"When 400,000 men couldn't get home, home came for them."

I didn't know much about Dunkirk before watching it, but when I read the above line (which is printed of the front of the case and all the promo materials) I was like "got it."

Oh, in that broad a sense yeah. But keeping track of which characters were which and when things were happening, or what the "one day", "one hour" and "one week" captions meant, and things of that nature...nope.

It probably didn't help that until Googling halfway through the film I was unfamiliar with that definition of "mole".

But that's the whole point of the movie. It doesn't want you to keep track of anything or anybody. It's like sitting at a corner of an intersection and just watch traffic go by in a sense

Watched Dunkirk a second time and I must say I enjoyed it much better than my first viewing. For me I found myself being pulled into the situation on screen, into the present peril the characters were experiencing. I was in there boots fearing for my life thinking shite......war is hell!
So, while many have said character development is none existent I felt a connection of sorts to the soldiers plights. I understand now with the small glimpses Nolan pulled from his actors with minimal dialogue what they were like as characters. Even with Tom Hardy's mostly covered face his eyes expressed a dogged determination to take out that bomber.
Aside from it's awesome technical merits I can now say Dunkirk works for me and look forward to my next viewing......

I'm still a little peeved at the lack of realistic war carnage/blood letting though.
My wife says I'm a little blood thirsty....not. I just want a fully graphic war depiction is all in this modern era of movie making magic

He was asking for blood and open guts and machine guns and carnage.
I simply accommodated him with a suggestion. Mel Gibson is big on blood, Jesus Christ.

I am inclined to agree with you. Why is is that no good deed seems to go unpunished?

I liked Hacksaw Ridge a lot. If you look at the first half of the film as an homage to WW-II rah rah, gung ho war movies it works, I think. The second half, which depicts the actual fighting, is both harrowing and well done. Better yet, it has a demonstration quality TrueHD Atmos soundtrack. I think it's damn near a great film, 9 Stars out of 10.

Are you cursing there in sheer exasperation or are you saying that Gibson is big on blood and big on Jesus? The sentence works both ways, nicely played sir.

If that's the case it's about 70 minutes too long and has too many recurring characters.

No cursing Geoff, it was an intended pun in reference to this:

Watched it yesterday. Found it meh. Too many things to keep track of. Watched it again again today. Having seen it once it was far easier to follow and much more enjoyable. Felt more of intensity this time.

Glad I watched the credits. They had a nice dedication.

At the end, in their special thanks section of the credits, they thanked Sir Michael Caine. Why? Was he in the movie and I just missed it?

He was the voice Tom Hardy was talking to at the beginning of the film.

Yep. He was the voice on the radio talking to the pilots.

He's a pilot and he's there in the plane scenes. And he makes a big impact @ the end.
