They may not have been in financial trouble, but I wonder how that worked out financially - a flat-rate for cinephiles: a full years's access to large film libraries for the money that would buy you 5 Criterions in a flash sale.

It may have cut into their sales a little, but I doubt it had a major impact. Just speaking for myself, I've been a subscriber since it launched and I've still bought about 15 Criterion blu-rays in that time including a few box sets.

It's hard to know. We'd need to see Criterion's bottom line, and see whether sales dropped once FilmStruck started and, if so, whether the revenue generated through FilmStruck made up for the loss of sales.

I'm sure there are many people like yourself who have reaped the benefits of FilmStruck, yet continued to buy Blu-Rays/DVDs.

Speaking for myself, I buy very few Criterion releases. That's not because I don't enjoy them. I do. But my local county library system carriers almost every Criterion release and there is never a wait. I can get almost anything within a week of requesting it. Further, and just as important, there are many Criterion releases that, while I enjoyed the film, are not something I will rewatch often, if at all. I try to limit my personal library to movies that I will watch over and over again.

I have enjoyed FilmStruck because, even though my local library carries almost everything, it is still easier to watch things on FilmStruck, especially at a moment's notice.

It's still early yet, and Criterion my partner with another streaming service. If they don't, that's a good sign that either they were losing money because of the service, or the studios felt that they could make more money utilizing another method of delivery.

Oh snap, Janus Films has pages for POLICE STORY and POLICE STORY 2.

Has this been noted yet? Sorry for the repeat information if it has.

No doubt this next year will be telling. If they can find something within that time it's a pretty good sign that AT&T/Warner just considered it excess baggage. If that's the case then that stinks.

I feel the Criterion doomsday prophecies are a little premature, especially since there doesn't seem to be a slip in their output whatsoever.

I think Criterion is just fine. We were only speculating that the streaming service may have marginally cost them some money in sales.

I've just kind of seen things elsewhere as well. It was kind of expected too when I first read there FS news.

Yeah it was a tough Friday for sure. But most of what I read indicates that this was a corporate decision rather than a Criterion one.

Watched Cold Water today, my second criterion of the day, and I loved it. I really feel Assayas is one of the most underrated filmmakers alive. Everyone of his films hits me hard. Hope Criterion keeps releasing more of his.

On a related not, in the included essay about Cold Water, the author talks about other films of a similar style and A Brighter Summer Day is mentioned. See that it is in the collection and curious to know if it is recommended by any of you fellow Criterion lovers.

Instead of making a statement about having a question, why not post the question first?

You'll get more response that way.

He's the best troll ever because he's JUST subtle enough with his use of ignorance to fool the majority around here.

Yeah, this was posted a while back. Hopefully, they can now bring over some of those other nice films that Eureka has been releasing over in the UK like the Once Upon a Time in China series and others.

There is no way that if I were watching something now, I would be participating in an online discussion forum. When there's a movie I want to see, I want to be engrossed in the movie. I guess maybe I just don't understand the current ADD-beset generation...
