Of course. We never needed to read any books to understand the story of the original trilogy so why do we need them now for a new trilogy? Absolutely jack was explained between the transition from ROTS to ANH. So why should it be the same from ROTJ to TFA? It's just money making nonsense. Heck most of the stuff that was star wars related has gone to crap. The Force Unleashed would be a fine example of that. And to rub it on everyones faces they named the new Death Star "Starkiller Base" perfectly well knowing that was the name of the main character in The Force Unleashed. It's like taking away your strawberry ice cream then giving you a vanilla ice cream and saying it's name is strawberry. Ridiculous!

Hence the premise of the film, that of the Force having become 'dormant' (in the public consciousness of the galaxy just as much as the lack of Force practitioners themselves) so JJ can play out the whole "wide eyed kid discovering the Force while on the run from the Empire" thing all over again. Cynical retread? Perhaps. But I also see it as JJ wanting to bring back the mystery of the Force, which is no bad thing IMO.

It's funny that people are slating JJ for not showing the galaxy overrun by Jedi in this movie and yet wasn't that one of the key complaints that people had about the prequels? That there were too many Jedi doing too many cool things and it devalued the power and nobility of the Jedi and the Force itself? Now that JJ's reverted it to something where the Force will hopefully be special and unique again - and won't be quantified by a flippin' blood test - people moan that everyone should still be aware of the Force, the Jedi etc.

I checked the barcode, they were grown on Kamino, so much for the organic part. good news is, every grape will taste as good as the previous one you ate, bad news is, when order 66 kicks in, your GI tract will never forgive you!

Also remembered I sold the bulk of my Star Wars books though, years ago. Might've kept some but I think they might be at my Moms house in her garage.
One book I do highly recommend is the Star Wars Trilogy Annotated Screenplays one. Gives details of all the various concepts and notes from the various scripts, including the proposed 9-12 film concept which kept getting whittled down. Great read and especially nice to have if one is interested in screenplays including the changes made in the drafts and ideas.

All-in-all, I'll mention it again I'm really glad they've ditched the old EU and relegated it into Legends so with the Sequel Trilogy they can have their own ideas.
[Show spoiler]But why is Kyle Katarns ship taking off in the background during the Mos Eisley scene in ANH in the 1997/2004/2011 versions? Forget about it.

Maybe playing these video games including watching the sequels including Rogue One will make me a fan again or appreciate the series once more. Just not the same level I used to have until 2006. (Might've already mentioned it in a different Star Wars thread.)
Battlefront won't have a single player campaign, just the possibility to play offline.
The new canon is essentially the CGI cartoons plus the comics put out by Marvel recently, the novels until now are very few.
And it wasn't Kyle Katarn's ship but Dash Rendar's, the Outrider seen in the multimedia project (book, comic and videogame) Shadows of The Empire, one of the few things of the old EU that had Lucas' direct imput.

Starkiller base is a reference to Luke Slywalkers original name... It was Luke Starkiller, even mid way through shooting the original film. The game used it for the same purpose.

Casting it out as non-canon is ridiculous IMO. It was a great game and there should have been a third one.

You won't. The books, toons and games will be, at most, briefly mentioned in a vague and "could be anything" fashion. Hollywood execs know to keep the movies self-contained, and to ignore everything else when a good idea comes along. Even Marvel seem to realize that (so far, anyway).

Yeah there's no way they would make the film feel like you were missing something from not reading a novel or some comics. This film is basically just being treated as a sequel to the original trilogy, almost in a vacuum based on what JJ has said about it. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't anything taken from the prequel trilogy used in it (maybe the other directors will elect to include elements of those in the subsequent episodes).

But yeah, there's a reason they jettisoned the old EU, and a damn good one. Because they know the film has to stand on its own and not get bogged down by other stories only a relatively small percentage of people seeing the film would even be aware of. Episode VII would have been a disaster if they tried to keep it in canon with all of those old stories.

I'm still hoping Hayden shows up as Anakin's ghost, at some point in the new trilogy. It would also be cool if Padme was referenced somehow, like Luke and/or Leia finding an old holo-recording on Coruscant or even Naboo. If done right, they wouldn't even need to shoot anything new for the latter, just use brief shots from deleted scenes or alternate takes. Returning to Kashykk wouldn't be a bad idea either, showing what the planet became under the Empire's control.

That's an excellent point, though I'd like them to reference it some kind of way. I'm personally among those who think Rey might be Luke's daughter, so they could get Shannon McRandle to play Mara Jade in a flashback, and do a "Tron Legacy" on Mark Hamill.
