Definitely, I wasn't criticizing Carpenter.
But if we're only respecting the Halloween films Carpenter cares about, then it's only the 1978 film.

As a huge Halloween fan for years, I was skeptical about the news of a new re-booted?! film. I had high hopes for the Rob Zombie version back in 2007, and when I saw that theatrically I was extremely disappointed.

However, after just seeing the trailer for the new forthcoming film, I am impressed. It looks great! Very tense & suspenseful, and has the look/feel/vibe of the original film in a completely modern setting.

It actually doesn't seem to be a reboot, and more of a retroactive sequel to the 1978 film. And, they are throwing out the continuity established by Halloween 2 - 8, and just keeping the continuity established in Halloween I (1978) (obviously Halloween III doesn't count since it's not part of the Michael Myers saga).

That being said, at the end of the 1978 film, Myers was shot repeatedly by Sam Loomis (Pleasance) and left for dead, though he did obviously survive that because his body was gone at the very end. So.... based on the trailer for this 2018 film, Myers was captured at some point after the end of the first film (off-screen) and taken back to the institution.

In any case, really looking forward to seeing this in October.

I think the film shouldve been her waiting all these years for him to escape but instead he just dies in the institution from old age. Then she is so disappointed, she commits suicide. The End.

At the end of the trailer, why is she trying to close the closet door with the lights on? Wouldn't that scene be better with the lights off?

I don’t understand how the ending of the original was tweaked. Michael survived the shooting, probably walked a couple blocks, and then was captured. It doesn’t remove any of the mystery of the ending of the original because Michael still survived getting shot six times. He’s still the boogeyman. If they’re making a direct sequel 40 years later, it makes more sense that he was captured than wandering around for 40 years before deciding to go after Laurie again.

I can solve the mystery of Michael surviving being shot so many times.

He's 50 Cent aka Curtis Jackson. Get rich or die tryin'.

That's literally Halloween H20.

Ignoring Halloween II has a purpose - you're wiping away the (god-****ing-awful) sister twist and returning to the simplicity of the original's story.

Ignoring H20 but keeping Halloween II? You don't gain anything from that story-wise.

Also Halloween II a piece of shit that people are fooled by because it's set on the same night.

Also Halloween II is great as a sequel that people love because it's set on the same night.

Exactly. Since the 1978 film is the only film in the Halloween continuity that the 2018 film is referencing, then the above explanation is the only one that makes sense. I.e., Michael wanders off after being shot numerous times at the end of the first movie, then is captured (off-screen); and is in the mental institution for 40 more years...until he escapes again in this new film.

This film needs an original title. How about Halloween: Breakout. Michael Myers breaks out of prison and the teenagers have breakouts and get pimples.

I wasn't overly impressed, certainly not enough to be convinced by the silly retconning. Will give it a chance and go see it, but I am far from convinced by the squee "every other sequel is SHITE but this won't be!" brigade from what I've seen so far.

So basically we get:

Halloween 1 + Halloween 2018 - First continuity
Halloween 1 + 2 + 4 + 5 + 6 - Second continuity
Halloween 1 + 2 + H20 + Resurrection - Third timeline
The Rob Zombie Movies - Fourth continuity

Cool. The trailer looks awesome.

Watched the trailer this morning at work when it first premiered and have seen it about 6 or 7 times since then. My initial thoughts this morning were "I'm gonna have a f'in blast with this thing at 7pm, Thursday, October 18th. F work and F the rest of the day".

Then I calmed down and watched it again. I am VERY much looking forward to this film. I LOVED the trailer! The homages to parts 2, 4 and H20 in the preview look interesting. I don't mind them. The H20 one is pretty in your face though, not subtle at all. That's fine but I find it a little odd. Anyway, moving on.

I like the fact that it takes place in a very middle to lower middle class area and it doesn't treat the characters like trash the way Rob Zombie's films did. These people look like very decent, typical "rustic folk" you'd find in middle America. I'm an Italian from NY so trust me, I mean that with love. The brother-sister rumor line drops perfectly well, establishing the break in continuity. Jamie Lee looks appropriately haggard but bad ass, now that she's not living in sunny California (anymore )

I think the one problem that I see could arise due to the filmmakers retconning all of the sequels is you no longer have this epic legacy of evil and murder. It's not quite as convincing that these British researchers would be investigating some dude who killed 3 people 40 years ago. I didn't quite get the weight of the one teen talking about Laurie Strode to her granddaughter because the mythos that would lend gravitas to that conversation is wiped away once we only go back to the original film. Now I could totally be wrong and there's a big surprise awaiting us when the film begins but that's the one area I see having a few issues with.

Having said all of that, I watch the trailer again and I am as stoked and psyched as I was earlier this morning. I am SO ready for this thing. I'm not a Star Wars or Marvel fan at all so to the few people out there like me, THIS is truly our highly anticipated popcorn film of 2018.

Jamie Lee Curtis looks like she is tired of this shit and is only doing it for a paycheck(And she already faced Michael in epic fashion in H20. This looks pathetic in comparison.), and what is she replacing Loomis? Because that's what this looks like.

More like "the night Michael should just go home".
The problem I have with H20’s ending is that it was planned all along for Laurie to behead he wrong person. Resurrection didn’t retcon anything. If that explanation was only thought of during the screenwriting process for Resurrection, then it would be much easier to ignore it and H20’s ending would be perfect.

I see that people not only here, but on YouTube and other sites, keep bringing up that someone who killed 3 people 40 years ago, (it's really 5 + a dog) wouldn't be relevant today, that nobody would remember or care. But keep in mind he was also shot 5 times, stabbed, fell of a balcony. And maybe in the 40 years he's been locked up, he has hurt or killed other inmates or staff members.

Right, that's why I said I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to the legacy of Michael Myers in the story they're building that takes place between 1978 and now and replaces the lore we've all watched over the past 40 years. Trust me, I'm down for anything. If they construct this just right and sell me a whole new 4 decades of "evil" (in Mr Pleasance's voice, of course), I'm ready to buy. It's just the one thing I felt was a little lacking in the trailer but that is NO condemnation. I am all about this film.
