I did. Was only 16 at the time - please don't do the math - but it was an amazing experience. Back then, there were very few multi-screen theatres, so most were either single or double. This one happened to be at a double screen theatre but it was huge and extremely well suited for the cinematography of The Shining. Particularly memorable were those opening shots, those elevators, the hedge maze and those frightening little girls.

The trailer for this film that is on the blu ray is incredible. I've always loved the score during it. Very eerie.

Same age here missed it by one year! I tried for weeks to find someone of age to take me I was actually real close to sneaking in but it didn't work out

I saw a ton of classic movies in the coming years tho!

Shining is my favorite horror movie I think

I think the only part that disturbed me (or creeped, but not outright scared me) when I first watched it was the scene in the maze at the end, with the sudden reveal. I find it strange that the image has achieved memetic status now.

I really like The Shinning but I don't know if I would say it's the best horror movie. Because I love horror so much I don't think I choose a favourite. It's up there for me though as one of them.

I also was 16 at the time, but, unfortunately, could not get to see it on the big screen.

I was 14 at the time, and my parents wouldn't take me, but my Grandfather did - he knew I loved horror movies.
I had already ready the novel, so the film creeped me out a bit I think the biggest shock for me was when , unlike in the novel .

I tried, I REALLY tried to like the miniseries, but that kid was the most ANNOYING child actor I ever saw in my WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE.

I thought the mini-series was terrific (certainly a far more faithful adaptation of the novel), with my only complaint being the final scene where Danny sees the ghost of Jack, a la Return of the Jedi. Given how closely the rest of the mini-series follows the book, I'm not sure why they changed that final scene.

I have friends who don't like horror because they don't like being scared and they find them too much. I think you are in a minority there.
The point???
How about enjoying a well made film with great atmosphere?

And, age smage, adults can just as easily get scared as kids. It might just take the right film.

I've watched horror films since I was six.
I'm now 55 and I do mainly watch them alone at night with the lights out.

Here's a tip for some of you guys...
Keep telling yourself "it's only a film...it's only a film"

You seem to think that people who enjoy getting emotionally engaged with a film can't tell the difference between reality and fiction then ?

The mini series was more faithful to the plot, but didn't capture the horror of the novel because of the restrictions of network television. It's pretty toothless.

Who said there was one?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, The Shining is my second favorite Kubrick.

1. 2001
2. The Shining
3. The Killing
4. Lolita
5. Eyes Wide Shut
6. Paths of Glory
7. Dr Strangelove
8. Barry Lyndon
9. A Clockwork Orange
10. Killers Kiss
11. Full Metal Jacket

I've never seen Spartacus or Fear and Desire. I blame Kubrick.

This. I'd just add that but for the Movie, the Miniseries might be enjoying greater esteem. It's certainly no Salem's Lot or even It but it's still very above average imo.

The only thing good about the mini-series is Rebecca De Mornay is in it.

Its otherwise dreadful.

It was a joke!
Did you miss the smiley face?

As I already said I'm a bit jealous.

But saying there's no point to watching a horror film if you don't get scared is idiotic.

btw~ I made a mistake...the saying is "It's only a movie"
Perhaps you don't know the history of horror trailers
