I mean I think Zaavi has a few out there like a steel of the SC release. That one isn't terrible as a character mash up like Total Recall, but then they have another that looks odd, and most of the stuff I see is just character mash up weirdness.

Like I said I dig something new, and although I feel they could have tried a bit harder on the back of this steel, it's altogether still appealing. I love the green color. I think maybe I just wish they had something cooler than the cop car on the back like maybe the Chinese takeout scene or maybe the singer. There are a lot of things you can do with the art but we haven't seen a whole lot of decent takes that is for sure.

I saw this but I guess the big question is if it will be the Sony or the StudioCanal tranfer...

It'll have the StudioCanal master for sure, since it is licensed from Gaumont.

Funny enough Sony did have the rights to it in Spain as well at some point. I always thought they only ever had it in the US.

Thanks- just a bit worried as Edivisa Films (Spain) have released a number of 'dumbed down' standard blurays (single layer discs, smaller bitrates etc.) compared to other Euro countries and the UK.

I find it funny how it's technically one of Sony's uglier 4K disks despite not really being all that objectively bad, they just really decided to up the sharpening for whatever reason. Not entirely surprising though, it is one of their earlier 4K disks after all.

It all started back when they released it for the first time on BD, in 2006. People complained that it wasn't a big enough jump from the DVD so they re-did it by sharpening it to shit, and that look carried over to all Sony releases since.

I've never seen how the original BD looks and it's been so long ago that you can't even find screencaps online. Maybe it did look like an upscaled DVD but I'd rather watch that than the ugly 2007 "remaster".

Capsaholic does have caps from the 2007 BD, listed as the "remastered" BD and yes it does look very ugly

I recall with some of Sony's earlier BDs, while they were one of the best, if not, the best studios for not using DNR, they liked to push the contrast and EE a bit.

I never had the original Sony BD, but I had the mastered in 4k one and it looks the same as the Sony UHD it's oversharpened, but a bit brighter looking even. The Studio Canal FiM is the definitive disc of this imo unless Sony ever remasters it again. Also when I got mine from Amazon it still came with slipcover very nice cover art.

I know, but that original 2006 one is kinda lost, in that you can't find much info about it anymore.

Back when Sony did their "Remaster", Gaumont released their own version in EU. It's crazy to think that most people, at the time, actually thought the Sony one was the better version.

Ah I thought you were referring to the 2007 one my bad

Kinda reminds me of the original 2006 BD of Full Metal Jacket, I only ever found caps of it on one website that I've since not been able to locate

Yep, it's always bugged me too. Not in a I can't watch this way, but in a man this film could look so much better way. Thank god for the SC release. I can finally watch this how it's supposed to look.

That Sony release almost has the look of a 1080p video transfer in places it's been sharpened so much.

Can somebody tell me which discs I am to keep. The steel is a two disc. I assume all the extras are on the bluray correct? So i think I just toss my Sony disc then.

Plus the 4K disc has the exclusive feature "The Director's Notes: Luc Besson Looks Back" (10:29), so you'd need both of the Sony BDs.

Can you report what trailer is featured on it as well, please? And in what quality it's in? It's one of the greatest trailers ever made and the music licensing for it has made it impossible to find on any release except the original DVD of The Professional and the German (?) Blu-ray release. Both in terrible SD.

I managed to rip a copy from YouTube when there was a recreated HD version of it (pretty dang close minus a fire effect on the title logo and some of the shots being clear alternates as the trailer has deleted/alternate shots).

Well I am exceedingly happy with Amazon UK. They sent me a perfect copy of the Studio Canal WITH a slipcover, which kinda surprised me at this point. Not sure when release date was, but damn it's not too bad looking. At least the usual numbers and ratings kinda blend in a bit more than some. Happy to have this proper version finally. No need to switch out steel disks at all.
