it likely that i could screw this up without any former experience?

To be honest I was worried that I had ruined the unit by doing a bad paint job when I finished painting. When the paint is wet you can see streaks but as it dried it evens out to one consistent surface. Just make sure you stay about 10 inches off the surface and spray with fluid motions slightly overlapping each other. Let it dry for about 30 minutes and then apply a second coat. Quite easy.

Looks easy enough. Sounds like this will be my project for this weekend if it doesn't rain.

If I f**k up this project, I guess I can always say the APC15 only cost me $99

Or you could just sand it down and repaint. I made sure I would not ruin the electronics so I removed everything. Then I was able to paint all pieces without worrying.

I'm sure it will come our fine. I was just adding some light-hearted humor.

I think the key is as you said to paint from a distance of 10"-12", allow to dry completely, and then apply a second coat.

But it sure is nice seeing the pics of how your project came out though!!

Tlmac, that looks good. You just peer-pressured me into trying this out myself...The black unit would match the rest of my equipment much better. We shall see....this weekend I will give it a go.
