I loved it! Very poignant, thought provoking, and emotional. I love it when a movie can combine historical elements, political intrigue, and also weave in a personal story that takes the edge off the usually sterile nature of a straight historical pic. This movie did all that in spades.
There are other movies of the past decade that hit me harder in the gut and resonate more from a style POV, (TWBB, NCFOM, and more recently Winters Bone and Black Swan) but that doesn't diminish this movies stature and place in history, imo. I simply gravitate to darker material and movies where music and sound design play a more central role.

I give this movie an A.

I too think The Bicycle Thief (I prefer that variation of the title) is the best film listed.

btw sorry about your class's setup. That sucks. We got the campus theater in my class.

...where I saw Seven Samurai for the first time

In all seriousness though, at least smaller classrooms make for better discussion and at least your teacher didn't pick Shakespeare in Love... which I actually like as a movie but have tremendous hate for because it robbed the Best Picture Oscar from Life is Beautiful, SPR, and TTRL. Biggest awards tragedy on record.

I'm jealous of you all! The only film class I took was Indian Image on Film. I wish I had taken this class taught by a husband and wife (both of whom are pretty renowned), in which classic films are viewed at this very old movie theater. I took Heaven, Hell and Judgment with the wife and we got to see Stairway to Heaven (aka A Matter of Life and Death) at that theater. It was a great experience. I also wish I had taken a film class offered by my Malick thesis advisor.

I was lucky enough, however, to have a movie theater in the complex I lived in from the time I was a sophmore thru senior year. I got to watch Days of Heaven, among others, in that theater.

This is why "The Big Lebowski" was our "Official Girlfriend Humor Tester" for me and a close friend of mine. If we watched it with one who didn't laugh, we knew this wasn't the girl for us. And yes, we are both married to women with a wonderful sense of humor (however my wife is definetly the goofier of the 2)!

Still on my "Mulholland Dr." addiction, I've come across a very interesting post by Gus Mahler over at Rotten Tomatoes 'bout the similarities between "E.T." and this most fascinating of movies:

Quote:
1. The initial titles in both films are accompanied by a virtually identical ominous drone that hints at the emotional depths to come (bittersweet in 'E.T.', tragic in 'Mulholland Dr.')
2. Just as an amnesiac Rite looks to a twinkling California Valley for solace, so does the abandoned E.T.
3. Rita "coincidentally" hides in a bungalow where Betty is to stay, just as E.T. hides in Elliot's Mother's shed. The implication is in both films that it was fate. Lonely E.T. and Elliot in need of a friend, sweet Canadian actress Betty and amnesiac Rita in L.A. likewise.
4. E.T./Elliot, and Rita/Betty form a profound bond, the first a pure childhood friendship and the second a carnal one.
5. Elliot (age 11) uncharacteristically kisses a girl in class as E.T. watches a similar kiss on TV at home. Betty displays a shockingly erotic depth in her audition performance after her partner mention "Real close. Like the one with the black hair".
6. Gertie (Elliot's little sister) dresses E.T. up in a blonde wig so as to further identify with him/her, just as Betty puts a blonde wig very similar to her own hair on an upset Rita.
7. In Club Silencio, Betty/Diane begins to realize that this love is but a dream and is coming to an end. Similarly, on Halloween Elliot sheds tears in the forest with E.T. as they set up his communicator realizing that his friend has to leave eventually. The dreams must end.
8. The G-men in 'E.T.' prove to not be the real threat, just as in 'Mulholland Dr.' the shadowy suits and execs aren't the real culprit of Diane's downfall. In both films the threat is self-delusion, dreams, the inability to let go, and the realization that you must.
9. in 1982, the character of Elliot in 'E.T.' is 11. Elliot would be Diane's presumed age (about 30) in 2001 when 'Mulholland Dr.' was released.
10. The meticulously realistic corpse of "Diane Selwyn" has a similar shocking effect as that of a pale and moaning E.T. lying in a creek bed. In 'E.T.', this image punctures the Disney-esque glow of the film with reality just as the corpse in 'Mulholland Dr.' marks the turn into a hellish final act where once bright possibility existed.
11. In both films, the bond between the main characters threaten to destroy both (Diane deteriorates as Camilla strings her along, Elliot is ailing in synch with E.T.) However, where Elliot's and E.T.'s friendship is pure at its core and results in a necessary goodbye for them both, adult carnality and delusion and ambition taints Diane's view of Camilla and she is unwilling to let go, unable to reconcile her dreams with her desperate reality. The child survives his broken heart not yet burdened with obsession, sex, and self delusion. The adult Diane is destroyed by it, helpless not to accept that final limo ride even though she must know where it will lead.
So, while MD is a dark version of "The Wizard of Oz" (http://mulholland-drive.net/studies/oz_reference.htm), "E.T." is a light version of "Mulholland Drive"!

That's all I wanted to add on that. Back to my addiction.

Same thing happened to me. I liked the movie in general, but didn't really laugh that much.

But, I think I'm willing to buy it if it hits BD and give it another go (or 2 or 3 goes). Repeat viewings might help me see the funnier side. That's the way it usually goes with these Coen Bros movies sometimes.

that's how i usually am with the Coens. first viewings usually don't do much for me for their films, but on repeat viewings i've learned to enjoy them more. my scores may not go up a whole bunch, but i like and understand them better (Fargo, NCFOM, BAR (although i loved BAR from the get go), Big Lebowski and others).

usually now i don't even really pay attention on first viewing of their films because i know i'm gonna watch it again later as long as i don't hate it, then i'll see it again at some point.

I’ve watched six movies at my folks’ house this weekend.

Men in Black.”
[Show spoiler]
Still pretty darn fun after all these years. It’s quite a quirky little film with plentiful amounts of action, intriguing special effects, and zany comedy. There are plenty of sight gags, witty lines, and amusing moments to keep it fresh and funny in its own wild way. And centering around the lore of ufology, the movie takes full advantage of poking fun at nerdy alien culture and government conspiracies. A lot of it can be a dry deadpan sort of humor, but it works. And beneath it all is a bit of a dark and morbid undertone, almost like a Tim Burton film (this might actually be a good compliment to “Mars Attacks!”).

The story is pretty decent, with a clever (albeit very unbelievable) premise and with a cast of decent characters. The movie sets up an interesting world of its own, and it is pretty tightly constructed.

The film is well-filmed (maybe a little on the wacky side, but not too much). Acting is pretty good all around. Production value is pretty good, although some sets, props, and costumes may appear a bit fake or dated. Most of the special effects hold up, but not quite all. Music is okay.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Yes.

The Blu-Ray is out of this world. Well, the picture quality has a fair amount of noise with iffy detail and some weak color/contrast. But it does show adequate sharpness, especially with some of the SFX scenes. Sound quality is awesome.

PQ: 3.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

Men in Black II
[Show spoiler]
Continuing in the same vein of the first film, “MIB II” has butt-loads more crazy comedy, bigger special effects, a more ambitious story, more action!

But is that really better. Meh…the story is ridiculous. In itself it feels very shallow and contrived, and is ultimately very short. But what really bothers me is that it is filled with one too many unbelievable moments (like a giant worm skyrocketing out of a sewer…and nobody sees it…uh huh…). One too many twists and turns strains it even further. The only redeeming value is that characters are still adequate. On repeat viewings, I’ve found that the story’s weaknesses can be forgivable, as the comedy and action are still pretty strong, more or less.

The film is still well-made with quality photography, adequate acting, and a high production value. A lot of the SFX are pretty fake-looking, but a lot of them are pretty cool as well.

3/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 2.5/5, film: 3.5/5)

Recommendation: Liked the first film? Rent this, see what you think.

A Blu-Ray for this would be nice. But it looked surprisingly good upscaled.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
[Show spoiler]
What’s the best way to kick off a series of “X-Men” prequels? Start with the best, most badass character! Ah yeah…

“Wolverine” shows incredible promise, as it pits the title character against jeeps, helicopters, mutants, military firepower, and the works! There is definitely no shortage of frenetic action and special effects here!

As far as the story goes, I generally dig it. Berserker characters like Wolverine have always interested me (maybe I’m one myself!!). Like any other story with these kinds of characters, “Wolverine” goes on to show a bit of a heartfelt tale in which the main character tries to reconcile his wicked past, only to have it catch up to him. From then on, the revenge plot emerges. The plot twist toward the end kinda messes this up, but it still works in general. What really messes it up though is all the extra stuff heaped onto it: the useless subplot with Cyclops, for example, or the whole spiel with Gambit. They might be cool, but there’s just too much going on in this story, and it becomes very convoluted. If they trimmed it down and made it just Wolverine vs Victor Creed and Wolverine vs the military, it would probably be more solid.

The film is a bit of a mess too. Photography is generally good, although some action scenes are a bit jittery. Acting is great with a few exceptions. Editing is a mess in my opinion; I think I read that the studio imposed themselves on this film, and it kinda shows. There are just way too many scenes where characters appear out of nowhere (like Gambit suddenly jumping from a rooftop when he was previously knocked out, or Victor Creed suddenly showing up for the final fight), and some scenes really do look like they were spliced in (like the scene where Cyclops is captured in school). On the plus side, production value is generally high (despite a few fake-looking SFX) and music is pretty good.

3/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3/5, film: 2.5/5) Came pretty close to upping it to 3.5 though.

Recommendation: Rent it if interested.

The Blu-Ray is swell. Picture quality looks awesome sometimes, but other times it does look a bit soft and noisy. Noticed a few anomalies here and there, but it is otherwise pretty clean. Color and contrast are okay. Sound quality totally rocked.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 5/5

X-Men.”
[Show spoiler]
Here’s where the big modern superhero craze started (or did it start with “Blade?” I dunno). It’s certainly the first in a while. With the promise of bringing a legendary group of heroes to the big screen, “The X-Men” succeeds in presenting the X-Men universe with a fairly strong amount of action and special effects.

For the most part though, the story takes the center stage. It swiftly moves along, showcasing the premise and setting up each of the characters and plot elements with precision. By the end of the movie, you get to know all about the megalomaniac plot, the fairly-deep characters, and the conflict-ridden world they inhabit. It’s not bad for a superhero film.

The film has great photography. Editing is a little fast, but never erratic. Acting and writing is fine all around. Production value is decent. Music is okay.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Yes.

This Blu-Ray looks slick and sharp, and pretty clean. Some color/contrast can be a little weak, and there is some grain/noise. Sound quality is pretty good.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5

X2: X-Men United.”
[Show spoiler]
A quality sequel can potentially surpass its predecessor. They usually attempt this with overblown action, special effects, a more ambitious plot, etc. “X2” has all of these things, and they are incredibly entertaining. The entire last half-hour at Alkalai Lake is pretty darn incredible in itself, but the rest of the film is loaded with awesome action scenes.

And yet, the story is still quite strong. The characters are about as deep as they were in the first film. The story is a little broader and more in-depth, as it dives deeper into Wolverine’s back-story, the political backdrop of the X-Men world, and the themes of power and superpowers in general.

The film has excellent photography. Acting is still great. Production value is very good. Music is pretty darn good.

5/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

Recommendation: Yes.

This Blu-Ray has excellent picture quality. There might be a little bit of noise/grain, but it is definitely sharper, cleaner, and has better color/contrast than the first film. Sound quality is pretty good.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

X-Men: The Last Stand.”
[Show spoiler]
This third film can be a hit-or-a-miss with most folks. For me, it definitely has enough action to keep it a hit. It is one heck of a cool finale.

The story is perhaps a little hokey with the premise (a cure for mutation), but I felt it worked in general, especially in ramping up the heated issue of mutant civil rights to progress the overall story arc. Characters can be a hit-or-a-miss too, especially since some of them are killed off unnecessarily and some may receive iffy treatment. On the film’s own merits, I find it passable in general. Die-hard “X-Men” fans might be disappointed though.

The film has quality photography. Acting is not bad. Production value is high. Music is okay.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Fan of the first two films? Rent this, see what you think.

This Blu-Ray looks sharp and highly detailed, but with a pretty hefty amount of film grain and noise that can be distracting. Sound quality is great.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 5/5

I'm glad I was right that the picture would make you feel better... and make you want to watch the movie. I'm sure you'll be able to grab some movies from your collection one of these days and then watch Easy A again. I would love to watch it again soon, but I have some other comedies that I haven't watched in a while that'll probably get watched first.

I could be cruel and post more pictures from an Easy A premiere.

Black Narcissus

This movie was a nice little surprise for me. I had never seen it before and blind bought it based on reading the opening description in Pro-B’s review. The aspect that intrigued me the most was the mention of a subtle yet subversive anti-imperialistic sentiment. What I had not expected was the level of sheer beauty in the picture. I must have glossed over the fact that
[Show spoiler]none of this film was shot on location, but rather on a UK set
. Luckily I discovered this fact after watching it, and I was truly in awe at the achievement this film represents (particularly considering its age). The colour palate, at times subdued, can sneak up on you and flood your retina with an orgasm of hues. The effects used are breathtaking, and although they can’t quite approach the realism of today’s best, they do contain a humanity that can’t be duplicated digitally.

The story is very well written. The struggle between a well intentioned (yet inadvertently arrogant) religious mission trying to force itself onto the permanence of the Himalayas and its people yields a satire that is dry and satisfying. This satire is mixed with a genuinely unique bouquet of genres that result in a highly entertaining experience. I should have anticipated the ending sooner than I did given the film's intended message, but I was too busy letting the story take me along for the ride.

I’ve already mentioned the standout elements, but the remainder of the technical aspects are also top notch. The acting, directing, and score are a pleasure to behold. I especially appreciated the fact that I hadn’t seen much of this cast before, and David Farrar was fantastic as a nonchalant antagonist in league with the very nature of northern India.

I am very happy to have it in my collection.

4.5/5

[Show spoiler]

A wonderful fusion of flavours and spices served with a side of warm, soft goodness...just watch out for that post curry kick.

4.5/5

A wonderful fusion of flavours and spices served with a side of warm, soft goodness...just watch out for that post curry kick.
I thought it was a classy and beautiful film.

Coraline - 4.5/5
For some reason I liked it a lot more this time around, not sure, maybe because I noticed a lot more. Definitely need to look into getting the DVD cheap since I gave the one from my combo pack to my niece.
Also saw Corpse Bride 4/5, Confessions of a Shopaholic 3.5/5 and Con Air 4/5 today.

Next greatest rental: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

Nothin’ but an ol’ classy shoot-em-up bank-robbin’ film; a bit like a mix between “Bonnie and Clyde” and a common western. “BCatSK” has its fair share of action and some very witty comedy. But frankly, the movie never thrilled or captivated me enough; I feel it moves a little too slowly, has one too many artistic effects I disagree with (namely the photo-montage scene and the music). I’m sorry to say I find it just a tad dull.

But, it is a fairly decent story with really lovable characters. Can’t help but to get caught up with the fun duo, whether robbing trains or joy-riding on bicycles. I suppose through that method it grabs the audience as they travel to Bolivia and face more trouble. It’s not a bad story overall.

And it’s not a bad film. Photography is solid. Editing effects include some funky sepia scenes and one groovy photo montage, which is stylish (I personally didn’t care for them). Acting is good; I’d probably connect with it better if it was a little livelier, but as it is Robert Redford and Paul Newman keep it real. Production value features some gorgeous locations and quality props, sets, and costumes. I rather disliked the music.

3.5/5 (entertainment: 3/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)
