If we don't get Ben Hur in UHD this year, I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually planned for this year, but it got delayed indefinitely. A new recent scan exists at the very least, as Lasergraphics has Ben Hur in their list of notable films scanned with their scanners, but Lasergraphics wasn't scanning 65mm film back in 2012, when the blu-ray from the 8K scan was released. We know that there have been issues with manufacturing of discs lately, as George Feltenstein has said over and over for months to explain the delays in WAC's releases (sadly, WHV doesn't have the same transparency). We know that Se7en got pushed out to next year. North By Northwest and Blazing Saddles got moved from early november to mid november. I wouldn't be surprised if Gone with the Wind, The Iron Giant, Amadeus and Little Shop of Horrors also got delayed (Frank Oz even confirmed last year that an UHD would come out this year, and that the 4K restoration was finished). We also know of Amadeus having been restored in 4K this year.
I just hope that if manufacturing issues truly prevent us from getting UHDs of Ben Hur, Gone With The Wind, The Iron Giant and Amadeus this year, Warner doesn't just decide to sit on these movies wait till the next special anniversary, in 2029, because they missed the current special anniversary. That would suck. I would rather have Criterion put all their efforts into getting rights for those movies. While Criterion is often guilty of sitting on a film for years before releasing it, I still don't think the wait would be as long as from now till 2029... Regarding The Iron Giant especifically, I wouldn't be surprised if a major reason for why it could not get an UHD this year is that Brad Bird is too busy making Ray Gunn to properly supervise a new transfer. That said, the current blu-ray is excellent! |

Finally finished this tonight after watching it for a couple of nights in a row. I’m not one for biblical films, but I was quite surprised by this one. The chariot sequence was phenomenal; I had my mouth open the entire time at how epic it felt.

I need to purchase a copy, since I watched it on Tubi, because I want to know how they filmed the chariot sequence—if the supplements go into it. The Greatest Story Ever Told was recommend on Tubi as well. Will start watching it tomorrow.

![]() I believe this release has all the same supplements... ![]() I love The Greatest Story Ever Told but I am a sucker for Biblical epics (the good ones). Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I do. We a need a proper remaster, the blu ray is pretty rough. |

I'm more than a little surprised a movie that is as important to the history of film making as Ben-Hur is hasn't received a 4K release. Showing this movie in its absolute best form should be an easy choice. Its disappointing.

There's a new restoration premiering at the TCM Festival, I am sure it will be out on 4k disc by the end of this year.

That chariot race is one of the greatest action sequences in any film ever. And it stands up with anything today.

Boy do I remember my eff up on Black Friday all those years ago at Best Buy. Picked up the Blu/DVD combo thinking that was the one that was on sale. No way was that massive collector's set so cheap I thought. The combo rang up what I thought was wrong so they adjusted the price. Came home to see in the "post a picture of your most recent haul" thread that indeed, the collector's set was on sale. Waited the next day at work anxiously to get off and go back to Best Buy and I was able to get one. Gave the combo pack to my Pops. This will get a UHD at some point no doubt. If it looks as fantastic as Spartacus which I rewatched recently, then it will be a winner. I hope they pull a Lawrence Of Arabia and spread it onto 2 discs for bitrate.

I just saw this at the Academy Museum (4K DCP "courtesy of Warner Bros" and "restoration by Warner Bros Discovery in collaboration with The Film Foundation") and it looked incredible.

I understand that many AV enthusiasts (such as myself) are eagerly awaiting a UHD Blu-ray of Ben Hur - where we can clearly see the two speers stuck in the beam as Judah is being led away -, but I for one would be willing to wait still a little longer, provided Ben Hur receives an equal Dolby Atmos rejuvenation as Lawrence of Arabia did.
True story: I'm aware that the sound of Ben Hur was limited to available sound technology back in 1959 and each time I upgraded my home theater I felt compelled to apologize to William Wyler for making Ben Hur sound pale compared to all these discrete and dynamic surround sound films projected in my home theater. Today I had the opportunity to experience the Dolby Atmos rejuvenation of Lawrence. Quote: A Dolby Atmos sound rejuvenation you think you've been hit by a train As I started with Disc 2 I remained to watch the scene where Lawrence derails the train. Sounded nice on the Blu-ray with DTS-HD 5.1 upmixed by Neural:X. But with the new Dolby Atmos track the railtrack explosion made my home theater walls tremble and the derailed train moving towards the camera position acoustically sounded as if it would come off the screen and into my home theater! Had never experienced anything like that in my 7.1.4 speaker setup and most assuredly had not expected something like this from a 1962 film. At the risk of film purists crying out in unison "Whip him" I couldn't help but wonder how Ben Hur in general and of course the chariot horse race in specific could profit from such an acoustic rejuvenation. IMHO, it would be glorious! |
