Yes, definitely Tenebre & Phenomena. Also The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red/Profondo Rosso & Inferno.

I second all the above recommendations. I would say that Inferno and Deep Red should be next on the list. Inferno is probably a bit more divisive, but it shares the most in common with Suspiria. Phenomena and Opera are generally considered second tier, but Phenomena is one my personal favorites. I'm not a huge fan of the Animal Trilogy, but Bird with the Crystal Plumage would be the standout of the three.

I think I'll have to check out Deep Red and Inferno next.

Nuh, Deep Red is his best, followed by The Bird With Crystal Plumage.

I find Opera and Phenomena (highly) overrated.

My favorite is Deep Red, Tenebre, Suspiria, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, Inferno.

In that order.

No, Tenebrae is his best! Which I totally spaced on and forgot to mention.

Eh, the comedy bits in Deep Red fell completely flat and took me out of the movie. I also found it so predictable despite some cool scenes. Honestly, though I can be very tough on Argento. For instance, the dog scene in Tenebre almost ruined the whole movie for me because I found it highly nonsensical and ill-fitting based on previous events in the story. With Opera, the end scene was just about the corniest ending that I've ever seen that felt spliced in from a reel full of bad TV commercials about nature that negated the whole movie for me. I understand many fans don't treat most of his movies seriously in terms of plotting, dialogue and acting (mainly due to the dubbing) but I can only take so much cheese in a movie that is trying to be serious, lol. But again, that's just me. I do appreciate and am a big fan of Suspiria and Inferno, mainly because they look so beautiful that I treat them as living paintings that distract me from the utter stupidity from the actual events taking place in both films. In any event, I'd say Tenebre and Phenomena are his best films in terms of technical marvel, structure, plotting, acting and pure cinema. I still need to see his other works though like Bird With a Crystal Plumage and Cat O'Nine Tails.

I'm way behind.

When is suspiria coming out?

I know it's part of an unofficial trilogy. What are the other 2 and what order do you watch them in?

From what I've gathered, it's coming out...eventually. I don't think there is any sort of concrete date set.

It's the first part of the Three Mothers trilogy. Which is Suspiria, Inferno, and The Mother of Tears. You can watch them in that order. Or you can just skip The Mother of Tears and continue thinking Argento never finished the trilogy. It's a major drop off in quality from the other 2. That said, it's been years since my initial viewing of that film, so maybe it's not as bad as I remember.

Everything he's made post Sleepless has been pretty terrible sadly. Though there was one cool
[Show spoiler] disembowelment strangulation by weird goblin people
scene in it.

I'd stand by most argento films up until and including stendhal syndrome.

trauma and two evil eyes are lower quality than then rest in that period.

Sleepless really surprised me by how good I found it. That's a film of his that really deserves a solid re-release. Honestly, I didn't mind The Card Player, either. It was simple enough, that tried to over-complicate itself. But, I liked the idea behind it. I do think Pelts was one of the best episodes of season 2 of Masters of Horror, too.

I've always been a big fan of Argento. He's one of the few directors who entire filmography I own. So, I can biased a bit on some things.

Bird - Opera: that's the golden age of Argento to me, with Suspiria, Tenebrae and Opera being my absolute favorites. Love the animal trilogy as well, Inferno and Phenomena are my least favorites.

I mean, that is the golden age, period. He didn't make a film for several years after that.
