I liked the Wii U and was disappointed that it never took off.

Best system nintendo ever made in my opinion. You get the best of the Wii and a bunch of great Mario games that won’t be made for the switch. Crazy that it never took off.

I like the system too but I completely understand why it flopped hard. The reasons are many.

1. The name/marketing - Seriously, to this day many people still don't know the Wii U was it's own console. I've heard many people say they thought the Wii U was some sort of HD add-on for the Wii or an upgraded Wii. Nintendo made a huge mistake trying to latch onto the Wii brand name by just adding one letter to the name. It backfired in a big way. It didn't help that Nintendo's extremely poor marketing of the console did little to make a point of it being a completely new console.

2. Cost/the GamePad - Nintendo's big gimmick with the Wii U was the GamePad. It was an interesting concept but in the end it cost Nintendo dearly. The biggest problem was it's extremely high initial cost caused the console to be priced far higher than it would have been with a regular controller. They could have at least made the thing optional, releasing a version of the console at a far cheaper price, minus the GamePad. It was also annoying that those of us who liked the GamePad couldn't buy one separately from the console.

3. Garbage third party support. The Wii U was absolute rock bottom for Nintendo in quality third party support. I own 30 Wii U games and the number of third party games in my library is just 5.

USA GamePad battery

Hi all, looking for some advice. We use our Wii U daily, and I noticed the battery life on the gamepad is only around an hour and a half. It used to last longer. Has anyone replaced their gamepad battery with an aftermarket one? And if you did where did you find one? Thanks in advance!

Not an aftermarket one, no. I replaced mine with the higher capacity one straight from Nintendo. Sadly it looks like they're no longer available. It's an easy process. You might want to shoot Nintendo an email to see if they might have a source before scouring eBay for a 3rd party one.

You can always play with the Gamepad plugged in.

I got a relatively cheap Wii U to play the important Nintendo exclusives on it (and Wii games). I got these games so far and was wondering what I'm missing:

Zelda Wind Waker
Zelda Twilight Princess
Mario 3D World
Yoshi's Woolly World
Xenoblade Chronicles X

I'm not interested in the Kirby game because of touch controls. Thanks!

Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101. My two favourite single-player games on the system.

Nintendo Land is also a pretty legit multiplayer/party game, utilizing some of the unique features of the Wii U.

I think these two lists sum it up pretty well as far as the stuff that hasn't made it's way to switch yet. I would add in Zombi U if you don't already have it on a more current console. Paper Mario Color Splash is a divisive game in the series but I still think it's worth it (as long as you're not paying over retail). Finally Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is really great if you're into that type of game.

I looked at that Paper Mario in Gamestop but couldn't tell exactly what kind of game it was. I'll watch some videos. I don't think Pikmin or 101 are my thing but I'll make sure. Thanks guys.

Already happy I bought the system as Wind Waker is a blast and Donkey Kong Country Returns is better than pretty much any "retro" platformers I've played on PC in many years.

The Wii U Virtual Console is still up and running, right ? I´m thinking of buying a Wii U to try out the original Splatoon and Mario Maker. But the virtual console would be a great bonus, if it´s still accessible.

There are rumors that it's closing but I think it's still running.

I hope not, they really should wait until they add Super NES, N64 and GBA games on Switch Online before closing the eshop.

Finally bought a Wii U Super Mario Maker Bundle through a german retailer yesterday for 129€ (Listprice was once 389€!). No more warranty but otherwise it should be fine and hopefully at my place at the end of this week. Any tipps regarding physical Wii or Wii U titles I should try to pick up? Also regarding virtual console titles which are not also on the 3DS shop, the NES/SNES Mini or the Switch? If it's on those sources, I will stick to them. Will just try to get the main Nintendo Releases, which are not available on those right now. Regarding Windwaker and Twilight Princess I'm unsure, because I'm almost certain those two will be ported to the Switch rather sooner than later. Think I will start with a Pro/Controller, Splatoon and maybe Nintendoland regarding the physical stuff...

Recently, I thought about re-purchasing a Wii U to play Wii/GCN games, then I just settled on getting an official component cable and an SD Memory Card (for GCN games).

I've got one of those controller adapters of PS2 to GCN/Xbox so I'll be trying that (it's still sealed) although I do want to buy either an official GCN controller in very good condition or a Hori controller (seems to be the only decent third party ones for the platform).

I had a Wii U and the Switch has most games ported to it so got no interest on playing Wii U games again.

The Wii U cannot play Nintendo GameCube Game Discs.

It can't, but it can play it "digitally."

Would've been cool if the Wii U had GCN controller ports like the Wii had so the adapter wouldn't be needed.

The Wii U launched 10 years ago today in North America. Still one of the consoles I'm most sad to have seen been a failure - right up there with the Dreamcast. Even still, I get why it ultimately flopped. It got a lot of things right, but Nintendo really dropped the ball in some respects - especially naming and marketing.

The name, console design, gamepad quality (screen and plastic), digital triggers, low storage...

Wii U feels like a very rushed console without much thought put into it and that's a shame because it was really good and fun to use.

In most respects, the Wii U was a failure for Nintendo. The console only sold just over 13 million systems, which is a far cry from the 100+ million systems that both its predecessor and successor hit. That said, the Wii U did have its supporters and Nintendo was able to release several great games for the system. While most of them have been ported over to the Switch, there are still a few games locked to the system and many owners are still using it as a Virtual Console machine. Unfortunately, it sounds like keeping your Wii U running is about to become a bit more difficult as Nintendo Japan announced today that it will no longer be repairing Wii U consoles or peripherals.
