Dean Cundey didn't supervised that master, but he was ok with it because he stated that it was the closest to what the movie could've looked like IF they had the money back then to make the movie look more like fall. In other words, a total revisionist of the original photography because obviously the movie was shot in spring and not in fall. Also DVD technology back in 1998 was limited and "primitive" to what came out in 2013. The 35th anniversary and 4k UHD (and even the 25th anniversary and 2008 blu-ray) has a constant color palette (regardless of how different from each other) thorought the film. But the on THX DVD, some night scenes are bluer than others and some daylight scenes with trees in the background look sometimes more greenish, yellowish and then brownish when its supposed to be the same shot .

Nice Halloween III reference. So sad though that it's true.

Arbitrary? Umm, I think it's pretty much implied that they're there because of the break-in from Myers. It's just that the timing is off in the film for these events.

So you're suggesting there was another break-in later, not by Myers, that set the alarm off again? Lol.

3. Loomis’s final gun click at the end is missing on at least some surround mixes.

4. The final music cue (as Loomis looks down to see Michael Has vanished) is awkwardly inserted in the surround mixes. It feels as if the music cue begins suddenly, already in progress. This is hard to explain, but comparing the two tracks will make the difference pretty obvious.

There are other minor differences, but those are the ones that drive me crazy (in addition to what you’ve already pointed out).
There's also added bird chirping sounds during most of the outdoor scenes.

I've gotten into some pretty ridiculous arguments over there in the past - some members over there are downright aggressive and hostile, and some are absolutely clueless as you pointed out. It seems to depend on the thread. Some can be quite helpful, but others are beyond hope.

Okay, so I'm not gonna watch this all the way through yet (waiting on my wife and a friend to do a proper Halloween marathon), but I couldn't resist throwing the disc in and skipping around a bit.

Oh. Em. Jee.

Flummoxed by the seemingly mixed response to the PQ so far. This transfer is GORGEOUS. I mean, wow. The beautiful grain, the sharp detail, the muted colors, the punchy HDR. Wow. Sony-esque stuff, really. I can't imagine this possibly looking any better. I've never even been a fan of this movie, but the beauty of the images was pulling me into the film in a way I never have been before, and now I can't wait to rewatch the whole thing.

To my eyes, this is some stellar work by Lionsgate, and I now have complete confidence in The Evil Dead and First Blood. In fact, this looks so good that I think I'm not gonna wait to pick up American Psycho.

I haven’t seen any “mixed” reaction to the PQ, at least related to detail. Some people simply don’t like the color timing that was opted for. But that doesn’t mean the UHD isn’t strong technically on its own merits.

So it's "What it originally looked like" vs "What we probably wanted it to look like if we had the budget". I'll take what it was probably supposed to look like over what it ended up looking like becasue of the cost. To me the statement reads that they didn't actually want it to look like it did & that the 1999 is what it probably should have been, had they had the $$$.

Either way. It's an opinion. I perfer the THX DVD & consider it to be the "What was supposed to be, but they ran out of $$$" version.

You may prefer it, but it's not the proper way to watch the film.
How do you know what is "intent" though when filmmakers waver back and forth so radically?

And then, do do you mean intent at time of theatrical release or current year intent (see: George Lucas)

Ex:

Thing (Shout) vs Thing (Arrow) both Cundey approved
French Connection 1st bd vs 2nd bd both Friedkin approved
Dracula 1st bd vs 2nd bd both coppola approved
Various Cundey approved halloweens

It is really hard to tell how much is truly intent vs a filmmaker lending their name to a release and getting paid for it so it sells well.

I remember watching the film on TV back in the early 80s and 2 things stuck out to me: I remember when Michael drives by the 3 girls (Speed Kills!), you can clearly see Myer's mask when he stares at them (as he drives by).

Also, during the climax, when Laurie falls over the railing... and she sees Myers at top of the steps... you can clearly see his mask as well.

Never noticed that on any vhs or digital copies.

Yeah, I respect yoir opinion. I'll be lying if I told you that I dont like the THX DVD. Its main problems are that 1. Is not 100% consistent 2. Is not on HD & 3. Is from a very old master and needs some improvements. I think Dean Cundey meant that the 1998 transfer was for the fans and those who over the years complained that the movie didnt looked like it was set on fall. I mean Dean Cundey had the chance to remaster the THX dvd master for the 35th anniversary edition but he instead went to do a transfer that looked closer to the Criterion Laserdisc. So Halloween really was meant to be seen with its flaws and all. And in my opnion that's some of the things that make it special. Just like Jamie Lee Curtis and John Carpenter said, back in 1978 they never thought Halloween was going to be a huge influence comparing to how low budget it was made. Is a product of its time and every time I see the obvious goofs and heavy grain in the UHD transfer, i'm happy because it shows that a movie doesn't really need to be 100% perfect or free of plotholes to make a huge impact on people. I just wish the original mono was included as an option. Lmao

To be honest Shout factory's blu-ray looks completely different from the uk Arrow blu-ray because
1 Its an interpositive, so it show more color grading than the original negative
2. Some Shout Factory's blu-rays are known (well at least in other forums) for been heavily sharpened using strong sharpening tools that sometimes makes it look as if it had edge enhancement and be so compressed. Like the 4k from the original camera negative looks softer because its original photography and Scream factory heavily tried to sharpned the image to create outlines. I cant remember where but I swear that in one scene a small hair on the camera lens in the Arrow transfer becomes a huge black crack in the Shout transfer because of it’s artificial sharpening and edge enhancement.

I took a chance and hit Target Sunday night. The nice kid working electronics had to go in the back, but I walked out with a copy. Can't wait to watch this.
