You know, it's largely absurd when people say that any PS3 game looks like PS2 graphics, but this takes the cake. Are you playing on a 5 inch screen? That's the only way you could possibly believe that Uncharted had PS2-level graphics.

Didn't mean to offend anyone. I'll qualify my disappointment further. I game on a 92" screen, from a 1080p SXRD projector in a dedicated studio renovated and calibrated specifically for evaluating home video presentation quality for a number of movie studios. The projector hasn't been recalibrated since I retired a couple years ago, but that's only likely to impact it's greyscale tracking, as such tends to shift slightly as bulbs age or are replaced. If I were still working in the industry, it would need to be rechecked every 1000 hours or so. All other aspects of calibration (focus, white levels, black levels, etc) that don't require special equipment, I can do myself and because I have a background in art, I can get the color tracking pretty close by eye as well. Gamma on the other hand I also need equipment for.
After playing U2, the lack of detail in the graphics from U1, was rather disappointing, not that I expected it to be as amazing as U2s, being an older game, but I hoped it would have been a wee bit closer in comparison. Instead the difference looked almost as vast as going from 480p to 1080p, in terms of resolve. That's probably an overstatement, as 720p to 1080p didn't quite do the difference justice; maybe 540p to 1080i would be better. Or the difference might also be equated in terms of style, like the simple graphical style of Toy Story, compared to the more sophisticated patterning, designed to looke more real, like Final Fantasy. Though, I don't think an argument could be made that the absence of finer texturing in U1 was due to intended style as much as limitation. Admittedly U2's graphics are about the best I've seen still today; and U1's might have been OK for its generation - I'll have to give ND the benefit of the doubt there, as I was actually at the press event Sony held to promote the title, and I know they were very proud of it at the time - but the difference in detail between the two is more than a nominal amount, it was much closer to Oblivion or Skyrim RPG graphics, which tend to have considerably less detail, supposedly due to the magnitude of the gaming environments, than games like U2, MGS4, Arkham Asylum, etc. My only other criticism of U1 was that character controll was less refined. It wasn't as awkward or frustrating as The Force Unleashed (the first one, not the second which was much improved), but some you don't have the level of character control you have in newer games like U2 or Arkham Asylum, which was a little frustrating when trying to drive a jetski up a waterfall and some of the more challenging leaps you have to make. Picked this up several years ago on Black Friday and finally took it out of shrink wrap a few days ago, lol.
I may actually get through my game back log! Here's hoping! Anyways, the game was great, just a little on the short side. Music, graphics, atmosphere, game play, and story were all there. I managed to collect about 41 of those treasures so I don't think I did too bad there. I would give this game an 8 out of 10, and the only strikes against it would be game length and lack of exploration. I am instantly more excited for Naughty Dogs new game now - the Last of Us. |
