2001 was fine
and reports for this suggest colours should be fine including the tennis ball

Quote:
The film looks absolutely gorgeous, we sat in the third row because we wanted to really feel immersed in the film and wow did that ever create an experience (I also really wanted to be able to see the film grain lol).

The first thing I really noticed was the sound. I've never heard the audio so clear and the soundtrack and musical cues have such depth. It's really loud without being overtly so, and it never overpowers dialogue. I found it really added to the tension in many scenes, especially the ones where Danny has his visions of the elevators of blood, when he's in the room playing darts and the Grady daughters walk in and the opening credits really pack a punch. It's just a really intense aural experience that I've never had watching this film before. It sounds really, really good.

And the video: There's so much beautiful grain on this master, you can see every snowflake during the snowstorms, and the movie has this really diffused, beautiful hazy look in a lot of shots (obviously intentional) but what I really wanna stress is how beautifully rendered those shots are. You can just see the haze hanging there when Jack is walking down the hallway before the party scene in the Gold Room, among others. The red of the bathroom with Jack and Grady really pops. The colours are so beautiful and vibrant (the tennis ball is back to its yellow/green colour ) and that pink look that the previous blu-ray had is completely gone.

Oh and for the record, the Saul Bass logo is not present on this restoration. It starts with the same Warner logo that was on the previous blu-ray. Minor gripe though for what really is an incredibly beautiful restoration. Unless Warner somehow f*cks up the compression (which I honestly doubt), people are going to be blown away with this one.

Further down the list but Ugetsu has Kurosawa's Cinematographer so you can count it even though it's Mizoguchi Directing

I've noticed for the past few months HMV has a ton of cool new merchandise for horror films and really cult films in general such as collector coins and photo prints but today I noticed one for The Shining and it looks really nice. I don't know what size it is but the print is matted and ready for framing and has the original poster art. Quite a lot of horror ones I really like. This is one pic I found online. It does look nice in person but no price. I thought maybe £20 because they had similar prints for Jaws and i think the Child's Play films and I'm sure they were £17.99 but this pic says £7.99 so that to me is definitely worth it. When I look at the bit we can see of the Jaws print there I think the one I saw was different, I don't think it was matted at all. I'll need to head in and have a proper look around because in Glasgow they had the Shining one next to the big horror film deal they have going on just now whereas all the other stuff I saw was at a different part of the store.

The Shining, Goodfellas, Apocalypto and The Revenant are amazing films.

I would like to buy apocalypto on blu-ray, but it is discontinued and the price for which they are for sale is exorbitant. At some point I would like to import it from U.K

Zavvi has that same print with frame
plus few others for The Shining
plus a doormat and some dolls

there's tons of The Shining collectables on eBay too like socks, t-shirts etc

It says there the white border is part of the image but I thought it was actually mounted in HMV, I never held it but it looked that way. I like the one that has the map of the hotel. I'll head in tomorrow and maybe hold it in my hands and get a better look at it and see if they have others there but they do look very high quality. I'll have a look on Ebay too and see what is available.

I enjoy his videos. I like that he does comparisons between 3D and UHD releases. If he likes the 3D better, he says so. If he likes the UHD better, he says so. And I find his videos entertaining, which is clearly what he's aiming for.

That's not what he said. He said the better your TV the better the color will be, which is true. A cheapo Wal-Mart 8-bit UHD TV with poor HDR and no wide color gamut will not deliver the same color as a premium set. And not all premium sets offer the same color quality either. Otherwise it wouldn't matter which brand TV you went with as they would all deliver the same results.

Actually if you read his post he did say that. I understand what you are saying but his wording didn’t highlight that.

I did read his post which is why I commented. He said the color would be better on a better TV. That's true. He didn't say the teal would be gone on a better TV.

BS. Teal push has nothing to do with how much you spend on a TV. It’s about accuracy. My $800 panel in my living room has a lower dE than my $3,500 panel in my dedicated room. He’s talking about teal specifically. Where the more expensive display will trump a cheaper panel is in colour volume, DCI P3, tone mapping and contrast.

I'm aware teal push has nothing to do with TV color accuracy.

If he's suggesting that a better TV will reduce teal, he's wrong.

I was simply stating that he's correct in the point that a better TV will certainly offer improved color accuracy in general.

Yep, if you read my second last post I said I agreed with you on that

I’ve calibrated many panels and projectors and even expensive units aren’t always accurate out of box. It just depends.

Agreed on that. Big brand name or high price doesn't necessarily mean accurate out-of-the-box settings.
