I had antelope at the Bachelor party tonight. I never shy away from tasting new foods, because we only spin around the sun a few times and I try to make the most of it. Bachelor party was at a German brewhaus north of San Antonio, and they had Antelope on the menu.

Incredibly delicious. Amazing. Better than Texas Venison.
Did you go into a "circle of life" rant while you were eating the antelope?

No, but I was tempted to shout "I gotta have a wildebeast!" after trying the antelope.

I live in Central Texas. A Bambi damn near totalled my car. Consequently, I eat Bambi any chance I get, and his relatives are fair game - literally.

As you should, deer meat is absolutely delicious .

Oh, and not to derail this thread, but am I the only one for whom the death of Bambi's mother did absolutely nothing? I mean, I did think it was sad, and all, but I never ever cried during the movie. I can't be the only one, right?
Now, Dumbo, that's something else entirely.

Jeesh I'm starting to sound like a 1940s critic myself..
Actually, you're sounding like a critic of a far later era--this one.
Take it from me-- a frustrated classical music radio dj who watches and hears his world being phased out of media every day.

At the time of "Fantasia"'s release, classical music was very popular among the "masses" and heard regularly on commercial radio--- "Fantasia" conductor Stowkowski's Philadelphia Orchestra for instance. musical variety programs starring popular opera stars of the era...and NBC even created an elite orchestra (the NBC Symphony) for the world's most famous conductor of the era, Arturo Toscanini. Sure, right-wing religious nuts squalled, like today, about 'christian' values and their lack in films-- but Beethoven didn't suffer.
Ironically, the worst criticism I've ever heard of the film "Fantasia" was recently-- at the time of the release of this blu-ray set. It was by a Boston music critic speaking on NPR. His disdain was so snobbish you could "see" the nose in the air over the radio! (LOL-- how counter-productive of him!) Were it not for the clout and prestige of Disney, the underrated "Fantasia 2000" would never have been made. And, indeed, a "Fantasia" for today by anyone else (or even Disney) would never get green-lighted for production, let alone be released to today's fan-boy audiences...who wouldn't come at all.
Please excuse the length of this post. I just wanted to say this: Support your local arts organizations...or they WILL disappear!!

Interesting to know, I thought everyone in the 1940s was just obsessed with the music of that time (you know, eh.. well I can't think of any examples right now, big bands and jazz or something?), and that classical music was phasing out.

Also I don't think Fantasia 2000 is underrated, I would even dare call it overrated.

Taken on it's own terms, and not as a sequel to Fantasia, F2k is a fine, beautiful film. It only comes up short, in my opinion, taken in the context of the first film, because the 1940 Fantasia makes the 2000 version seem as dangerous, revolutionary, and earth-splitting as elevator music. Fantasia was about something, part of a movement in animated expression. Fantasia 2000 was about continuing the legacy so even more films would be made, and so consequently, it was designed to be as accessible as possible. Roy really wanted to keep going with more Fantasia features, but he needed F2k to prove the franchise could financially justify the production of more shorts.

It's too bad Roy didn't live to work more with John Lasseter (after Roy saved the company -- again). Given Lasseter's support for short subjects, I can see them putting the Fantasia experiment back on the front burner, as it were.

I bit. I saw a new copy at my local FYE ... although it was $45.99. But, still, this thing is OOP and selling for more by third parties. AND it had a mint slip.
