I own the Criterion DVD and the Criterion Blu-Ray of The Third Man.

I would be one of the 100,000 to purchase a Criterion UHD of The Third Man.

Those are my thoughts.

I won't be the one to attempt an upload of A Safe Place to my brain.

No. There's a lot of films on the Criterion Channel they don't have physical rights to, and only have streaming rights for a limited window of time.

I think an upload of 2001: A Space Odyssey to my brain may be risky too... esp. if my brain starts making me talk in a British accent and say: "I am completely operational, and all my circuits are functioning perfectly."

HAL-9000 didn't speak with a "British" accent.

Hence, the "virus" or hacked version of the movie with someone dubbing in a British accent... get it?

I find The Third Man to be heavily overrated but Criterion would never release it on 4K.

Some time recently, I saw the older film of 3:10 to Yuma. I normally try to avoid seeing multiple adaptations of the same story, but hey I'm also a sucker for a good old-fashioned western. Although old-fashioned might not be a correct word for Delmer Davis' film, it has surprisingly fresh looking visual sense, with depth of field in the cinematography by the justly acclaimed Mr. Charles Lawton.

For those not already aware, Elmore Leonard's source short story is about a man agreeing to escort a wanted bandit to the titular train for 200$ to save his farm, determined to stick to his end of the bargain, even as everyone around him either drops out or drops dead, no thanks to the bandit's posse out to save their boss. I previously saw James Mangold's 2007 adaptation and liked it a great deal, especially for Christian Bale's credible portrayal of the reluctant hero. In contrast I find Glenn Ford's take on the bandit more rounded than Russell Crowe's fun but almost schizophrenic turn. The differences make each of the films worth checking out.

As expected, the A/V presentation is excellent (4K scan, 2K resto), I have no complaints whatsoever. On disc extras are slight but interesting, approx 15 min each interviews with Leonard and Glenn Ford's son Peter. The included booklet has a meaty essay by Kent Jones. I got the UK disc when it was going for 10 quid (~13 USD) so it was a nice bargain.

Yeah, I think both versions of 3:10 to Yuma have a lot going for them. And I'm not even usually a Western fan to begin with. I agree that Bale was tremendous -- to be honest, as he usually is. And yes, Crowe takes it right up to the edge, but I'm not a big Ford fan (though he's been in some movies I really like, I will admit).

I think both are beautifully made and very much worth seeing. You can even be someone like me who doesn't particularly seek out Westerns. Two good movies, based on the same material. They are worth seeing for that alone.

Oh I normally find Bale obnoxious - disliked his turns in the Batman movies and Terminator Salvation, even the otherwise entertaining The Prestige (in which Hugh Jackman was fab). But I thought he was really good here, conveying a rare humility alongwith his character's determination to do right by his family. I find Glenn Ford at his best when he plays characters with a dark edge, like in this one and The Big Heat.

We're not going to get along, are we?

Nah. I'll always be a big, big Bale fan. He's definitely in the handful of my favorite actors right now. Then again, I have 10 movies with him right now, and that's only going to grow. We all have our likes and dislikes, that's for sure. That is what makes it fun.

Maybe you guys can help me with something regarding 3:10 to Yuma. I have never seen the original because I too am not a big Glenn Ford fan (but I did order the Big Heat from the recent Indicator/powerhouse sale, still waiting on shipment) but I did see the remake on tv and liked it except for one part that bugged me (I think I may have gotten in 1/2 way through which probably didn't help) why does Russel Crowe
[Show spoiler]help Christian Bale get him on the train? He is not putting up much of a fight and seems like he is on Bales side against the bad guys when he is a bad guy too and should be fighting Bale all the way through. If I remember correctly, Crowe felt sorry for Bale and admired him, so he went along, which I have always had a problem with.
Thanks for your help....

I haven't seen much of Ford in movies to have a strong opinion either way, but I did like his turn as the "nice guy" role in Jubal (a Criterion release I keep meaning to buy, I love that movie). The only other role (albeit brief) I've seen him in is a weird late-70's sci-fi movie called The Visitors.

What are the odds that the Flash Sale is today?

I mention this only because it was in September at least once. I know that it happened on September 25th, 2012.

harisledon will probably fill you in on the hard data, but everything seems to point to mid-October being more likely.

3:10 to Yuma, The Killers and The Thing are the strongest arguments one can make against the "all remakes are useless" stance. Like somebody else said above, they do wildly different things with the source material that give us two fresh, exciting options.

In the case of Yuma, we get a lean, efficient psychological thriller that's effectively a tense stand-off between two diametrically-opposed characters with the original, and a sprawling, violent action-adventure with the remake. The original is very spare and close-quartered, which emphasizes the conflict between Heflin and Ford, while the remake opens things up and makes use of various locations thus lending to its epic feel and scope.

I'm happy we live in a world with both.
