Shell, would Kenji Misumi not fit the director's list? By my count, I believe 10 movies of his that he directed were released by Criterion, all from the Zatoichi, and Lone Wolf and Cub sets

The hardest part was normalizing the data. Criterion omits the country for some of its releases when viewed in list view which is a problem because the wiki list does not list country. For more than a few of them I had to lookup the country individually.

The box has a spine (#679) but the films in the set do not. I treated it as 1 release. If I made them 25 items I'd have to the same for other box sets. If I went that far then I should probably list short films and feature films on disk as bonuses. I didn't want to go down that rabbit hole.

ShellOilJunior: Thanks a ton for creating those charts and graphs. I could stare at these images for days, if not centuries. I wish the Criterion website had cool data like this on their site.

Exactly! Who does Wim Wenders think he is?

They’re gonna drag out the rest of the John Hughes releases, aren’t they? Seems like it’ll be one per year. Hopefully the release Sixteen Candles before Ferris Beuller.

No need for the snark. I was just speaking for myself. Obviously I'm happy for the fans of these films... I even mentioned that I'm still more than satisfied with Criterion's output this year.

Depends if you want any of the films that are currently on sale on Amazon? Check out the Amazon Criterion thread:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=15549122

If any of those titles jump out at you, then you will get them cheaper right now. Also, there's an October one-day flash sale at Criterion's site where you don't pay sales tax(in most states) and get free shipping at $50. Otherwise, you can wait till November for the B&N Criterion sale.

I got The Blob when the Amazon sale started. Just got Hopscotch too. Great time to get some titles I hesitated to pay full price for.

Watch the Vampyr blu-ray last night, and unsurprisingly the transfer seems to be sourced from not only an old restoration but a dated scan (As an example I was more pleased with the blu-ray of Island of Lost Souls even though the source material there was more problematic). What surprised me (unpleasantly) was the stepmotherly treatment afforded to the special English text version that Criterion had prepared during their DVD release with translated versions recreated in the original style of the large blocks of scrolling text one comes across in the film. That version, which has been my preferred way of watching the film (a way I find far less intrusive to the movie experience than trying to read subtitles placed over onscreen text), has been given a visibly inferior encode (11-15MBps) and for some reason a separate lossy Dolby track (why it could not have shared the same audio track as the main feature I can't understand, since the inserts were purely visual).

If you don't already have the film this is a great buy, but for someone that has the DVD, this upgrade doesn't feel as superior as it should have.

in my opinion I think the tree of life extended version is one of the best things I can think of that they have put out in a long while
I feel if they put this cut out first, it would have gotten a much better reception

They’re really cracking down on sales tax for internet sales lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if Criterion collects sales tax for all states that have a sales tax during the next sale. Anyway, I wouldn’t count on not getting charged sales tax.

Speaking of the Amazon sale, any thoughts on Ride with the Devil? I’ve had it in my cart a few times, but I’ve never pulled the trigger on it.

Great battle scenes, unique/well developed perspective on the Civil War, and great character/actors, but the film gets side tracked with some forced romantic subplots along the way that take too much focus towards the end and drag the movie out a bit too long.

Good, not great, but would definitely recommend if you like Ang Lee, the Civil War, or character-driven war films. I would take The Ice Storm over it everyday of the week, though when it comes to Ang Lee Criterion releases.

I'm hoping they won't be enacted till after the midterm elections. I know in Maryland there's talk of extending the sales tax to smaller sites. So far, I've yet to be charged sales tax for Amazon Marketplace, Kino Lorber, and Deep Discount but IDK how much longer online retailers hold out after the ruling in South Dakota v Wayfair.
